Paula got sober in 1985 and spent every moment of her time since that August 12th working a program and helping others. She was an instrumental part of my sobriety as well as many others who knew and loved her, as evidenced by the over 200 people that attended her memorial service. Most of whom were people she touched along her road of recovery.
Paula had a passion for working with others and received several Human Services certificates in college. She was a drug and alcohol counselor for a period of time until she found that she really had a passion for working with seniors. Her compassion and ability to listen made her a great friend and an excellent counselor.
There are no words that can accurately express how much Paula will be missed and what she meant to those she knew and loved. She touched so many people in so many ways, and all our lives are changed as a result of her presence.
She was always a free spirit and now her spirit is free. Wriiten by Rebecca Lutz
| AAC Beach Bonfire Atlantic Alano Club’s annual beach party was its usual fun-filled sober get–together. First to arrive and set up the umbrellas and volleyball net were AAC Board Members Todd M. and Michael T.; John P., Hector, an Attitude Adjustment regular, and Dennis B., gathered from another AA group. Hector toted new grass-covered beach umbrellas (donated by Choices), and was overheard commenting, “I enjoy having a pick-up because I like to help people move.?Indeed, service abounded. Todd M., Ad Hoc Activities Director, planned and organized the whole event; Joey B. made multiple runs to and fro, mostly shuttling Choices residents; John P. made multiple lengthy treks to his far away parked car to replenish beverage supplies; Sean Z. purchased twenty tickets so that Choices residents could attend.
Todd and John observed what has become a post Sunday Attitude Adjustment meeting feature, the after-meeting beach run. A handful of other folk enjoyed the wetlands and its feathered fowl. The partiers played two spirited volley ball games and a couple of pick-up games. Many plunged into the waves, swimming, body surfing, boogie boarding, and ogling the surrounding tanned lovelies. Plentiful sunscreen was exceeded only by its many willing applicators. Approximately forty people attended throughout the day.
The dinner line was long at times; however, all attending partook, and none of the food went to waste. The bonfire was ignited as the sun set at 7:50 p.m, prompting the inevitable s’mores and the fireside AA meeting in the sand.
It was a small, but spiritually strong, meeting around the fire with all sharing, the warmth of the flames matching the warmth of the fellowship gathered there.
Upcoming Events
Uno This Sunday, August 17, finds us trekking to the Sawdust Festival, an arts and crafts exhibition/fair in Laguna Beach. A sign-up sheet for rides or carpools is posted on the pink supplies door at the Club. Tickets are $7.00, and the caravan leaves at 9:00 a.m. Join us for sun, fun, art, lunch, and, Oh yeah, sober camaraderie.
Dos We are aiming for an annual rummage/yard sale towards the last weekend in September, so hang on to your junk/other man’s treasures to donate. Almost anything is welcome, but, when it comes to clothing, send only the most extra cherce duds, as they can pile up and lie there, not selling. This event is usually a rousing, fundraising event. Volunteers to work the event are also needed. Exact date and venue TBA.

<META content="Microsoft SafeHTML" name=Generator> Atlantic Alano Club Newsletter No. 10 Nov., 2008 November Greetings Dear Atlantic Alano Club Fellowship! Nov. Birthdays Dino 11/27/06 (2 yrs) Theresa F. 11/7/05 (3 yrs) Jay H. 11/1/02 (6 yrs) Kimberli A. 11/18/89 (19 yrs) Matthew L. 11/21/02 (6 yrs) Cheronne S. 11/3/00 (8 yrs) Karen W. 11/14/03 (5 yrs) Sean D. 11/6/07 (1 yr) Michael S. 11/1/91 (17 yrs) Thanksgiving Dinner This year’s annual free Thanksgiving dinner seeks to bring together members and non-members, potential members, as well as the recovery community, the Long Beach community, the of-service community, and the GLBT (and friends) community for the purpose of fellowship and promotion of AAC in a familiar and welcoming setting.
The overriding objective of this event is to:
-
Generate good feelings within individuals -
Provide visibility to the identity of the Atlantic Alano Club -
Generate positive word of mouth about the Club
Plans to gay up and AAC up, re AAC’s Board Chairman, our annual Thanksgiving dinner and potluck fly furiously ahead. A decorating committee is formed and active; turkey and trimmings are being ordered and/or supplied by members, complete with charted timetable. Dinner will be served from 3:00 to 5:00.
Service needs for that day include helpers to arrive at 2:00 to help set up tables, place settings, and buffet.
| Halloween Dance and Party Approximately fifty-five revelers enjoyed this year’s Hallo-ween party while dancing tothe sounds of DJ Youngzilla, partaking of the comple-mentary buffet and copious Halloween treats, and receiving door prizes, a 50/50 raffle prize, and costume awards. Praise abounded for the beautifully decorated hall and for the buffet. Once again, AAC service volunteers came through and donated hours, goods and supplies, and, of course, their generous spirits to make the event a welcoming ambience and fun party. Honestly (rigorously) though, we learned that, next year, we need to start the door prizes and awards a little earlier in the evening, as it was observed that, now that we party without substances, we tend to wind down earlier. Funny thing there.
Home for the Holidays We are holiday brightening up the Club digs in every way we are able. Yes we can put lipstick on this boar. Starting with painting the ceiling tiles on Sunday, November 23rd (see signups for the painting party posted in the meeting room), we next seek your input for a color palate contest. We will be painting the entire insides of the Club and replacing the floor, and possibly the window blinds. We also seek to expand into other rooms at the site, pending a meeting with the building manager, scheduled imminently. Stay tuned as designing/expansion dreams become reality, and stay tuned also for opportunities requiring your service-minded assistance. And, be excited!
Christmas Breakfast Our annual Christmas breakfast plans are also in place, and will take place at 8:00 a.m. right after the Attitude Adjustment meeting. We’ll need volunteers to flip flapjacks and hungry folk to join us for the ‘most important meat of the day.?
New Years Eve We will round out the year’s fellowship events with our New Year’s Eve Dance and Party, after which we embark on next year’s flurry of more of the same. Further information will be available as these last two happenings loom closer.
