Probably a few of you have been down in bed for long times and know how it feels to be tortured by daytime TV.  After 5 weeks in the house and most of that on the couch with his leg elevated, Sarge could not stand it anymore. He had made a deal with PFC Trent to take him to the range on a Friday when his Mom was working but that fell through when Trent came down with an infected ear. He was a miserable puppy. But Sarge had all the guns and ammo packed up and the two new carbines ready to go.
Soooo....Sunday evening he lay in bed planning.  First how to get those heavy boxes of ammo to the Jeep Wagoneer.  Then how to get all the rest of the gear plus the guns to the Jeep.  "AHA!" Sarge said, "Woops almost woke up Lt. Linda, hope she thought I was just sneezing."  What he came up with was Trents little wagon that was still in the Majestic three story high shed.  If he could get that out he could put all the gun things in it and pull it to the Jeep by tying it to his belt in back. "OK guys I know this is going to look silly but Sarge hasn't been shooting for two months. Besides the neighbors around Sarge are used to seeing Sarge do silly things."
And it worked. It took three trips and on the way down the slopping driveway Sarge very nearlywas run over by the wagon every time. After the hour and a half of loading the Wagoneer Sarge decided he might as well take the little wagon with him, he could use it to drag the gear up to the firing line. So off he went. There is a lot to be said for Power Steering, Power Brakes and Automatic transmissions.  Sarge was able to sail down to Boulder Rifle Club with no problems. And as luck would have it, another club member was coming in the gate just as Sarge arrived. That made it easier for he didn't have to get out on his crutches to open the gate and then close it behind him. And the other fellow helped him get his gear to the firing line. That is the way gun owners help each other in our country.
So for 4 hours Sarge had the time of his life. The range was all but deserted and his friend put up a half a dozen targets for Sarge so he wouldn't have to drag his way through the gravel to the target boards.
Now the two carbines.  The Hi-Point was in 40S&W cal. and really was a nice handling little rifle. One thing Sarge wasn't expecting was recoil. After all most of you have fired a handgun chambered for 40 S&W and it is not excessive in the recoil department. But in this little carbine, surprise.  Yes it had a rubber butt pad (hard rubber I might add) but even with that the little carbine kicked the daylights out of sarge. Not like his .458 but just a sharp bite and with only a T-shirt to soak up the snap he ended up with the red mark of courage on his shoulder. The sights were WWAAY off. And he had to just about bottom out the rear sight to get the holes out of the air. But after a couple of boxes (100 rds) the group was in the black at 25 yrds and could be found at 50 yards but naturally a larger group.
Then the Ruger Mini-30. This was the new model and was supposably more accurate and with tighter tolerances. The recoil of this rifle/carbine was not bad at all. but after shooting a box of 20 rounds and finding only 1 hole on the target, there was definately something wrong. Moving into the 25 yard range the shots were found but they were on the target next to the one Sarge was shooting at. Looking at the sights they looked like they were in the middle of the barrel but the bullets thought differently. And the only way to adjust the sights was with an allen wrench which Sarge didn't have in his Range Box.
So much for the rifles. The rest of the afternoon Sarge spent with a S&W Model of 1917 Double action 45 acp w/ full moon clips. And the counterpart Colt Mdl. 1917 also in 45 acp. Haven't had these two revolvers out for years. Almost forgot how much fun they could be.
Then the Phone rang.
"OH OH"  Should he answer it?  It could be PFC Trent. And then it could be Lt. Linda. Or maybe he might luck out and it would just be BATF or IRS.
And then it could be an emergency. Dang I hate telephones.
"Where are you?" said a little voice that unfortunately Sarge recognised quite well.
"Errrr do you want a real good story or the truth?" Asked Sarge.
"Who is driving?"
"No one." replied Sarge (and that was the truth)
"Where are you?" she asked again.
And then some fool in the next range had to touch off a 44 mag.
"Are you at the rifle range?" asked Lt. Linda
"Well sorta." Sarge replied. (actually he was at the pistol range)
"How did you get there?" demanded Lt. Linda.
Well he knew this qwestion was coming and he had no answer but the truth.
"I drove the Jeep Wagoneer." Sarge sighed
"I am very unhappy with you." Lt. Linda stated.
"Thats funny cause until this dang old phone range I was very happy with me." Sarge replied.
And now Sarge has to exert his Boss of the House role.
"And I still got lots of ammo to shoot up so I won't be home till after 6 pm" Sarge expounded "And have supper ready when I get home!...........Please?
Well Taco Bell isn't all that bad when you are hungry enough.
Sarge
