The dialogue continues with Seattle's Strength over Speed!  After a brief talk this morning we should have more ideas coming our way after October 15th.  Do we have anyone in Seattle or Washington?

>Hello Tony,
>

>
>So glad to get such a quick response from you.  The "Meth Project" is a subdirectory and forum
within a gltbq sobriety oriented and human core development community.  So, without getting too
carried away with the logistics, it is a special forum within an entire site dealing with addictions,
substance abuse, and various issues that affect us.  In addition, the site deals with the very
foundation of human core challenges that affect the gltbq community.  As you will notice there are
forums concerning Oppression, HIV HEALTH, political processes, and many other outlets used as tools
to educate, share, and gather support.
>

>
>The "Meth Project" is the latest and the biggest undertaking by its design.  We are committed to
compiling "integrated" resources and assisting people from every demographic.  Our primary concern is
the part of our community lost in backwoods of rural america who may get lost in the shuffle
of "generalized" rehab.  In my experience, if the individual isn't given the right options for their
individual recovery, they end up going back out and we lose that recovery.
>

>
>So, we are reaching out to other organizations that cater to the special needs of our community and
we are looking for representatives from each state as a point of contact so that we can build the
appropriate resources for their state.  I say "appropriate" because no one has more knowledge of
local resources that are worthwhile, other than somone with the first hand experience located in the
state that they represent.
>

>
>I started the project by reaching out to rural America and learned through trial and error that it
was probably better to connect with urban organizations and expound further on reaching out to
the "rural" communities.
>

>
>We will be establishing a foundation.  Of what type is being discussed and will meet with my
accountant here shortly.  A .com domain has been purchased, separated from the MSN subdirectory which
limits us from doing many things.
>

>
>At present, if I can continue to build the project located on the platform that we have while the
new site and foundation is built and established this would allow room for pragmatism in building,
growing, and finding out what works and what logistical paths we should consider.
>

>
>Anyhow, I have expounded on what our purpose is with a little explanation on what we as an
organization are about.  What we are looking for at the moment is somone who will work with us to
develop your state and hopefully bring other good minds into the swing of our organization.
>

>
>If there is anything that I can offer your organization other than more exposure, I would be most
interested.  This is definately a process of networking appropriately, and increasing communication
so that everyone benefits, most importantly the one seeking healthy choices, and those seeking
healthy communities.
>

>
>Methamphetamine is an epidemic that seems to be to some degree somewhat accepted and tolerated
within the sexual minority community.  I don't know why this is but we want to become involved that
it does not consume the community that we have.  Apathy is destructive.  As a recovering addict
myself, I've witnessed this community apathy first hand.
>

>
>A bit long winded but your last line told me that you are quite interested in what we are trying to
pursue.  There are no big ego's here.  First and foremost, I started the community to offer
an "integrated" approach to recovery.  My first rehab that I entered into when I was in active
addiction not only tried to shove the bible down my throat, they tried to convert me to being
straight.  It was a humiliating experience and I vowed then that someday I would stand against
the "one way or the highway" approach to recovery.  We have lost numerous addicts to this type of cut
and dried concept.
>

>
>I've taken enough of your time Tony.  I look forward to hearing more from you.  Please, if you are
so inclined and have the time check out the entirety of our site,
http://groups.msn.com/backtothebasicsplease.  The new site will be built on the same basic premise
with some added goodies that I will have to figure out how to implement.
>

>
>I am very excited about moving this forward.  At the same time I am very patient concerning
everyone's schedules.  Those that are committed to these causes are often quite busy rightfully so.
>

>
>Also, if you are interested in representing the state of Washington and your organization on our
site, please let me know.
>

>
>Thanks again for your time.
>

>
>Regards,
>

WHO WE ARE

In the early summer of 2005, Strength Over Speed (SOS) began with a group of peers who graduated from Project NEON’s crystal meth recovery program and other community supporters. At that time, there were few options for gay and bisexual men seeking alternatives to 12-step programs or treatment center aftercare groups.

Some guys were apprehensive about the 12-step format, as many people wanted to just talk to each other about individual paths of recovery but could not under the no-cross-talk guidelines. SOS groups are open discussion and sharing groups.

Many members attend both SOS and 12-step groups. As peers in recovery, we can provide emotional support and mentorship to individuals who are at an earlier stage of recovery. We have empathy and understanding for one another and can share our personal experiences with how we overcome challenges to maintain our recovery. We believe that as Peers we can support each other in our journey thru life after facing our addiction to Methamphetamine.

We do not promote one path of recovery over another.

We find that there is a genuine interest within the groups to engage in real discussion around issues of sex and sexual identity, HIV/ STDs and how we begin to see ourselves again. There are times that we speak openly and frankly on other issues such as emotions, housing options, isolation and relationships, all of which can be reclaimed.

Therefore gay and bi sexual men who want to recover from crystal use or addiction need to believe that recovery and an alternative lifestyle are possible.

We are still in active talks with S.O.S. (Seattle).  They like we have an admittedly hard time reaching support for their services; however, they like us are committed to providing "integrated concepts" to addiction and addiction recovery.

I suspect and hope that we will hear more from Strength Over Speed as they move to structure and move forward.  Strength Over Speed has expressed sincere commitment to our mutual cause and has faith in the logistical movement that we are both attempting to push forward.

WHAT WE DO

Strength Over Speed (SOS) is a grassroots, all volunteer community based project whose mission is to help gay and bisexual men maintain recovery from crystal meth addiction.

click to read Staying Off Crystal booklet

Through its weekly peer-led support groups, sober social activities, and community volunteer projects, SOS offers vital recovery support for gay and bisexual men, regardless of HIV status. This promotes positive health outcomes and reduces high risk sexual behavior associated with methamphetamine use.

Negative media about meth perpetuates the stigma, and both active and ex-crystal users feel isolated or fearful of talking openly about their addiction or recovery. As gay men in recovery, we felt compelled to diffuse those negative stereotypes and show that we can overcome our addiction and actively participate in relationships and within the community.

Our personal experiences with addiction and our desire to reduce the stigma we often face within our own community can help to portray a positive face to our communities, families and friends who have been directly or indirectly affected by our Methamphetamine use and those who are currently struggling with addiction.

Strength Over Speed currently has 5 group meetings in Seattle. All groups are peer led and peer facilitated.

Have You Quit?

It's tough to see people you love struggle with addiction. Below you'll find a couple of booklets and stories from family and friends of SOS members in recovery to help you better understand their challenges.
