From Whence She Came

She took to walking backward and refused to think ahead
Her searing eyes were fixed upon this life that she had led.
Those she’d known throughout all time, aligned beside the road
regarded her with hooded eyes, their bodies wan and bowed.

One form, resembling masculine, stepped briefly out of line;
the image blurred, began to fade, a memory benign.
A boy she barely recognized from some erotic night
glanced at her, then looked away, another oversight.

This multitude of castaways reached on to the horizon
Searching rows for permanence, she’s finding, sadly, no one.
For years she wanders, back to front, wondering all the while
How she got to where she’d been, and how to reconcile.

In swarming motes of light she runs, still facing whence she came
While facing back, she stumbles forth, forever to the flame.
