MONCHIQUE, Portugal (Reuters) - Portuguese police on Thursday searched an animal crematorium about 50 km (31 miles) from the Praia da Luz resort where four-year-old Madeleine McCann went missing, according to the owner of the crematorium.
"They asked me three times whether I knew or had spoken to the parents of the girl," said Evert Hendrik Hoos, the owner of the crematorium. "But it's impossible (for me to have known them)," he told Reuters.
Two police officers in plain clothes entered the crematorium at around 5:00 p.m. British time and wandered around the premises for about 30 minutes, including inside the furnace, according to a Reuters reporter at the scene.
The officers declined to comment on whether they were searching for Madeleine, who vanished on May 3.
