He shall save His people from their sins.
                                                  --Matthew 1:21

Many persons, if they are asked what they understand by  salvation, will reply, "Being saved from hell and taken to heaven." This is one result of salvation, but it is not one tithe of what is contained in that boon. It is true our Lord Jesus Christ does redeem all His people from the wrath to come; He saves them from the fearful condemnation which their sins had brought upon them; but His triumph is far more complete than this. He saves His people "from their sins."

Oh! sweet deliverance from our worst foes. Where Christ works a saving work, He casts Satan from his throne, and will not let him be master any longer. No man is a true Christian if sin reigns in his mortal body. Sin will be in us--it will never be utterly expelled till the spirit enters glory; but it will never have dominion. There will be a striving for dominion--a lusting against the new law and the new spirit which God has implanted--but sin will never get the upper hand so as to be absolute monarch of our nature. Christ will be Master of the heart, and sin must be mortified. The Lion of the tribe of Judah shall prevail, and the dragon shall be cast out.

Professor! is sin subdued in you? If your life is unholy your heart is unchanged, and if your heart is unchanged you are an unsaved person. If the Saviour has not sanctified you, renewed you, given you a hatred of sin and a love of holiness, He has done nothing in you of a saving character.

The grace which does not make a man better than others is a worthless counterfeit. Christ saves His people, not in their sins, but from them. "Without holiness no man shall see the Lord." "Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." If not saved from sin, how shall we hope to be counted among His people. Lord, save me now from all evil, and enable me to honour my Saviour.

--Charles Spurgeon

Charles Spurgeon was a calvinist.

"The grace which does not make a man better than others is a worthless counterfeit".  Charles Spurgeon

That statement brings some verses of Scripture to mind very quickly.

Luke 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
Luke 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
Luke 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
Luke 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

And these:

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

1 Corinthians 12:23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.
1 Corinthians 12:24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

What is your point?

Yes, I know he was a Calvinist.  So?  What's YOUR point?

If your Christianity does not make you better than what you were, it's a sorry stinking brand of Christianity that you have.

My Christianity makes me a better man, a better neighbor, a better friend, a better husband, and a better Daddy.

For example, you could live next door to a man using his house for a meth factory, or a drug house, or a house of prostitution, or he could be a thief and enter your home when you are away and steal your belongings.

OR--you could live next door to me and I would protect your home from strangers and I do not use or make or sell illicit drugs or anything else sinful or illegal.

And you want to tell me I am not a better neighbor?  May you gain the kind of neighbors you would appreciate.

To Doz,

I am glad that you have the comfort of knowing your husband was saved before he passed away and that you will see him again.

.... If it's in line with the Word of God I use it... if I don't find I agree with them, I just move on....

That is where I find myself with the Calvinist doctrine. I don't agree with what they say so I moved on.

I once listened to a Calvinist tell a mother who's child had just passed away, that he was sorry but her baby was in hell because she wasn't a Calvinist, and that only babies born to Calvinist parents go to be with the lord. If he meant to give her comfort he totally missed the mark... how utterly cruel can someone get.

To Mr Wonder,

The most upright person in the most upright neighborhood could be a meth maker, or a thief, or an adulterer, or an envious person, my point, a sinner. (James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all) and no one would even know it. How many times do we hear it said on the news..."He/she was such a "good" person? I can't believe they did this".

OR--you could live next door to me and I would protect your home from strangers and I do not use or make or sell illicit drugs or anything else sinful or illegal.

And you want to tell me I am not a better neighbor? May you gain the kind of neighbors you would appreciate.

Sorry, but no thanks... I probably wouldn't fit in your "perfect" neighborhood... you would all be looking your down your noses at me, a lowly sinner saved by grace.

In Christ

Cindy

I am not sure a comparison between Calvin and the Apostle Paul is valid...  Calvin is not in God's Word... we were never told to follow Calvin...(though by the foolishness of preaching one could learn about their salvation) we were told to follow the Apostle Paul.  As far as Paul's ruthlessness, even Moses was a murderer, yet it is a good thing the Israelites followed him out of Egypt.

.... and I find myself less impressed with other books and authors......

Amen, me too.  I got so tired of having to check everything with the Word of God when I was reading something that didn't sound right and true.  I just made the decision that if I was going to study God's Word... I would do it through His Word, and not through man's word about what God said.  That way I didn't have to spend so much time on "I agree with that, or I don't agree with that... and spend the time studying what I knew I could agree with in every word.

In Christ
