I'm new and have never invested.  I'm 42 and have 401(k) already set up.  I have little credit card debt.

A couple of months ago, I got about $50K from my divorce settlement and it's sitting in my savings account making a few cents a month.  I wanted to buy a house but I really think the price of the houses in California will go down in a year or so.

So, I want to do something with $50k before I buy a house at the end of next year.  I don't think keeping that money in my savings account is a smart thing.  I don't know mutual fund will give me enough returns, either.  CDs?  Nah.

So, I have been watching Dream Works, Wynn Resorts, Starbucks, and Martha Stewart.  These stocks seem to be doing well, but I would like your opinion.  If you have other stock to recommend, would you please, please, please tell me????  I want to buy stock that has less risk but will give me some return that is more than mutual fund.  I don't know if that's possible....

I would really appreciate it if you guys take a few moments and give me some advice.

dg & Beta,
Did you notice the part where I said I am only gonna put away $250 mo for investments and another $12 mo for the service fee?  I should have been more specific with another rule:  Never invest money you can't afford to lose.  This is money I believe I can afford to lose.

That's your best rule. Never break it and the rest won't matter.

Sooo.... We have new members?
Cool.
Posted this earlier over on SI... for those dollar/gold/dow followers. Like me.

Very interesting commentary nspolar. I have Dec 06 for the high in the DOW, based on a chart that I cannot transfer yet, but it is very strong and back to 1970. I also have a severe bounce of the dollar at 73, but can see no lower. I am intuiting some connection between foreign investment and the lower dollar (buying up both currency and stocks before the Fed pump dries up completely, and before the supposed re-strengthening... the World is buying USD and shares low, hoping to sell dollar-high, relatively speaking).

I therefor surmise that the DOW extravaganza will have a turn down when the dollar turns up in any meaningful way and I have that at 73. And, of course, that gold will bottom at that time too. It appears that the charts align (XAU, USD and INDU) to hit a high at 11,000 to 11,200 fast. Meaning XAU (not the metal) drops, dollar drops (perversely) then the entire thing reverses. A "C" or 3 on all three charts seems to fit here.

Beyond that... crystal ball gets cloudier...

What happens below USD 73, I have no idea...
Like "What happens if INDU breaks its ATH?
I have it going to 15,200 so maybe your dollar is right, and gold gets back into its inverse relationship to USD... Eh?

Anyway, thanks for your insights,
i.

Max, I was reposting something I sent to "nspolar" on SI... just IMHO and FWIW anyway... etc.... down today and tomorrow and I buy more dangerous and alarming options on the Dow so do not listen to me newbies. I am a dangerous woman... or so I'm told.

I am a newbie to this board. However I have been investing for some time. To the first time investor: dull and boring stocks with dividends. Also get a financial advisor. Uncle Bob is great for helping with the bar b q pit, but he might for sure burn through your money with his advice. Patz

Are you still looking for a better investment route?  I will be happy to share with you what I know about the Forex market, this is a new and exciting area to look into.  You can actually set up a demo account for free and watch your investment grow, before using any of your own money.  Let me know if you would like some more infomration.
