At last, a chance to dispel rumours that we Brits eat "odd" food
Spotted Dick

Ingredients for Spotted Dick

100g / 4oz Self Raising Flour
A pinch of Salt
75g / 3oz Shredded Suet
75g / 3oz Fresh Breadcrumbs
50g / 2oz Caster Sugar
175g / 6oz Currants
Approx. 5 tbsp Milk

How to make Spotted Dick
  • Place all the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix thoroughly. Make a well in the centre of the mixture then gradually add the milk to form a soft dough.
  • Knead lightly until smooth.

  • Turn onto a floured surface and roll out to an oblong about 22 x 28cm or 9 x 11

  • Bring a large pan of water to the boil.

  • Make a pleat in a large sheet of greaseproof paper or a clean tea towel, to allow for expansion, wrap the pudding loosely, tying each end with string (like an Xmas cracker).
  • Steam or boil for 2 hours.
  • Serve your Spotted Dick hot with custard

Serves 4

I went to England once and you all do eat weird. And what is the deal with no ice? I ordered an iced tea once and the waitress looked at me like I had two heads. I had to ask her to bring me a glass of ice and a cup of tea, When i poured the tea over the ice I thought she would start swearing at me. And beans on toast for breakfast? Strange, just strange.

Well of course we dont do iced tea tyggersmom - we invented hot sweet tea remember........and our climate is too cold to cool it down

Nummie, I think the American version is "super fine sugar" it is between normal granulated sugar and icing sugar (powdered sugar) but I normally use ordinary white sugar....it is cheaper

is that why? I always wondered. We drink iced tea here all year round.

I did very much enjoy my visit there. Even if I did have to chaperone 50 13 year old choir members to get there.

First time I had deep fried icecream was in a Chinese Restaurant.  They rolled the icecream in some sort of coating which tasted very nice and deep fry it..........yummy.

The deep fried Mars Bars, PDU (look at me initialising everyone and they say the Americans do it - hahahahaha).....back to what I was saying.....the deep fried mars bars are a delicasy in Scotland more than in England, they coat them in the same batter that they coat fish in, and just......deep fry them.  I tried one when I was in Scotland and actually liked it........but I wont eat them again because of all the cholesterol.

We Brits call all sorts of things pudding, not sure why, we just do - maybe it is to confuse the rest of the world

Black pudding is disgusting, I have to cook it sometimes for DH and I hate it....

Those white bits are fat, lumps of fat, and the rest of it apart from the skin is pigs blood, so basically it is fried pigs blood - eewwww

Jellied eels are in a sort of runny aspic jelly and are bloody awful, I would not eat them but DH does.....

And with the sweet recipes - I always add more sugar as we have a terrible sweet tooth too in this family

You can be sure the Galloping Gourmet knew exactly what he was saying  he would just have been having fun pretending he was innocent of what he was saying to cause the laughs
