The Muse [1924]

When at night I await the beloved guest,
Life seems to hang by a thread.  "What is youth?"  I
      demand
Of the room.  "What is honor, freedom, the rest,
In the presence of her who holds the flute in her hand?"

But now she is here.  Tossing aside her veil,
She considers me.  "Are you the one who came
To Dante, who dictated the pages of Hell
To him?"  I ask her.  She replies, "I am."

~Anna Akhmatova [1889-1966]

English translation: Lyn Coffin
Recording: Anna Akmatova (in original Russian)

suze
(posted this .wav once before, under a gumilev post - but it disappeared long ago - better to have the poem alongside it and keep the .wav where it can be found).

in fact, when i first found this .wav, it had been labeled incorrectly.

it was entitled: To the Muse (also written by Akhmatova).
i looked all over for that poem, and couldn't find it.

it wasn't until today, when i saw both poems, and listened - that i was able to tell which one it was.  considering i do not know any russian, i thought i did pretty darn good correcting this error.  the other is longer - and could have been an excerpt - but there is no mistaking the ending of this poem.

Susan,

I was delighted to find this here.  Anna has been a favorite of mine for some time. Well, that sounds like it might be eons, when actually I am relatively new to poetry, but it has been long enough for her "collection" to become dogeared.  I keep a list tucked inside of favorites that I wish to return to often.  The list grows with each pass through.

Thank you for posting this.
