The Root Chakra

Location: This chakra is located at the base of spine in the area between our genitals and anus.
Hindi Name: Muladhara, meaning ‘root�?
Color: red.
Planet: Saturn
Element: Earth

Gems: Jasper, tiger’s eye, hematite, smokey quartz, and obsidian.

The root corresponds to our feet, spine, nails, teeth and kidneys and controls the adrenal glands. It’s positive characteristics are that is stimulates the immune system, grants resistance, invigorates the spirit, grants strength, effort, and constancy. Its negative qualities include deep fear, phobias, panic, and a lack of trying to overcome suffering. When it is negative it says: “I won’t be alive and energetic�? The physical dysfunctions that can come from this chakra are nervous problems, tension in the spine, and sexual problems. The archetype associated with this chakra is the Isolator.

Since this chakra is major chakra that is closest to the earth it represents earthly grounding. Fear is felt most strongly in this chakra and it controls our fight or flight response and is our chakra of survival. It has to do with the will to live, vitality, and joy in life. It is through this chakra that we generate and can raise kundalini energy. It also is a storehouse for ki energy. When our kundalini energy rises and joins with shakti energy at the heart chakra and we then allow it to pass through the crown chakra and into the universe it allows for spiritual growth. This awakens our awareness of other levels of energy and our perceptions sharpen. This chakra also has to do with our feelings of being ‘in the right place�?and doing what one is meant to be doing in this life.

Sacral Chakra
Location: Behind the belly button.
Hindi Name: Svadhisthana, meaning ‘one’s own place�?
Color: Orange
Planet: Mars
Element: Water
Metal: Iron
Gems: Topaz, carnelian, jasper, bloodstone, and garnet.
Essential Oils: Sandalwood, jasmine, and rose.
Psychic Ability: Psychic taste.

The parts of the body associated with this chakra are the reproductive system, the pelvic girdle, blood, lymph nodes, bladder, and intestines. The glands that it controls are the gonads. Its positive influences are that it conditions the nervous system, it contributes to the perfect harmony of the body, mind and emotions. It supports the recovery of the inner child, creativity, and wonder. Its negative characteristics lead to a search for experiences of intense pleasure or pain, addiction, capitulation, and inhibited creativity. When it is negative it says: “I won’t need�?or “I won’t connect with you�? Physical dysfunctions caused by it are urogenital problems, arthritis, and edema. The archetypes associated with the sacral chakra are the inner child, mother, abandoner, co-dependent, and the nurturer.

This chakra has to do with our creativity, self-expression, and independence. It also has to do with our ability to stand up for ourselves and protect our inner child. The sacral chakra processes prana (or ki) from the atmosphere and uses it to vitalize the entire system of major and minor chakras. It also balances male and female and releases what we can’t digest.

Solar Chakra
Location: In the solar plexus in the area directly below our ribs.
Hindi Name: Manipurna, meaning ‘jewel city�?
Color: Yellow or gold.
Planet: Sun
Element: Fire
Metal: Tin
Gems: Emerald, black obsidian, tiger’s eye, and amber.
Essential Oils: Cinnamon and geranium.
Psychic Ability: Clairvoyance (psychic sight).

The solar chakra controls the liver, spleen, stomach, gall bladder, and our nervous system. Its gland is the pancreas. Positive attributes from it are that is conveys tenderness, alerts initiative and talents, and develops prudence. It grants us personal and will power as well as an ability to accept ourselves and others. It supports our foundation to trust and our ability to commit. The negative results are that it can result in a necessity to consume large amounts of sugar, it can bring out feelings of jealously as well as an inability to say ‘no�? It can bring about an unreasonable fear of being unloved by others, a fear of reliving pains from childhood, and can lead to ego trips. The negative side of this chakra says: “I hate myself�? Physical dysfunctions associated with this chakra are diabetes, cancer, whooping cough, and indigestion. The archetypes associated with the solar chakra are the hero/heroine, the performer, the hider, the warrior, the defeated warrior, and the victim.

It is in the solar chakra that the physical body connects to the higher levels of being and can be viewed as a kind of internal sun producing endless quantities of energy. This energy originates from our Higher Self and provides the power by which physical life moves forward. Our personal emotions are stored here, as well as our sensitivity. It is the seat of our emotional living and it is from this chakra that our mood swings come from. Someone who is deeply in tune with this chakra will have stronger and more frequent mood shifts. This chakra also houses our feelings of personal power, ego, anger, and hostility. The solar chakra holds the yang energy of our body. It also controls the subconscious and illuminates the mind as well as creating the possibility of choices. It brings us our desires and helps to create our future. It gives us our ‘gut reactions�?or ‘psychic impressions�?and is closely linked with our intuition.

Heart Chakra

The heart chakra controls our heart, circulation of our blood, lungs, and immune system. It correlates to the thymus gland. Positive attributes concerning this chakra are that is fosters intimate contact, the acceptance of all experiences whether they are our own or others, and the ability to have love that is both divine and human. It is responsible for compassion and love without egoism and shows us the consequences of making judgments. When the heart chakra is blocked it can lead to angina as well as circulation and immune problems. The lack of equilibrium in the heart chakra gives the sensation of emptiness and the person can become prejudiced. It can also lead to suicidal tendencies and a personality that ‘gives as good as it gets�? In its negative state it says: “I won’t let anyone in.�?Archetypes associated with this chakra are the betrayer, the perfectionist, the pleaser, the rescuer, and the fatalist.

This chakra has to do with issues of love, self-acceptance, compassion, and balance. It also has to do with our ability to understand issues on an emotional level. It is the center of our caring, harmony, and peace. The Asians claim that this is the house of the soul. It is through this chakra that we fall in love, then that emotion drops to our emotional center in our solar plexus. As the feeling gains depth and becomes sexual it travels down to our sacral chakra and finally to the root chakra. This final move promotes the feeling that we must settle down and commit. Therefore, contrary to popular belief we fall down into love! This is also the place where we Deity can guide us to higher levels of being and love and opening the heart chakra helps us to remove blockages created by fear. When this chakra is in balance it allows us to be more aware of our connection to everything around us and of our ‘oneness�?with others.

Throat Chakra
Location: Within the throat.
Hindi Name: Vishuddha, meaning ‘with purity.�?BR>Color: Blue
Planet: Mercury
Metal: Copper
Gems: Sapphire, turquoise, topaz, and amazonite.
Essential Oils: Myrrh and frankincense.
Psychic Ability: Clairaudience (psychic hearing).

The area of the body that this chakra relates to are the mouth, jaws, ears, and throat; its gland is the thyroid. It allows us to have a unique creative statement and it is the chakra of expression and judgment. This is responsible for acquiring youthfulness and longevity, but if unbalanced it can lead to a destructive search for immortality. In it’s negative aspects it can cause vertigo, anemia, allergies, fatigue, and asthma on the physical level. If it is left unaddressed, the problems can descend into thyroid malfunction, depression, and speech problems. Psychologically it results in confusion, discord, energy leaks, and a tendency to deny one’s emotions. When in a negative form it says: “I won’t seek my truth.�?Its archetypes are the stutterer, the inhibitor, the chatterbox, the liar, and the role-player.

This chakra has mainly to do with mentality, will power, concentration, and communication. It deals with our ability to understand concepts mentally and to communicate that understanding to others. Teachers, orators, and lawyers often have a well-developed throat chakra whether they are aware of it or not. This chakra vitalizes our lungs and our voices and helps us to translate into words the concrete thoughts received from the solar chakra. Aside from doing all of that, it is also the seat of our bodies Yin energy. This is why it works so well with our solar chakra; our bodies are balanced between these two chakras. This chakra is also linked to the mystery of manifestation because our voices represent our intent. We decree a thing and it will be so. Our life experiences come from our thoughts, then speaking these ideas, then translating it into action.

Brow Chakra
Location: In the center of your forehead, where the third eye is.
Hindi Name: Ajna, meaning ‘control center�?
Color: Indigo
Planet: Moon
Metal: Silver
Gems: Ruby, lapis lazuli, amethyst, and azurite.
Essential Oils: Rosemary, basil, and clary sage.
Psychic Ability: This is the center of our psychic powers and can produce psychic effects.

This chakra rules the lower brain, the left eye, and the nose; it’s gland is the pituitary. It allows us to ‘see�?things, to ‘know�?or ‘ken�?things, clairvoyance, telepathy, and to heal through mental projection. Positively it grants ideas of dignity, grandeur, veneration, and delicate feelings awaken, all which lead to clairvoyance. It merges you with either your familial mother or father (depending on your sex) and the universal Deity Mother or Father. When this chakra is unbalanced it leads to a denial of your gifts, to confusion, and memory loss. One can also become illogical, too much of an intellectual. Absent-minded, or fearful for the future. Physical dysfunctions stemming from this chakra are tension, fear, nightmares, and glandular disturbance. Archetypes associated with the brow chakra are the manipulator, the doubter, the liar, and the blind follower.

The awakening of this chakra leads to spiritual evolution and the ability to blend the spiritual and material so that you can be well grounded in your religious pursuits. The brow chakra has to do with the ability to receive information psychically and to access as well as to use the psychic powers of the Higher Self. This chakra relates to our ability to understand spiritual matters and to interact on a spiritual level. It helps us to question the spiritual nature in our lives, thus building our faith or allowing us to adapt and find a religious system that meets our needs. The brow chakra is directly linked to our inner vision, inner dreams, gifts of clairvoyance, and our wisdom and perception are housed here. From this chakra emerges our dreams for our life.

The brow chakra helps us to see all circumstances around us and is our key to directing the energies around us. As you work with the chakra energies in meditation an inner knowing will come from this chakra center in the form of colors, pictures, or feelings. This is the ultimate power center for healing other since it allows us to project our etheric double at will. This allows us to ‘travel�?to the person who needs healing when it is impossible for us to reach them any other way.

Crown Chakra
Location: Just above the top of your head.
Hindi Name: Sahasrara, meaning “thousand petaled lotus�?
Color: Violet
Planet: Jupiter
Metal: Mercury
Gems: Diamond and quartz.
Essential Oil: Rosewood, lavender, and sandalwood
Psychic Ability: Astral projection and enlightenment.

The crown chakra controls the higher brain and the right eye in the body as well as the pineal gland. Here masculine and feminine are joined and we find our reunion with all. It allows us to connect directly with our Higher Self and it balances our interior and exterior to work as a harmonious whole. When this chakra is out of balance it disrupts the entire chakra system, slowing the spin rate and creating blockages. When this happens our faith is tested and we often feel purposeless or that we are missing out on abundance. In this state it says: “I won’t exist.�?If left unchecked a person can descend into senility. The archetype associated with the crown chakra is the mystic.

This chakra has to do with our connection to Spirit and our oneness with Deity. It is here that the power of prayer becomes reinforced by our Higher Self, giving our spells that extra ‘oomph�?that is sometimes needed. This chakra never awakens spontaneously; we must go through conscious spiritual work before we can access the crown. This is because our bodies, minds, and spirits must be comfortable with the idea of facing Deity (not just dealing with it in the abstract) before we can open the crown chakra. The system works to protect us from accidentally opening ourselves to energies and forces we are unable to handle. Since this chakra spins at such a high intensity and covers part of the head, it often creates a golden sheen in the aura. When this chakra functions at it’s peak we begin to understand for the first time that creation has no limits and is the same as potentiality. It is from this chakra that we get ideas for transmutation and how to implement it.

As it was explained before all the chakras work together in this system as a whole, however some chakras work in pairs to help manifest certain qualities. The sacral and throat chakras work together and belong to creation. The solar plexus and brow are related to vision and intelligence. Each chakra will express the same function in a lower frequency. When you want to manifest a certain quality work with the chakra, or chakras, that correlate to the function. Through them you will be able to learn to bring that quality into your life or evoke it from within.

Like everything, the chakras have both positive and negative attributes, and positive and negative spiritual qualities. These are always present within each of us even though they may not always be manifest, and they can never be destroyed. When the kundalini is raised and the chakras awakened these qualities start manifesting spontaneously in our lives. This doesn’t mean that we get only the good or positive aspects, we get all of it! The chakras are explained separately but they function as a whole and in that wholeness, we find equilibrium.

Diseases are related to the inability to absorb, transmute, or integrate certain energetic frequencies. When energy enters a blocked chakra it will first express itself through a psychological dysfunction, if this doesn’t alert you to the problem eventually the symptoms will become physical. If ignored for too long the physical symptoms can become quite severe, in some cases it has lead to heart attacks and cancer.
