Astral Travel
Ancient mythology contains many valuable stories in which the characters are stars or become stars, in the same way that the Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs were supposed to rise in the heavens and shine with Osiris in the constellation of Orion. These ancient legends are often used in ritual, especially by ceremonial magicians who take on the powers of the gods and goddesses. This is done to allow the spirits of the gods and goddesses as teachers, healers, protectors or guides, to enter today’s world and share their power with us. To enable their wisdom to reach us, the most favourable atmosphere has to be set ?an inner temple, similar to their own ancient one, must be created and entered fully. The ceremonial magician must then call upon the gods and goddesses and allow them to overshadow him or herself completely.
Meditate to travel
Imagination and magic have the same root, and all draw on what magicians and witches call the “Astral?or starry realms. You could say this is the world we all enter in dreams. Sometimes it is very real, very familiar and everyday events occur there. At other times, our dreams are wild, bizarre and even otherworldly. Those who walk the paths of witchcraft and magic teach themselves consciously to enter the astral planes and bring back information or power.
Meditation is a key doorway to the inner landscapes, and guided meditation, creative visualization or pathworking all teach the astral traveller how to shift from the outer, mundane level of awareness to the inner, and return safely with full awareness of what has been observed.
Although the process of sitting still, in silence and relaxation, may seem quite simple, many people with busy lives today may find it extremely difficult. It is a skill that cannot be forces but which must be allowed to work gently. Be patient. Meditation can use symbols drawn from anywhere as a focus, as pictures, words or diagrams.
Theatre and Magic
Not everyone is ready to be directly inspired by the energies of a deity, so sometimes the myths are enacted like a play, so that the recorded words, actions and examples set long ago may be studied again and their content decoded for the modern age. Today we view the theatre mainly as drama for entertainment. However, it started in the temples of ancient Greece where it was the stage for religious instructions. There the stories of the gods, their battles and actions were played out by priests before huge audiences in the great temple amphitheatres, with amazing sounds, lights and stage effects. Into the Christian era, priests started by acting out Christ’s passion and the scene with the empty tomb and the angels. Later this was expanded into what became the Mystery Plays, where the whole Bible stories were played out by different Craft Guilds, and later still, it became what it is today.
