Sunday, my 85 year old mother was riding with my Stepfather. For reasons unclear, he lost control of the vehicle, going into a ditch and hitting a culvert. Minor spinal problems for him, but for her, the impact caused a subdural hematoma that was operated on to remove a clot. Comotose, she was on a ventilator and numerous meds to keep her BP up. With damage to the left hemisphere, the prognosis was grim. She would never recover from this. From childhood, I recall her telling me that, if a situation like this ever occurred, she said, "Slip me a 'Mickey' and drop kick me through the Golden Gates. I'll never live like that." At three o'clock this afternoon, we all took the decision to withdraw the meds that were keeping her pressure up. She passed without ever regaining consciousness. Born on a farm, she always worked with people....first with the Community Welcome Wagon and later with New York Life Insurance. Ten years ago, after losing my father to an aneurysm, she remarried at the age of 75. She always bragged that she could sit, cross-legged on the floor and drink corn liquor out of a jug or sip the martinis with the best of them......has the best dirty jokes in town and was loved by everyone she met. I am always meeting total strangers that knew her. An amazing woman and I'll miss her forever. She was my mom, Ankie Pontious I love you girl....rest well. Thanks for letting me vent. Lazarus~ |

Laz, I am very sorry for your loss. From your post, she must have been fun to be around, and someone I would of liked to have known. I also lost my mother in August 2000 to cancer, and after watching her go thru the treatments & stuff which didn't help that much she wanted to stop. She was 83. I miss her alot, and wish she was still here. Take care buddy, atleast you enjoyed the time you had with her. Gunrockets |

Here's a link to her obit and, at the bottom, a video keepsake of her. A friend of mine sent me a reflection on her....It said, "She lived as though, when her feet hit the floor in the morning, Satan shuddered and said....'Oh shit, she's awake!'" |

Sorry to hear of your loss, Laz. So much of our personality comes from our mothers and how they treated life. I lost my mum just a year into her retirement, and I really missed her conversations. Too many folks today are bland to fit in rather than the colorful center of attention your mom was. I know who I would rather have around me taking life as far as possible. Cheers to the good memories of what was to be cherished. |

Sorry for your loss Laz. We have been together in this web site for a lot of years and I feel like a part of a big family. When one of our family has a loss it is a loss for all of us. I have written lots of stories and some of them were about my Mom and Dad. When they both passed away I was very glad I had written those stories. I would suggest that maybe it would be good therapy for you to sit down and put to paper the story of your family. If nothing else it will be one way to pass on the remarkable life of your Mom and Dad. It should not be forgotten. Sarge |

Gotta tell you...she had the best dirty jokes in town. Full of piss & vinegar was her way of life. I can't go into any business without someone saying "Oh, are you related to Ankie?" Damn...I have nowhere to hide! My friend...she had "Six League Boots" and I'll never be able to fill them.... |

Sorry for your loss Laz. It is always so hard to let go of the ones we love the most. She lived a long and sounds like a very happy life. As I said before She is not dead she's just ways. You'll see her again and what a day that will be. Wicked |
