Moon Magick
Many cultures and peoples based both their methods of timekeeping and their religious celebrations on celestial movements. The daily tracking of the sun across the sky, and related solar events form the basis for many beliefs, but the monthly lunar cycle was also used for the same purpose. Lunar-based systems follow what approximates to a 28 day cycle, with 13 moons per year.
The term Sabbat is the one that refers to solar celebrations. The term for rituals done on full moons is an Esbat. Some choose to use this night as a time to honor the Goddess, whereas others use moon magic for either manifestation or cleansing/banishment. The waxing and waning moon shape offers an excellent visualization for either aspect.
To help manifest energies into your life, or to energize a new venture, you want to do your work during the waxing moon, the period of growth leading up to the full moon. This is the time to work for abundance, raising energy, attaining goals, and obtaining. Anything that you wish to grow should be started during this time. The full moon actually covers a three day span so it should be possible for you to arrange ritual time for yourself during the period of fullness. During the time of fullness is when you have the best energy for working on issues of communication, blessing, invoking the Goddess, intuition, divination and judgment.
In doing Goddess work with the Moon, either a threefold or fourfold interpretation can be used. With the threefold, the waxing, fullness and waning are associated with the Maiden, Mother and Crone aspects of the Goddess. With the fourfold association, the moon phases are dark/new, first quarter, full and last quarter, with the Goddess manifest as Maiden, Warrior, Mother and Crone.
If you are doing magickal work around getting rid of energies or working to let go of something in your life, you want to do you work during the waning period. This is a time for working with addictions, breaking bad habits, overcoming fear, releasing illness. Doing physical rituals of throwing things away or actions of cleaning in your home are excellent at this time.
During the period of new moon, there is a three day period with no visible moon, the opposite of the full moon. This time can be used to finish getting rid of energies or for the work of starting new ventures. This “blank?spot can be used for whichever works best for you. Some traditions consider the new moon as a “dark?or “dead moon?and use this period for rejuvenation and rest.
