I know my Subway did this while I worked there and pretty sure they still do. So this is what you do. IF you like their bread call up there the day before you want to pick up the bread and ask if you could have their old bread in the morning. You have to get there right when they open to do this though. Ours here open at 9..but if you call the day ahead, they'll leave a note for the morning crew not to throw the bread away. That's what they do.. throw all that bread away. And you can freeze it, use it that day, and or let it get stale and use it for bread crumbs. But I'm telling you..that's something lots of people are missing out on because they don't announce it. Normally someone is there around 8 am..so call them around that time to remind them and just say you are on your way or something. Just so when you get there the bread won't be thrown away. That alone should save some money. Even our cheap bread here is over a dollar, and the honey wheat bread is over two dollars. We use a lot of bread. So I know it'll save quite a bit and you can give it to the dogs as a treat I guess. LOL Or..act dumb when you call..and say "What do you do with your old bread the next day...oh you throw it away..well can I have it"... ha ha ha Kristy PS. If they say they "don't" do it.. just ask when the manager is in and talk to him/her. Because I know for a FACT.. they can't use that bread for any reason after their new bread is baked. It's against Subway Law (I was a store manager)! So.. if they try to act like that.. tell them well you know another store that does it..didn't think it would be a problem since they let you in on this..or sumn.. They will let ya have it. |

Great tip. It will make great peanut butter treats for the the dogs also. We have a Mrs Bairds store here that sells the expired breads, snacks, chips, and etc. Tessa |

I am surprised Subway does that, because so many other places will say they can't give it to you for "legal" purposes, like if you were to get sick on it or something. I know when I worked at Jewel, Dunkin' Donuts and another grocery store, we weren't allowed to give away the bread to individuals, but the local food pantry could come and pick it up! Go figure! I know someone who works there, will have to ask her next time I see her hehe Michelle |

Also...just to add...when I worked at KFC we couldn't even TAKE home the extra anything......biscuits, chicken..nothing...so we had to dump it all each night. Some of us brought "purses" (old bag, lined with foil) and as we dumped it in the garbage some just happened to land in my purse. Now, I was 16 when I worked there and I'm old now. But I know that we couldn't give anything away that was quality, but we could no longer serve due to time restrictions (closing leftovers...next day food..etc.) Teri C |

This may sound horrible to some but the truth is if you go to markets they are only allowed to keep their produce on the shelf for so long and if it hasn't even been taken out of the crates they must throw the crates away. Nothing wrong with the produce. I had a friend who would go to their bins and get great produce for free, lol, jeri |

Believe me.. I worked there for about three years. And there are no "legal" reasons.. why because they are ALL privately owned. They can't do anything.. why.. because the person who gets the old bread knows it's old bread and most all Subways will do this. If they tell you no then it is because they don't want to give it to you. When I worked the morning shift.. I always tried to give it away, I'm just that way. If I could, I would call your Subway up..and tell them I want the old bread for the morning.. then have so and so pick it up.. LOL.. It just makes me mad when people are hungry out there and some people won't help. The KFC..not sure on that one but I definately know about Subway. If an inspector comes in and notices there is old bread in the cool down rack they can get a type of violation (compliance issue) and it could cost the owner up to six thousand dollars. So.. I know all that good stuff.. LOL Hope this helps and hope you can get it. Kristy |

There was a show on TV about dumpster divers, I think it was in NYC, anyway, they saved hundreds of dollars going into dumpsters behind grocery stores and getting the good stuff they threw away!! Me, I am too worried so don't do it, and wouldn't do it in the summer anyway hahaha Michelle |
