‘Awesome’ journey still holds some uncertainty

Dreadlocked heartthrob Jason Castro had a good night Aug. 9 at the DCU Center. His three-song set, part of the American Idols Live tour, showcased him at his expressive best — although it was sometimes hard to hear the soft-voiced singer above the piercing screams of his devoted fans. “He is so hot,” one young woman said to her equally mesmerized female friend as Castro, the fourth-place finisher in season seven of the smash TV show, took the stage.

With practice born of living for months under an unblinking spotlight, however, Castro has loosened up. What at first seemed like an interview that would garner only one-word answers quickly developed into a series of longer, more thoughtful responses that reflected an innate sensitivity, a deep idealism and an intelligence that sometimes is shadowed by his self-effacing nature.

Idols Live meet and greet at Gwinnett Arena

I got a few more tidbits from Michael Johns about this upcoming post tour plans. He will be working with Andrew Farriss from INXS in October on a song. He’s also hoping to attend the Elton John celeb-am tennis match in a few months. He also expects to move back to Atlanta next year. He’s working with the same people as Elliott Yamin to get his album out. He also gave a shout out to www.michaeljohnsonline.com  for being such a great fan site.

He described the umbrella bit they did last night at Charlotte, which is already online. Michael, Syesha and I watched it on this computer: Johns said by pure coincidence, he had heard Turner Classic Movies had paid homage to Gene Kelly of “Singing in the Rain” fame that same day.

‘Idol’ winner David Cook announces album release date

But fans shouldn’t expect to see those songs that led him to the finish line on the new album.

“I’ve spent the last year of my life singing other people’s songs,” Cook said. “At this stage it’s not looking too promising (having his performances from the show on his album). I definitely want to progress past that and be an artist.”

Cook, 25, is working with producer Rob Cavallo on his album. Cavallo has worked with artists such as Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Kid Rock, Goo Goo Dolls and Dave Matthews Band.

According to Billboard.com, Cook has, so far, collaborated with Collective Soul’s Ed Roland, Our Lady Peace’s, Raine Maida and others. His album will be released through 19 Recordings/RCA Records.

Archuleta filming at Wynn’s Pond

Filmmakers were set up once again at picturesque Wynn’s Pond in Coweta County Tuesday shooting scenes for an upcoming release: the first music video from “American Idol” season seven runner-up David Archuleta.

On site all day for the shoot were Blackdog Films production crew members, the young video cast — some plucked from talent and modeling agencies in neighboring counties — excited mothers and, of course, Archuleta himself.

The group was also excited about a crew coming from “Entertainment Tonight” to tape a segment Tuesday for the entertainment news show.

PROMISES, SCHMROMISES…

So, I promised that I wouldn’t really try to process all of this madness until I got an extended break, but something happened today that really made me reflect. Well, I may be getting too generic. A lot of small things have happened lately that correlated into some fresh perspective. Let me explain…

We had a much-needed, much-deserved day off in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, today. I took it as an opportunity to rest myself not only physically, but mentally. The strain of trying to put everything I have into this tour, on top of the scheduling conflicts that inevitably arise from doing a record while on the road, and not to mention the crazy press commitments, have left me, and all the idols, with an almost humorous non-distinct stare as we enter the home stretch of this tour. So, today I did little but stay in bed and walk around. I went with MJ and Chik to go see “Tropic Thunder”. I give it 4/5 stars. Tom Cruise was the only part I didn’t like about it. Don’t know why…

After the movie, we went and grabbed dinner, and then split up upon returning to the hotel. I went out to the beach, and plopped down on a chair to watch the waves and the lightning in the distance. (Hurricane/Tropical Storm/Massive Nuisance Fay) All at once, it hit me full on what has happened to me this last year. I thought about Omaha, and my brother, Andrew, and the Green Mile, and the top 12 red carpet event, and the hotel, and the finale, and this tour. It really became apparent to me at that moment that the tour will be done in about a month, and we’ll all, hopefully, go on to amazing careers and lives away from this “Idol Machine” and apart from one another. After a year with these guys, that thought looms ominous and scary.

I bring all this up to make this point: There were times from the beginning of college to the time that I made the show where I truly was unsure of what I was supposed to be doing. I’ve been a professional musician of some degree since I was 15, but could I ever really “make it”? This last year has allotted me a new inner peace, and I’m more thankful for that than anything else. It’s nice to have the title of American Idol, and the privilege of making a major-label record, but more than all of those things, I want to say thank you for the support you guys have shown, but more importantly the understanding you guys have shown to my limitations as I try to meander through this very new lifestyle of actually being acknowledged for doing something I love. I’m giving everything I can to make sure that you guys feel as appreciated as you’ve made me feel over the last year. Here’s to many more.

~D

Exclusive Interview: David Archuleta’s ‘Crush’ tops charts

So, I just had to ask: Does Archuleta have a “Crush” of his own? “I’m just afraid to mention anything now,” confessed Archuleta. And he’s right to be afraid. Recently, after one of Archuleta’s female friends attended his show, she received a deluge of hate mail from Archuleta’s fans. “They said, ‘You’re not good enough for him, and you’re ugly,” Archuleta said, shuddering. “You can see why people want to keep things to themselves.” Despite the fact that his rabid fans harassed his guest, however, Archuleta continued to defend them. “They’re just really protective,” he concluded.

It was one of Archuleta’s loyal fans, in fact, who first informed him of his chart-topping success. “She told me and I was like, ‘Are you serious?’ ” Archuleta recalled. He never dreamed his first single would debut at No. 2. “I was like, maybe it will get to the top 40. I just can’t believe it.”

Rihanna Fends Off Archuleta Atop Hot 100

Rihanna begins a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Disturbia,” but barely fended off the best chart debut in more than 18 months, in the form of David Archuleta’s “Crush.” The track sold 166,000 downloads in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and opens at No. 2.

The last song to open so high was Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” in late January 2007. “Crush” also scores the best opening by an “American Idol” finalist with a song not performed on the show.

David Archuleta Keeps His Fans Up To Date From The Set Of His ‘Crush’ Video

“American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta took some time out of his busy schedule to post a clip on YouTube, updating all his fans on just what’s going on in his life.

The 17-year-old, who’s in the middle of the American Idols Live! Tour, talked enthusiastically about being on the set of the video for his first single, “Crush,” in the woods in Georgia. “It’s my first music-video shoot for my very own song; it’s really exciting,” he said. “I wanted to let you know I’ve been doing well.”

The roller coaster year of local ‘American Idol’ Luke Menard

“I was just starting to get my foot in the door,” he recalled for us earlier this week as he readied for a reunion with his best buds in the long-running a cappella group, Chapter 6 (7 p.m. Sunday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Normal).

“Then, right after my biggest audition, for ‘General Hospital,’ I found out I was sick …”

That diagnosis came in May: stage II of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, whose symptoms first manifested themselves as a tightness in his chest, suggesting, at worst, an annoying cold.

Breathing difficulties, headaches and blurred vision followed. A chest X-ray revealed a mass that led to the cancer diagnosis.

The encouraging news: The disease is one of the most curable forms of cancer if detected early enough.

Archuleta won’t talk about romances

American Idol runner-up David Archuleta is terrified of discussing his love life in the media after his female friend received hate mail.

The singer recently invited his gal pal to watch him at a concert, and was stunned after his companion was bombarded with hateful messages from jealous fans who spotted her in the audience.

And the 17-year-old insists the experience has left him wary of talking about his personal life to the press.

He says, “I’m just afraid to mention anything now. They said (to her), ‘You’re not good enough for him, and you’re ugly.’

“I can see why people (celebrities) want to keep things to themselves.”

Marathon Near the End for the American Idol Finalists

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Four hours before the curtain went up for another sold-out performance, the 10 stars of “American Idols Live” were scattered throughout the grounds of the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

Some were out by the West Gate signing autographs for a gathering of fans. Some were getting their hair and makeup done, or rehearsing their tunes. And some, including David Archuleta, Chikezie, Kristy Lee Cook, Carly Smithson and Michael Johns, were meeting the media in the basement of the facility.

Idol Chartwatch, September 8: New Idol Releases on the Horizon

Josiah Leming, the Season 7 castoff who made it anyway, has announced that he will be releasing an eight-song EP on October 28. The album will be sold on iTunes. Josiah’s full-length album will be released in January.

David Cook’s debut has a November 18 release date. This is the first firm date for the album. David Archuleta’s album still has a November 11 release date listed on Amazon. As we have learned, however, these release dates tend to slip, especially for newly-minted Idols.

Kellie Pickler’s second album is set for release September 30. Amazon has two entries listed for Kellie Pickler, both a single and double-disc version.

David Cook’s first single, “Light On,” produced by Grammy winning producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Kid Rock) is released radio this week and will be made available on iTunes on 9/30.

“Light On” will premiere exclusively on AOL Music on Wednesday, September 24, on AOL’s pop culture news site, PopEater.com. Earlier this year, Cook had the biggest single premiere of the year on PopEater.com with “The Time of My Life” garnering more than one million streams in 24 hours.
