Packages ground meats are typically high in fat because the butcher doesn't normally trim away the excess fat before grinding...sometimes even extra pieces of fat are added into the meat. These days you can look for specially marked lower fat packages and the lower the fat percentage, the less your meat will shrink when cooking. It is best to avoid ground meats that are more than 15% fat by weight.
What about ground turkey? Don't automatically assume it is better for you than ground beef. Available now nationwide, ground turkey is typically made from grinding together the dark meat, skin and fat. These products can be just as high in fat but can be a great healthy choice as long as you check the labels. |
