Songwriter Kara DioGuardi will be the 4th judge in season 8. Some of the artists she has written for are Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood and Pink. |

I heard that Simon Cowell takes over as producer now that Lythgow has left. That should really make it interesting. |

I have no idea who this person is but hopefully she'll help the show. I really didn't have any problems with just three judges and although I didn't always agree with their comments, I enjoyed hearing them so I hope she can make things interesting. Sheryl |

I had heard that too, Terri. Nigel probably saw the rating tumbling and got out while the getting was good. They really need to make some changes but I am not real sure a 4th judge is it. Maybe they will bring her in, establish her and then find a way to diplomatically get rid of Paula. She is useless. Other changes I have heard suggested and agree with are: - No more mentors from the dark ages. Pick more current popular singers and groups. The older viewers may enjoy seeing LuLu or Barry Manilow but the contestants and the target viewers aren't interested in them. And while we are at it, how about some duel mentors and see who's contestants do better......Reba vs. Martina.....Christina vs. Kelly......Jesse McCarney vs. Joe Jonas.
- Revamp the theme nights so that they aren't forcing the contestants to pick songs from small catalogs or catalogs where most can't find anything that will work (Dolly anyone?). Stick with 70's Disco, Classic Rock, 60's folk music, 50's Jazz/Blues, Modern Country, Birthday year, Love Songs, 80's Pop.....big catalogs with lots to choose from. And no do overs like with Beatles night.
- Shorten the performance shows: How about the first couple weeks be Duets so that the show doesn't have to be 2 hours of horrible performances. The worst pair will be up for elimination and then the judges choose the from that pair for the first and second weeks eliminations.
- Go back to 1/2 hour elimination shows!! And while we're at it, stop with the long drawn out games that Ryan plays while announcing who is safe and who isn't.
- Idol Gives Back: Don't do this during the competition, if it must be done, do it right before the tour starts and bring the top 10 back to give a taste of what they will be doing on tour.
- Fix the Voting: Only 10 votes per phone line allowed (or even 20) like DWTS and allow computer voting. That would get rid of DialIdol.com and make it more fair and more likely that the contestants most viewers hate will get voted off when they deserve to be.

I'll add a few of articles I've read on the subject. I've been lazy with posting and reading lately. I haven't felt up to par. I hope they don't change too much. I'd like to see the mentors from the dark ages go away. I also like to have less old themes than we had season 7. A night where the contestants could sing in their favorite genre so that I'd know what type of music they would put out there. I really don't want duets, so I hope they don't consider that one. I wouldn't want to add computer voting, but I would like to see the phone voting limited per household. |

Simon Cowell: Very Big Changes Ahead On ‘American Idol’, So Long Top 24? With auditions for season eight of “American Idol” already underway you can expect a major overhaul for the new season, according to everyone’s favorite snarky judge, Simon Cowell. In a conference call from London with reporters this afternoon, Cowell said he and “Idol” producers have already begun meetings in the UK with the production team and Fox executives to discuss what he would like to see happen. With the exit of executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe recently announced, Simon thinks the show will get a much-needed face-lift. “You must never depend on one person. I don’t think we would have had the success initially without Nigel but we are onto our eighth season. It feels like it’s going to be a different show this year because of it and we will see whether that’s an advantage or a negative.” Simon, who helped create the show, is prepared to step into a larger role behind the scenes, Access Hollywood |

“American Idol’s” Controversial Change “American Idol” has gone and done the unthinkable - they’ve shocked me. Yes, it turns out after seven seasons of “…after the break” predictability, the producers had one more trick up their sleeves for year eight: adding a fourth judge. Apparently, they don’t remember how badly this idea tanked when they tried to fill a fourth seat during the sixth season’s audition rounds. You know who does remember though? Paula Abdul. It seems her lucidity comes and goes. “[Producers] always tried for a fourth judge because it follows the format of the original show, but … we haven’t had much luck with that working. But we’re going to give it another try,” Paula said (in her least convincing “go-team-go” voice) this morning on the John Jay & Rich radio show. NY Post |

New “American Idol” Judge Kara DioGuardi Threatens Paula Abdul This week’s addition of a fourth American Idol judge has left the loopy Paula Abdul, a series-long Idol staple, walking on eggshells. The “Forever Your Girl” singer is convinced the introduction of 37-year-old songwriter Kara DioGuardi is show producers’ way of edging her closer to the door. “Paula is trying to put a happy face on this situation, but she feels very threatened that a younger, internationally successful female is joining the cast of judges,” an Idol snitch dished in this week’s edition of the National Enquirer.
