While you folks are on the topic of helping folks with 'puter problems, I have a question or two. I got mine from a business and there are a lot of things in it I don't want or need, plus In the last eighteen months or so I downloaded a bunch of things that I can no longer remember the use for. I would like to clean everything out and start over. Can this be done? I have saved just about everything that I know I want, but there are a kazillion files that have no meaning to me (good, bad, useful, or unnecessary). How do I go about cleaning this stuff out and identifying what I need? HJ

Hello Huey! Longtime No See! UnInstallers are great, you must have one and you can also download them at WWW.download.com How-to clean up your hard drive: EMPTY YOUR RECYCLING BIN! Right click the icon on your desktop and change the maximum space of your recycling bin DELETE INTERNET stuff start/settings/control panel/Internet options now... The start/find/files and folders thing is going to save your ass here There are, residing on your hard drive thousands of JPEG's, bitmaps, wave files, GIF's, helpme's,art files, you name it. Type in *.wav to find wave files *.JPG to find pictures *.gif etc. ( * ) means find everything after me so it will find every specific file extension you put after that asteric.... *.* means find everything, so this command will display every file on your computer or at least attempt to, I think 10,000 is the limit. But now you can pick and choose between files and delete the ones you are sure you don't need... there will be lots of them, hundreds of MB. Their locations will also be shown so you can see what programs use them... lots of GIFs, lots of wave files... JPEG's that would shock a serial rapists... when I first did this I found over 5000 JPEG's in my temporary Internet folders some good, some bad. But every little picture you see on your computer screen is only there because it was stored on your hard drive,, banners etc. you can send whatever jpegs you find to [email protected]

Is there a way to clean out everything and reintroduce the O/S on up, so that I would have only that which I require? Or would that give me even more headaches? I still have: Used 3.53GB and Free 4.48GB. HJ

WOW Huey, you have plenty of space, you certainly don't need anymore for Windows to function properly but here's how you remove the programs that are installed on your computer: Go to start /settings/control panel/add and remove programs... at the install/uninstall tab... just highlight the programs you want to remove and click " uninstall" it's a pretty good UnInstaller... You can then go to the Windows setup tab and goof around in there too, add a little bit, remove a little bit. It may ask you to put your Windows CD into your CD ROM to get some files. And, you should have already done this... go to the startup disk tab and make yourself a startup disk! The startup disk is used when one or more of your Windows system files are corrupted.. a great life saver, if your computer doesn't start you just put in your startup floppy turn your computer off, then turn it back on and, God willing your computer starts back up!

Did the start-up disk and removed that which I knew could go, but there is a lot of stuff in several folders that I know nothing about. I would hate to screw things up by deleting all unknowns. HJ

Oh, and about reinstalling Windows over the old Windows... your files will be safe, but any programs that your Windows disk doesn't automatically install i.e the ones you have installed after the fact may act a little weird and saved files associated with those programs might be lost. I've done it a couple of times and was unsatisfied with the results... I like to just dump Windows completely... and if you are willing to dump Windows completely you should definitely pick up a partitioning program... but there is another way... you can partition your hard drive very easily without any special programs when you are dumping Windows (but there is a catch, you can only create FAT 16 partitions, which you don't want...) you can go here just to take peak around anyhow... it's in DOS... might be at the start/programs/MS-DOS, if not you can always " restart in DOS mode" from your shut down menu..in DOS, just type in FDISK you'll then see a black screen with a big scary message asking you if you want to enable this disk for large disk support, click yes (But read the rest of this message about FAT 32 first, most likely you have it)but if you don't you may want bug out at this time by pressing escape but if you do stay you can click around without burning any bridges and just press"escape" if you get nervous.... you then return to the DOS prompt and from there just type EXIT. Large disk support... your computer stores data in little packages called clusters, as hard drives got bigger way back when, they had to find more efficient ways to store and access all this information on these huge disks , this is why FAT 32 was introduced ... odds are your computer is running FAT 32. (Click the my computer icon on your desktop then right click C: and select" properties") you'll see FAT 16 or FAT 32. File Allocation Table ......32bit Advantages?.. 16 will store a pencil in a shoebox , that's the smallest box it has...32 has boxes four to eight times smaller Disadvantages?... Microsoft drive space disk compression does not work on 32 and you cannot repair a FAT 32 partition unless you boot from a Windows emergency diskette... which you've already made! Okay now I'll reread and check for spelling errors
