God speaks to us in many different ways.
My family always seemed to move around a lot, so when we moved just before my senior year of high school started, I was not surprised. I was deeply saddened, though. I had been very active in the church with the youth group, singing in the choir at the early service and keeping the church nursery at the late service. I had also become very active with community services by volunteering on the deaf bus for the dogwood festival and helping out at a summer camp for underprivileged children.
My senior year turned out to be the most horrible year of my life. I had no friends, the church didn’t have a youth group, I was not allowed to participate in the half time shows with the marching band because I didn’t go to the summer practices and I didn’t get to keep any of my ribbons and trophies from the track team because the school was brand new and needed to build up their showcase. To top things off, I even got stood up for the prom.
Towards the end of the school year, I met a girl named Teresa. We became really good friends and did everything together. I soon found out that she did drugs, but I figured as long as I didn’t do them, I would be ok. She invited me to her house for a party. She said she wanted me to meet someone, but would understand if I didn’t feel comfortable going. I told her that I would be there.
The night of the party, it was already dark when I left my house and I had to stop and get gas in my car before heading over. Leaving the gas station I would have to cross the highway; and it was a dark highway because there were no street lights. I remember pulling out onto the highway and I remember a loud noise. The guy that hit me didn’t have his lights on and didn’t see me pull out onto the highway. He hit me full speed in the driver’s door and firewall. I was not wearing a seat belt at the time and was thrown to the passenger side of the car. I don’t remember much of anything after that, except talking to the paramedics and the state troopers. The paramedic said if I had had my seat belt on, I would have died. He said God had his hand on my shoulder that night.
The next day, my dad took me down to see the car. I was amazed; it was pretty much squished in half. How I walked out of that car with only a couple of bruises?I just found it hard to believe. I also called my friend to apologize for not going to her party. She said it was a good thing I was not there. A fight had broken out. One person ended up in jail and two people ended up in the hospital.
I felt a renewed hope that I had a purpose in life. I didn’t know what it was, but I had a feeling it would be special.
