IDAHO METH PROJECT
AUGUST 2008
IMP Web Site Adds New Merchandise Section

meth mug  meth t-shirt  meth water bottle

Throughout the past several months, the Idaho Meth Project has been inundated by requests for t-shirts and other items that feature the "Not Even Once" logo.  We are so proud that people are willing to showcase their support for the Idaho Meth Project and, in response, we have launched a new section of our Web site where t-shirts, water bottles, and coffee mugs are available for purchase.  Special thanks to Carpenter Screen Printing (Caldwell) and Litehouse Custom Printing (Sandpoint) for their support in helping us produce these materials at a low cost.  As a result, a majority of the proceeds from any merchandise purchases will go toward sustaining the Idaho Meth Project throughout the state.  To view new merchandise, please visit: http://www.idahomethproject.org/merchandise.php
Idaho Meth Project - The Next Six Months

The Idaho Meth Project is an ongoing and sustained effort that is designed to reduce the prevalence of first-time Meth use in our state.   The campaign launched on January 7, 2008, and since that time we have been working diligently to educate young people throughout Idaho about the dangers of methamphetamine.

Recently, we have achieved several major successes that will enable us to further our reach throughout Idaho.  A recent trip to Spokane to meet with the four Spokane television stations (which broadcast throughout North Idaho) resulted in tremendous support from the Spokane media.   In the near future, residents of North Idaho will start seeing the ads on teen-focused programming on all four broadcast networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX), in addition to the ads having a presence on cable television, radio, print, billboards and high school newspapers.

We are also pleased to report that starting August 18th, the Idaho Meth Project will be traveling throughout the state along with our creative partners  -- Venables Bell - to interview nearly 70 teens and young adults that have experienced an addiction to Meth.  The material from these interviews will then be used to produce a series of new radio ads that feature the stories of real Idaho youth.  One of the goals of these interviews is to also produce several new Spanish language radio ads that will be aired on Spanish radio stations.

Following is a brief summary of a few of the other major initiatives that the Idaho Meth Project will be undertaking between now and the end of 2008:
  • August 2008 - Begin production of new radio ads
  • Fall 2008 - School outreach activities
  • October 2008 - Launch Year 1 Meth Use & Attitudes Survey to measure the impact of the campaign
  • October 2008 - Major fundraising and community event in Idaho Falls
  • January 2009 - Launch Wave II creative
Idaho Meth Project Volunteers Spread the "Not Even Once" Message at Summer Events

IMP Summer Booth

Throughout the summer, the Idaho Meth Project's team of over 400 volunteers has been making a difference through our grass-roots community outreach activities.

District Six volunteers recently made an impact at the Life Run in Pocatello. The event had approximately 266 participants including adults, teens, and children. Two adventurous IMP volunteers participated in the race while wearing their IMP volunteer t-shirts.  Life Run attendees who visited the IMP booth commented on their support for the Idaho Meth Project, the  effectiveness of the ads, and expressed interest in getting involved, while kids wore "Not Even Once" temporary tattoos with pride.

In addition, District One volunteers participated in the Kids Day in the Park event in Coeur d'Alene. The Idaho Meth Project booth was highly attended as volunteers offered free face painting for the kids. Fun was had by all while IMP volunteers worked to educate parents and kids about the dangers of methamphetamine.  The volunteers in District One also participated in the  Coeur d'Alene Street Fair, along with Spirit Lake's Drug-Free Community Day.

Way to go IMP volunteers -- you are making a significant impact in everything you do!

Real Stories

Age: 18
Gender: Male
Location: Garden City

I first started using meth when I was 15 years old. My older brother was a frequent user and he got me high for my first time. Within a year I was shooting up as often as I could, or whenever my brother had some. Last year my brother was killed by an angry drug dealer, because he did not have enough money. The dealer knew who I was and came after me. I went to the cops and was arrested for possession, but the dealer got charged with murder. I've been clean for almost 6 months, but it still drives me. It's a hell of a substance.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Magdalena Soto

Magdalena

Magdalena Soto from Meridian, Idaho, is our star volunteer for the month of September.  In addition to being a former teacher and a current drug and alcohol counselor, Magdalena is a native Spanish speaker who has been extremely helpful in extending the Idaho Meth Project's reach into the Hispanic community.

Magdalena willingly offered her services to translate a number of the IMP's materials into Spanish.  In addition, last month Magdalena took time away from her business and donated several days of her time to travel with the IMP staff and our creative team, Venables Bell, to several different locations in Idaho to interview young Spanish speakers about their addiction to Meth.  These interviews will ultimately be used to produce a series of new Spanish language radio ads that will air on Spanish radio stations in Idaho.  Magdalena stepped up in a big way when we needed her expertise-and we can't thank her enough for all of her support and positive energy!

I never believed how fast the world of meth could suck you in. It took one night for me about three years ago. My husband, however, was on it for at least 13 years, and I just wanted to see what the big deal was since then we had moved across country we lost everything in that move. The person driving our truck with everything in it was coming down off meth and fell asleep at the wheel, he went off the road and into a river in MT. We came back to Boise a few months later and it all started again after awhile we found out our babysitter who was my best friend was sexually abusing my six year old daughter and a few other kids around the complex.  After that and all the court stuff we got into it even worse because now we gave our self an excuse we became homeless.  Family members blamed us for what happened and won't talk to us even now. We have been clean for about a year now, but with the lasting effects of meth it's still a fight to move on but we are fighting every day. Thank you

Planning for Year End Charitable Contributions? Remember the Idaho Meth Project

As fall approaches, many families and corporations will begin adopting budgets for the next fiscal year and will also consider charitable contributions prior to the end of the tax year.  As you and the organizations that you are involved with go through this process in the coming months, please remember the Idaho Meth Project.

The Idaho Meth Project is a 501(c)(3) organization, contributions to which are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.  The project is entirely funded through the generous contributions of individuals, corporations, foundations, tribal governments, and a variety of grants - we are not a government program

While contributions have been generous through the first part of 2008, we need to raise approximately$2.4 million on an annual basis in order to sustain the project's prevention and public awareness efforts on a statewide basis.

Donations are accepted online at www.idahomethproject.org/Take_Action/index.php or contact IMP Fund Development Manager Mandy Macomb at (208) 631-8367 or [email protected]

IDAHO METH PROJECT
OCTOBER 2008
Successful Event Spreads "Not Even Once" Message to the Hispanic Community

hispanic community girls

Amidst a fiesta-like atmosphere that included dancers from the Ballet Folklorico and several Spanish-language bands, nearly 4,000 members of the Hispanic community participated in a Meth education and public awareness event sponsored by the Idaho Meth Project and Bustos Media.

Multi-generational families spent the entire afternoon at Lakeview Park in Nampa enjoying entertainment and Mexican food vendors, while at the same time thoughtfully listening to the Spanish language anti-Meth messages interspersed throughout the event.  Over a dozen volunteers from the Idaho Meth Project talked with kids and parents about the risks of Meth use, and several Spanish-speaking volunteers shared their personal stories of Meth use.

While Meth use is certainly not a Hispanic only problem, the Hispanic community is definitely impacted by the scourge of Meth in Idaho and this event was a wonderful way to ensure the Hispanic community in the Treasure Valley was exposed to information on how to talk with their teens and young adults about the dangers of Meth use.

Special thanks to Clinton Fitch from Bustos Media for all of his support in organizing this event!

I started using meth at the age 13. I never got to experience a childhood-I was 4 years old and I was a mom to my 2 year old sisters. I had to do what I could to get by. My parents were never home. They were out getting high and when they were home they were sleeping. I was taken away from my parents and I had to live with my grandma. My dad went to prison I just was going through a lot I started doing it-I loved the high. I loved doing it and it was my life. I loved crystal meth. I slept around for it, I would steal for it I would do anything for it. I was addicted to it for 9 months doing it every day. it really didn't change who I was until about 2 months after I started doing it and it was like if I couldn't have it when I woke up or when I wanted it I would start freaking out on my mom and whoever was around me. It took over my life. I went and got help when I knew that it was either life or death. I was so addicted I would burn myself for fun and I would pick at my skin until it was raw-I never ate. I weighed 65 pounds it is so horrible. Today I am clean and sober for almost 2 years and I still have a problem thinking about doing it and tasting it. I always can taste it and it is horrible I hate it. It tears your family apart makes you a totally different person so if you can, go get help please do before it is too late.

IDAHO METH PROJECT
NOVEMBER 2008
Idaho Meth Project Volunteer Program Reaches 600 Participants
Program Contributes More Than 5,500 Hours of Service and Delivers 300 Community Presentations

Methe Project Volunteers

Less than a year after the launch of the Idaho Meth Project, the organization's volunteer program has surpassed its 600th participant, logging in more than 5,500 hours of service to combat Meth abuse throughout the state, including:
  • More than 300 presentations to local schools, service organizations, and community groups educating people about the prevalence and dangers of Meth use in Idaho;
  • Eighteen creative fundraising events-including music festivals and fashion shows-organized by local volunteers ensure the sustainability of the Idaho Meth Project;
  • More than 20 adults and teens providing administrative and research support in the Idaho Meth Project office.

"When we first opened our doors, we knew we were taking on a huge problem. Meth addiction tears communities apart, but Idahoans are ready to take their towns and cities back," said Megan Ronk, executive director of the Idaho Meth Project. "Every single day I'm encouraged and thrilled to see people from every corner of the state joining together in the fight against Meth. We are incredibly grateful for the energy and commitment of all our volunteers who have embraced this important work. They keep us going."

The incredible growth of the volunteer program in Idaho has allowed the Idaho Meth Project to reach all regions of the state, allowing volunteers to do things like share personal stories about the effects of Meth, and host education meetings about Meth use and addiction.

"We are part of the movement against Meth here in Idaho," said Cyn Reneau, District 4 (Treasure Valley) volunteer chair. "Our volunteers know that they are making a difference in their communities and, as our numbers grow, across the entire state. When we talk with our friends and neighbors about Meth, we're putting prevention into action. We're helping to reduce first-time Meth use, and reversing the devastating drug trend in our state."

Additional help is always welcome at the Idaho Meth Project.  Particular areas of need include District 2 (Latah, Clearwater, Nez Perce, Lewis, and Idaho counties); District 3 (Adams, Washington, Gem, Payette, Canyon and Owyhee counties); and District 6 (Butte, Bingham, Power, Oneida, Bannock, Franklin, Caribou, and Bear Lake counties).

If you are interested in volunteering or for more information, please contact the Idaho Meth Project at 1-888-331-2060, or visit the Idaho Meth Project Web site at www.idahomethproject.org.

Idaho Meth Project Participates in First Annual National Summit on Methamphetamine

On November 16-19, 2008, representatives from the Idaho Meth Project including Board of Directors President Debbie Field and Executive Director Megan Ronk, were honored to participate in the first ever national summit on methamphetamine.

The goals of "Methamphetamine: The National Summit to Promote Public Health, Partnerships, and Safety for Critically Affected Populations" were as follows:
  • Promote the development of national strategies that participants can use to strengthen and expand existing efforts back home;
  • Forge collaborations across federal, state, local and tribal government agencies and with community partners, and establish a mechanism for the creation of collaborative plans with all federal agencies;
  • Identify culturally appropriate and relevant products that reflect promising areas of research and evidence-based practices in prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery management in order to assist communities in their response to Meth.

The 13-member team from Idaho joined action teams from 19 other states to share best practices and lessons learned.  We hope this conference served as an opportunity to urge our federal partners to enhance funding opportunities for Meth prevention program like the Idaho Meth Project.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Miguel Mouw

Miguel

This month the Idaho Meth Project would like to recognize Miguel Mouw as volunteer of the month.  Since starting as a volunteer this spring, Miguel has worked at numerous booths and spent considerable time during days, evenings, and weekends sharing his story with Idahoans.  Miguel's passion is to educate others about the dangers of methamphetamine.

Most recently, Miguel traveled to Emmett to join gold medalist Kristin Armstrong in a joint presentation to the schools in Emmett. The kids and teachers had a great connection as a result of the personal experiences Miguel shared so openly.

Miguel is an amazing speaker with a heart for others. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work with him. Thank you, Miguel, for your hard work and dedication to the Idaho Meth Project and the "Not Even Once" message!

My mother started using meth when I was 14. My father and I found out when I was 16.  My father made so many attempts to stop her, they only ended in failure.  She would stay out all night, come home not being herself.  We'd always end up being broke every month, and have no food.  She's gone into rages with my dad, even attempted to shoot him.  She's called me every name in the book and has screamed all dirty words you can think of to me.  My dad eventually moved me out and left her.  She is a full addict now, using it every day.  She's lost all her friends from stealing and she's turned her back on me.  She has needle marks on her arms now & looks 20 years older than she is.  I wish she could be normal again, but that's an impossible dream.  I miss her.

 The Idaho Meth Project raised over $140,000 at its first Givin' Meth the Boot event held October 27 in Idaho Falls.  Lady Antebellum, recently voted as Best New Artist of the Year at the 2008 Country Music Awards, performed for a sold-out crowd of nearly 1,000 attendees at the Colonial Theater.  All the funds raised will help further the groundbreaking work of the Idaho Meth Project.

Countless citizens and corporations in Eastern Idaho contributed their time and financial support to organize this event, including Kathy Simpson, wife of U.S. Congressman Mike Simpson; Mountain View Hospital, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Melaleuca, Pacific Steel & Recycling, J.R. Simplot Corporation, Premier Technology, Monsanto, CH2M-WG Idaho, Bank of Idaho, The Hartwell Corporation, Idaho National Laboratory, Nobis Travel and the City of Idaho Falls.  Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter and First Lady Lori Otter also participated in the event to show their support for the project.

"Givin' Meth the Boot was one of the Idaho Meth Project's most successful efforts since the project launched in January 2008, and we couldn't have done it without each and every one our sponsors and supporters in Eastern Idaho," said Megan Ronk, executive director of the Idaho Meth Project.  "We are incredibly grateful for the community's generosity and support to help in the fight against Meth in Idaho."

Based upon the overwhelming success of the event, the Idaho Meth Project plans on organizing the second annual Givin' Meth the Boot in Idaho Falls in the fall of 2009.
