Astral Projection:
The Doorway to a New Dimensions

by Jerry Gross
The concept of astral projection has been around for a long time, but until today, it has been hidden from most of humanity. Now, with the aid of astral projection, new levels of knowledge and power enable us to discover the answer to Man's eternal question about life in the physical body. Death takes on a new meaning as we begin to realize that it is only a transition to another dimension, or place of existence. By learning to astral project, we can learn many things about ourselves, and unlearn many things that were previously thought to be true. This leads us to the realization that our physical bodies are only a part of our entire selves, and there is more to our existence than meets the eye!
In our limited awareness, the reality we live and breathe on earth, with its beautiful landscapes, mountains, rivers, streams, animals and insects, can be compared with the petals on a flower. What we see is not the whole flower, but only a part. This is because man has lost touch with the use of his own mind. He concludes, erroneously, that the physical world is the only reality there is. He believes that his life as an individual has only to do with the flesh body of himself, and concludes that the physical world is solid and real because his senses tell him it "feels" solid and real. The mind has abilities that go beyond the five senses of the physical world. The petal of the flower that we now experience is the material world or physical plane of existence. It has a specific vibration, just as all creatures on this level vibrate at the same rate. Because of this, regardless of where we go on this level, all things take on the appearance of being solid, material objects. Just as the colors of the rainbow show the effects of the different vibrations of light, and the melodies on the piano show the effect of the different notes, so, too, does the entire universe contain various octaves, or rates of vibration. These universal harmonics comprise the different levels of existence.
So the earth plane we live on is only one of many dimensions. There are other spheres that we describe as being above or below us. Actually, they are not really above or below us, but rather at all times around us, permeating all things. Astral projection allows us to discover that the people and objects existing on these other realms can be just as solid and real as any object on the earth terrain. And if we happened to be in another level, looking back "down" into this region, we would view an earth that was not solid. Right now, at every instant, we are living, coexisting with, and walking through people and objects of another dimension! When a person astral projects, he or she can see these other frontiers.
When we were born into this physical world, we were provided with a physical body to carry out our duties. Astral projection allows us to project "out of the body" and into the next plane of existence, which is the astral plane. When we do this, we are in another body, which is called the "astral body." We already possess this astral body, just as all other people, animals, creatures and everything on earth possess an astral body.
The astral body has some amazing properties. Unlike the physical body, which is held down by gravity, the astral body can overcome this limitation by the effort of thought alone. While out of the body, we can not only walk around as if in the physical, but also soar above the trees, or go out into space. Another property of the astral body is that it cannot be injured. One of the greatest fears while on earth is pain or injury. While out of the body, this normal human reaction can be unlearned, because there is absolutely nothing that will cause damage to the astral body! In the next dimension, fire, knives, guns, falling from great heights, electrical shocks, disease, wild animals or being run over by a steam roller can do no harm. Many people receive lessons about this in their dreams. Watch for them, because you'll discover that you always survive-don't you?
In this next level of existence, which all of us can visit, there are many familiar things, such as cars, trains, planes, and highways. Everything that is on this earth right now comes from the astral plane. Many people get this backwards. They think the astral dimension was molded from earth. The truth is, the earth was fashioned from the ideas and discoveries which originated on the astral.
When we are out of the body, communication is accomplished by thought. Another word for this is telepathy. In other words, it is not necessary to move our lips in order to be heard, although we can do this if we wish. Sometimes, when we hear what we think is just a thought, this could actually be someone communicating to us from the astral.
This next plane of existence has been sought after, researched, and argued about by philosophers and religious people from time immemorial. Until now, it has remained elusive and has evaded discovery to all but the most diligent. The individual who looks within instead of without, who looks to correct his own imperfections, and who treats others as he wishes to be treated will have the door of discovery swing wide open for him.
When we begin to explore this, we must first overcome the obstacle of fear, which will present itself in many forms. The fear of death, pain, injury, the unknown, evil, devils, Hell and Satan may loom up before us. We must conquer our own fears head on, and they will rapidly disappear.
We are mental creators, and out of the ether of the next dimension, we can create that which we wish around us. If we are convinced a devil is out there to trick or deceive us, and if we have already pictured in our minds what this devil looks like and what he plans on doing, we should really not be surprised when our worst fears are confirmed. The devils we create become real and solid in the next dimension because we created them.
In the astral plane, we can meet those we love, or that which we fear. If we have no fear, we won't meet fear. It's as simple as that. So we can save ourselves trouble by putting nonsense like that out of our mind. Remember there is nothing that can harm us while we are out of our bodies. This teaching of fear has held people in mental bondage long enough! Its exposure is sure to cause a fury in those who have become trapped in the habit of their own thinking. We must release ourselves from the death grip of fear and set ourselves free.
In the astral plane, we can also visit our loved ones who have passed on before us. We can then ask them face-to-face how they like their new surroundings. We can see schools and universities, and may even find ourselves in a classroom, listening to a lecture.
This is also where we can discover the history of the world, and the history of our lives. The "Hall of Records" contains our present lives as well as our past. In it, are recorded our accomplishments and our failures. We can meet our spiritual teachers-which the churches have termed our "guardian angels"-and we can ask them for advice and guidance on our problems.
The astral plane is a vast dimension of existence, and contains life in abundance. It does not operate by the very same laws of the earth plane, and so many things that are quite impossible on earth, are quite commonplace in the astral. Mind over matter is common. Colors are more beautiful, and we may experience endless fascination with new and exciting things that there are to see and discover.
For many centuries, the teachings of certain churches have been that some things are mysteries and are not to be questioned. Eve eating from the tree of knowledge and the subsequent expulsion from the Garden of Eden was sighted as proof. This erroneous interpretation was made by those who were ignorant, or by those who wanted to keep the masses of people in subjugation. Man's redemption in the final analysis will come from his knowledge of himself and his love of his neighbor, not from his ignorance.
The astral plane contains many things that are not on earth at this time. Some of them may appear in the future on earth, and some are from the earth's past. Many different types of animals that have become extinct on earth exist in the astral. Remember, there is no death.
Astral projection enables us to use the part of our mind that has been dormant or sleeping. We can wake up this part and put it to work. It is called the subconscious, and it can be used to give us the knowledge we need to find out more about ourselves, our purpose on earth, and our relationship with God. Most people think of their mind as only that portion they recognize as their conscious mind, or waking mind. It has been said that the mind is ten percent conscious, and ninety percent subconscious. We can learn to expand this ten percent.
Everyone goes to the astral plane at night while they are asleep. Think of this! Astral projection takes place without a person even being aware of it! As strange and hard to believe as this sounds, it is true. To begin exploring astral projection, pay attention to your dreams each night. Eventually, you will come to the realization that you were in the astral plane, but did not realize it.
When we take the first step, of allowing for the possibility of multiple dimensions and astral projection as realities, we can then focus on ways to understand, explore, and actually experience these things. In doing so, we can open the door to an amazing and expansive existence that was heretofore beyond our wildest imagination!

Astral Projection, Out of Body Experiences and Near Death Experiences

What are Astral Projections, OBEs, and NDEs

It's probably helpful to know what each of these titles and acronyms are first.

OBE: Out of body experience {also known as OOBE}
Occurs when the soul body moves out of the physical body into the etheric realm. This occurs randomly during sleep hours to replenish the vitality of the physical body and/or to work through spiritual, karmic, or clarification lessons at a higher level of awareness.
The soul body is always attached to the physical body through a long silver cord attached from the physical solar plexus to the soul body's solar plexus.

Astral Projection: {Astral Projection, Astral Travel, Astral Projected Travel (APT)}
To will the conscious mind into the soul body and then to project ones conscious self out of the physical body into the etheric realm. The length and location of the projection is preplanned and preprogrammed. The projection requires an altered state of awareness such as a deep meditation.
The physical and soul bodies are attached through the solar plexus by a silver cord.

NDE: Near Death Experience
To be declared clinically dead and to return to life remembering the experience of the soul leaving the physical world. Knowing the reason for returning and remembering the encounters both on the physical plane and the spiritual plane.
Watching the soul body move away from the physical body through the attached silver cord. It is reported through channeled information that at the time of death (not NDE) the soul body breaks the silver cord in order to continue it's journey into the spiritual realm.

Now after reading the definitions of each of these can you find the differences between them?

The NDE is an obvious difference, but my reason for adding it is the correlation of the silver cord.

For people who want to Astral Project, understanding how the silver cord functions is necessary. If fear is holding you back from consciously projecting, then this understanding of how the cord works might give you some comfort.

In an OBE you are sub-consciously traveling. Your higher consciousness {your soul mind} is directing the journey during sleep. The soul interacts with other souls to review the agreements they made for interaction in this lifetime. Or your soul will review the days events and compare those to your spiritual blue print to see where you stand on your planned evolution or karmic issues.
These travels typically occur when a person is in a deep sleep called REM {rapid eye movement}. Science has often wondered why people are moving their eyes during the state of deep sleep. We metaphysical folks have always known. As the soul mind travels each night for its review of the day and life plan, there is still a strong connection to the physical body. The REM is a side effect of that connection.

On a physical level the body is replenishing many different chemicals that are required during the waking state. Did you know for instance that only in a REM state your body creates a hormone that is required by your muscles to operate? Your body creates this hormone every night and then uses it up everything day. If you don't reach a REM state where your body can create this hormone, the result is a disease called Fibromynalga. So this state of unconsciousness is required not only for the spiritual aspects, but also for the physical body.

When your work is done, the soul body merges back into the physical. But sometimes that merger isn't smooth. Have you ever gone through a day where you've said "I feel like I'm not here." or "I feel spaced out."? In many cases this "feeling" is the result of an incomplete merging of soul body to the physical body. In essence, you are partially spaced out. You can correct this feeling through a 10 or 15 minute meditation. During the meditation, imagine the two bodies interconnecting and merging back into one whole person.

Have you ever had a dream where you're falling and then your whole body jumps off the bed? Most of the time this phenomena occurs when the soul is doing it's business in the ethers and something here on the physical plane interrupts the journey. Within an instant the soul body rushes back to merge with the physical body resting in sleep. Because of the speed in which this journey back occurs, many people feel as if they are falling. The jump that occurs in the physical is the soul and the body merging back into one being. The merger occurs so quickly and in essence they're slapped back into one being.

Astral Projection, Astral Travel, Astral Projected Travel {APT}
So many different names and acronyms for the same thing can get confusing! That is one of the reasons people get OBEs confused with APTs. The difference is an OBE is directed by the sub-conscious mind, the soul if you will, for purposes of spiritual evolution.
An APT is directed by the conscious mind, for many different reasons, some spiritual, some for fun and some for escape. So when people talk about wanting to have an OBE, tell them they do it every night when they sleep. Then tell them how to accomplish an APT. The first thing to note about an APT is the "intent" must be set before the attempt is made. You program the purpose of your journey, and where you want to go. This will help the conscious mind direct the soul body. It's almost like filing a flight pattern with the tower at an airport.

APTs are accomplished through an altered state of awareness. Typically the best way is through a deep meditation. But there are a lot of things that can hold you back. Fear is the biggest one. If you're afraid you won't come back, then you won't be able to leave in the first place. The only way you won't be able to come back is if you're projecting during a serious illness of some sort and your on the brink of dying in the first place. For the average person however, traveling in the ethers is something you do all the time anyway, and you come back each morning to your physical body. You can also hold yourself back by setting limitations. If you "think" seeing the dark side of the moon is impossible, then for your journey it will be impossible. If you "think" you can go anywhere in an instant, then you will be able to go anywhere in the briefest of instants.

The key to a successful APT is trust. Trust in yourself, in your ability to accomplish this wonderful experience. Trust in the Divine to help you and protect you during the journey. And trust in your guides for helping you make this and each projection an important opportunity for spiritual growth. So have "faith"!

There are many techniques to accomplishing a successful projection. One of the best ways is listening to an audio tape that guides you through the necessary steps. One such tape was created by Shakti Gwain called Astral Projection, and it is a wonderful way to learn. Visualization is the key to just about anything you need to do and that includes spiritual experiences. But some people have difficulty with visualization and they can't hold an image. That's not unusual, it just means that method doesn't work for them. If the visualization technique doesn't work for you, DON'T GIVE UP! Don't be hard on yourself and think you can't do it, because you can. You just have to find the method that works for you. There are a lot of resources on the subject. With the mired of books, videos and tapes out there in the market place you'll probably be able to find one that works for you. Do a little research until you find the method that's right for you and get ready to take flight.!!

Guide to Astral Projection
A Step-by-Step Process

Once you have decided where you want to head out and why, you can use the following suggested steps for learning how to get there. There are a great many books and other resources on the subject of Astral Projection, so if this method doesn't work for you, don't give up. Just broaden your research and look for alternatives.

There are few items and arrangements to be made before you begin your journey.
  • You want to find a place where you are not going to be disturbed for about 1 hour.
    • Typically doing this outside is not a good idea because of the distractions. But if you can find a special place where you know for sure you won't be disturbed by man, animal or machine, then certainly give it a try.
  • You want to find a piece of calm relaxing music.
    • Repetitive NewAge meditation music is the best. You're going to use this to help drown out outside noises. The repetitive nature of the music will help you focus on the visualization process and not on the change in tempo and mood variations that most instrumental music contains. They're fabulous for listening enjoyment, but you don't want to be tapping your foot while you're trying to leave your body. It isn't recommended that you attempt this in bed, before sleep or just lying down. You might be too tempted to fall asleep. If you have a comfortable chair, like a Lazy-Boy or something similar, that might be ideal.
To get started:
  1. Prepare your space as you would for any spiritual development effort. Grab a blanket if you think you might get cold.
  2. Light a candle, say a prayer for protection, ask your guides for assistance and so on. This ritual is part of "setting the intent" for your travel. During your prayer, call in your guides and teachers, the location and why you want to go on this journey. Clearly define the "flight plan" to program both your conscious mind and your soul mind.
  3. Relax in a comfortable position. Try to keep everything at your finger tips so you can fully relax. Start your music and close your eyes.
  4. Take in 3 deep cleansing breaths. Fill your lungs to their fullest capacity and exhale completely.
    • Imagine the white protective light from the Divine filling your body. Know that you are protected, safe and secure from all harm, seen and unseen.
    • As you pull in the Divine light through your nose, imagine a large ball of purple energy collecting in and around your solar plexus.
    • As the light grows within your physical body, imagine your silver cord emerging from the glow. Imagine the cord moving through your body and forming into a replica of you next to the ceiling. Try to form this image as your soul body, the essence of the spiritual you.
    • Once you have that image, turn the visual body over so your soul is looking down at your physical body.

    (Now the hard part.)

  5. When the two bodies are facing each other, one on the floor, the other on the ceiling, try to transfer your conscious mind into the spiritual image. You can imagine what your conscious mind will experience as it travels up the silver cord into the spiritual you. You imagine what the ceiling would feel like against the back of your spiritual body. What ever it takes to actually put you there.
  6. Once you've made a connection, look down at your physical body. Record in your conscious mind what you see. As much of the detail as you can.
  7. When you're ready, move the spiritual body through the ceiling, the roof and out into the ethers. Look back and see your silver cord floating in the breeze, completely intact. Continue through space on the journey you outlined for yourself when setting the intent for this travel experience.
  8. When you're ready to return simply think to yourself, "It's time to go back." Then varoom, you'll be back.
The hardest part is transferring the conscious mind up into the spiritual body. It's going to take time and probably several attempts before you actually make the transfer. Each time you attempt the journey, make note of how your physical body feels and reacts. I don't want to give you any ideas on what you might experience while doing this. I don't want you to have any influence or mental suggestion that might hinder or cloud your attempts. It's better that you try and practice, making notes of your own unique feelings.

For your first couple of journey's you might want to define some easy goals to validate your experience.
For instance, travel to a friend or realitive who doesn't live with you. While there make note of as many details as possible. What he/she was doing, wearing, what was around him/her and so on. After the trip, phoned that person and asked them to validate some things you remembered from your trip. Ask what they were wearing, what he/she was doing and so on.
This process of validating your travel is meant for one purpose. To build your confidence. To show you that you really did take a journey to where you planned to go. As your confidence builds, so does the ease of the projection. As you grow in experience, you can grow in your intent. So if you want to see the dark side of the moon, then go take a look at it. And have some pleasant and wonderful journeys.
