Tango,
 This is precisely why I teach my students to do a personal weapons check each and every time they pick up a weapon .......without fail!
1... Point the muzzle in a safe direction.
2....Remove the magaine (if the weapon has one)
3....Rack the action or open the bolt if it's a bolt gun.
3....Check the chamber and breach area for ammunition
4....Report " weapons clear" if in a classroom setting or on the firing line.
5....If you recieve a weapon from someone else, do not take their word for it when they say the weapon is safe.... Verify! do your own check!
6....This weapons check should be automatic when ever you pick up a firearm!
