The Corn Moon In August we celebrate the first harvests of the fall, the harvests of the grain. This energy, which begins at Lammas, is continued throughout the month of the Corn Moon or Barley Moon.
As you might imagine, the energies of this month’s full moon are those of harvesting and gathering, gratitude, and health and vitality. Think about the things you are reaping in your life and what you may need to gather to you for the coming fall and winter months. Think about the spiritual goals you may have set for yourself last month. Are they coming to fruition? Do you need to do something more to be able to reap their benefits?
Celebrate this time of year with the new harvests. Perhaps you might place a bowl of barley or a sheaf of wheat on your altar or prepare cornbread for your cakes and ale. Decorate with sunflowers and marigolds and the colors of the warm sun.
In her book Wheel of the Year, Pauline Campanelli suggests using the energy of this full moon to make onion or garlic braids. The energy of these recently harvested bulbs can protect your home throughout the winter months (and they look great too!)
This full moon is a great time to put some energy into canning your own food for the winter. Tomatoes, which are plentiful at this time, are my favorite. As you work through the canning process, think about the bounty you have and how you will use it to sustain yourself and your family in the months to come. Consider the energy of gratitude that comes with this moon as you work.
Enjoy the fruits of this first harvest moon and may you continue to be blessed!
