justL sent me this.  See Community Feedback for more information.
I will help in the migration, but suggest you back up what you can.

In addition to the official statement from a Microsoft representative who joined CF to confirm (please see our What's New page for her statement), MSN Groups Contact is also giving confirmation to the impending closure of MSN groups.  The SRX ID numbers vary, but if you contact MSN Groups support via the Feedback  link at the bottom of any groups page, you will get a response like the following:

****************************************************

Thank you for writing to MSN Groups Technical Support. My name is Nadia and I understand that you want to know if it is true that MSN Groups are closing down and moving to Multiply. I realize the importance of addressing this matter.

Kari, it is true that we are planning to close the MSN Groups service on February 21, 2009 and will offer you the opportunity to move your group to our new partner service, Multiply.  We want you to be able to keep your group together, so we partnered with Multiply to create a migration process that moves your group to their service to preserve your online community and its history.

The migration method that Multiply has built for you will be ready next week.  Once the service is ready we will send all of our users an email and will post notices within the MSN Groups site with more information, including instructions for beginning the migration process.  In the meantime you can visit http://Multiply.com to get to know the service and see some of the thousands of groups they host already.

Many users are asking why we are closing MSN Groups.  We want to provide our customers with the most current and user-friendly technology available today and we made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service as part of our overall investment in updating and re-aligning our online services with Windows Live. In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative, best of breed services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about.  It is very important to us that you still have access to your group and its data and that is why we have partnered with Multiply, so you can keep your group going into the future despite the closure of MSN Groups.

Between today and February 21, 2009 nothing will change about the MSN Groups service except that we will remove the option to add more storage to your group. Other features will remain until the service is shut down and you can use it the same way you do today until the date of closure.  Watch the site and your email inbox over the next week as we will post updated information there, including a more detailed outline of your options and next steps.

We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you with the highest quality service available. Thank you for using MSN Groups.

Sincerely,
Nadia
MSN Groups Technical Support

*************************************************

We realize this isn't something we want, but efforts now should be geared towards backing up your present group's content and exploring other options.  Since Windows Live groups have not launched yet and the beta is being guarded like Fort Knox, we don't have much to tell you other than the peek we got last year seems to indicate it's more of a blog-type social networking effort that will be integrated into Live Spaces.

We encourage you to go to multiply.com and take the tour.  See what the site has to offer.  If you have questions, contact them directly for answers.  In the meantime, we're compiling a list of alternatives (please see this:  MSN Groups alternatives request) and would appreciate your input, via email (not on the boards, please) towards that end.  When we have a list composed, we will post it for our members, so you can check out what is available out there.

We will also be starting another thread allowing our members to speak to MSN/Microsoft about what groups mean to them and how the closure will impact them.  It may not make any difference in the grand scheme of things, but may give the powers that be pause for thought.  We ask that you please refrain from bashing Microsoft/MSN or using "salty" language to make your points (if you do, your posts will be removed) and instead, have your say with dignity and intelligence, which will make much more of an impression that an obscenity laced diatribe.

Finally, we'd like to thank our members for their loyalty over the years.  Managing a group this size is not an easy task and requires a huge committment of time and energy.  For the past several months, we're proud to say this has become much easier and all of this is due to our terrific membership.  We hope that everyone will be joining us at our home on the web, www.cfontheweb.com.

oh..heh..i was gonna see if you saw this, sus.

Do NOT create your groups yet if you are going to use the Migration Tool which will move all of your group content from MsN to your new group here. This is IMPORTANT. Because the Migration tool will CREATE your group for you. If you manually create your group first, when you use the Migration tool you cannot reuse your Group User ID to use the migration tool. You will be required to choose a NEW group ID.

apparently you did.

me and 10,000+ other people. but what I did was unknowingly took the name and somehow missed. I accidentally made it a personal site instead of a group. so I deleded and that's when I found out it didn't matter. the name was no good anymore. so I tried moving the apostrophe. NG. so I took another name (added home) knowing by this time that I jumped the gun. all I have to do now is wait for the prompt and it will be set up automatically. I linked my accounts. that's what happens when there's a leak. I'm ready with another simpler URL. I still don't understand what will happen with all the pictures. how could they not expect a leak? it was a foolish move to try to keep this under wraps. meanwhile, I have something you all can experiment with--that's if you don't get addicted to facebook first! in the meantime I'm following following the whole shebang. And Gypsy, you can Delete.

I only have 2 groups listed as my being manager. You have to be listed as Manager.
Apparently MSN is already not on the ball, but it's probably because I used another email addy for those two groups: one is Poets' Radio Forum, which has not been used for ages.  The other group I used for storage and drafts  That, to me, is no great loss either.

But -- I had 4 -- now I have 2.

The Poets' Place ID will be poetsplacegroup (poetsplace was already taken, i screwed up thepoetsplace, but i did, however, set up for your test use: poetsplacehome).

I have another group I was able to migrate:
Poets and Artists Idealiste
that is simply storage for work I do at an art forum.

IT HAS ALREADY migrated!  I used poetsandartistsgroup for the ID.

Here is the sign you will get:
IN GIGANTIC LETTERS!

Poets and Artists Idealiste has moved to a new service, Multiply.

You should have received an email invitation to rejoin the group at Multiply.  If you did not, please click here.

If you've already joined the new group, click here to access it at its new location.

Just wanted to let you know that I have migrated our Poets and Artists Idealiste group over to Multiply.
Click here to accept my invitation to re-join the group on our new site.
If you have any trouble with the link, it is also available on the home page of our old group site on MSN.

By partnering with Multiply, MSN has made it easy for us to keep the group together after MSN Groups closes. I hope to see you over on Multiply.

Oh, Susie, do not rush it.  Take your time.  Some of us do not even know if there may be requirements that need to be met to join or rejoin.  I am feeling your anxiety, and I commiserate.  I have an 'out of order' group and one I use for myself, from which I deleted almost the whole of it.  It seemed easier to delete and start over.

Once you have migrated the group successfully, will we not be able to come in here as it is?  I'm afraid of freezing inbetween, like that old series 'A Step Beyond.'

You are sweating it, and I am panicking.  I love you, Susie!

i really can't do anything right now because it is in the process of migration.
so, i can't change anything.  of course, it looks like a mess.

i suggest people get their ID at multiply & test the previous board i set up.
the link is somewhere in this thread.  look for "home".
the new one, i added "group" instead.

oh brother.

i was able to open up the joining process.
that's okay.
all the editing is in html.
fun reading that, but i can.
i see where once was groups.msn, it's now multiply.
nothing to do but wait.  it'll take hours.  be patient with me, because i have a busy
weekend scheduled and so will have to work at it in between or at night.
it'll get done.
in the meantime, as i said, get your ID and join poetsplacehome at multiply.
at least you'll be able to wander the site and see what's what and practice.
one wonderful thing: you can record your replies or videotape them!  cool.

You are flying!  I will have been here two years next month, and I still have not connected my microphone.  I wonder if I can record and delete until I get it right, or is my 'blooper' going on AS IS. haha

you can delete to your heart's content gypsy.
and once i figure things out, there will be a simple Help Desk.
i will take you through what i've been through.

if you go to my personal site, which i just changed around      again.
you'll see   you'll see.

i won't try to do too much more tonight.
i'm pissed there is so much html in there to remove.
the word artist will be on the calendar now, and i don't know if i can keep Franz.
depends what i can do with the html.
