It's a few steps shy of proclaiming, "Gun Ban an Abject Failure at Curbing Crime," but today's Washington Post Metro did trumpet on the front of its November 13 Metro section that the 31-year old D.C. handgun ban has not proven to be a crime deterrent.

With his somewhat subdued headline, "Crime Data Underscore Limits of D.C. Gun Ban's Effectiveness," staff writer Paul Duggan unearthed the political calculus for the 1976 gun ban, as well as the Post's role as chief journalistic cheerleader for the law the federal D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals found unconstitutional earlier this year.

In making by far their boldest public policy decision, the District's first elected officials wanted other jurisdictions, especially neighboring states, to follow the lead of the nation's capital by enacting similar gun restrictions, cutting the flow of firearms into the city from surrounding areas.

"We were trying to send out a message," recalled Sterling Tucker (D), the council chairman at the time.

Nadine Winters (D), also a council member then, said, "My expectation was that this being Washington, it would kind of spread to other places, because these guns, there were so many of them coming from Virginia and Maryland."

Duggan quotes other politicians who eagerly supported, and continue to support the ban, noting that at the time even they admitted the ban would do nothing to make citizens safer (emphasis mine):

Too bad that the ones who blamed the guns in Virginia and Maryland for gun violence in DC didn't try explaining why those states are so much less violent. Even Arlington just across the river--ALONG WITH THE ENTIRE STATE OF VIRGINIA--has a murder rate lower than Washington DC. So if guns are the cause of the violence, then how can this be?

I've yet to hear anyone give an explanation of this. One made a pathetic attempt, but even other gun banners ignored him as it was so stupid (something about DC authorities winking at buying guns--still no word on why Virginia was so much less violent).

Btw, from another Washington Post article, a Texas cop that moved to the UK considers the UK more dangerous in terms of violence:

Laz,
"limits of effectiveness" ....gee, why can't they say it does not work. Looking forward to the Supreme Court hearing this case, and seeing the liberal news media pressuring Justice Kennedy to ignore the facts and rule on the emotions of "if it only saves one life..."
Thanks for the info.

I was happy to see that the second try at killing Christians ended the gun mans career with a well placed shot. And the guard was a woman. How will the liberals handle that one???

Sarge,
Yes, the New Life Church is the same one that had the issues earlier with Haggard not being sure about his sexual orientation ..... but  that is another topic. This is a church that had some 7,000 people there at the time of the Colorado Springs shootings, and the security had been beefed up due to the earlier shootings. So this is a classic Christian security guard (can you imagine the offerings from 7,000 plus people) who fired accurately without hitting any bystanders, and closed this chapter with a minimal loss of life so unlike the Omaha mall scene. I am very pleased with the outcome though I offer my sympathies to all those families who lost very good people to this gunman. If this does not make the case for concealed carry, then we sure have a lot of morons in our population.

By the way, my priest has no concerns about my carrying concealed in our parish. We have big concerns about Democrats trying to rattle our cage about our homophobic beliefs and actively promoting school prayer, and you can never underestimate how rabid the lefties have gone. We have Democrats in the parish but they all voted Bush over Gore and Kerry due to the radical leanings of those two.

You got that right Steve. Did you see the picture of that gal in the Springs? She is one good looking woman. And single too. And a ex cop and level headed too. Man, someone should be dating that woman with a ring in his pocket.

For the most part, the media is downplaying this, trying to make her sound like a professional instead of a volunteer. Just like they did with the last mall shooter that was stopped by an off duty cop that carried a gun in concealed despite the "no weapons" notice and then cornered him until more cops could arrive (they just say, "killed in a shootout with police").

And then there's this...and it's not a pretty site:

But overall, they're choosing to downplay it as much as they can, hoping that it will disappear down the memory hole (just like they did with the Appalachian Law School Shooting).

If politicans were  honest and stopped paying the little guy to do their dirty work.
The crime rate in Washington DC would drop.
