Thanks for the suggestions everyone.  We ended up wiping the hard drive and starting over.  My son and a friend of his planned to transfer all our files and folders to our other computer, then do a clean install of Win XP, and then re-load all our files and folders.  They did this late last night and I do not see that they were able to save anything so I guess we are starting from scratch again.  Oh, well.
