Intro To Beadwork Tools and Equipment: Wirework Tools
1} Wire Jigs
Wire jigs are useful for bending wire into shapes. The basic design of a jig resembles a peg board with a bunch of either staionary or removable pegs to wrap wire around. The best jig to get is a transparent one with metal pegs. Your choice of jig size will want to match the gauge of wire you plan to use.
2} Files
Get a set of jeweler's needle files to get rid of snags and burrs at the wire ends. The most useful type of file has a flat edge and pointed tip.
3} Steel Wool
Fine grade steel wool is used to polish and smooth the finished surface of metal. It is used after all snags and burrs have been removed. But use before you use a polishing cloth to buff the surface to shine.
4} Chasing Hammer
Metal hammers are used for flattening objects and making decorative designs. The wide, flat end is used for flattening wire and striking chasing tools, while the round end is for riveting and for making decorative designs on metals.
5} Rubber or Plastic Mallet
Mallets are used for striking the wire without making a dent. This is useful to use when hardening or straightening wire or setting a shape.
6} Polishing Cloth
Polishing cloths are used to remove tarnish and restore luster in metals. Polishing with the cloth is the final process involved in working with silver or other metal wires.
7} Mandrel
Mandrels are used to make a series of consistent round shapes in wire. Pencils, dowels, kitting needles, and bamboo skewers all make good mandrels.
