Scripture: Revelation 22:16b?STRONG>I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.

Reflection: Jesus said he was the Alpha and the Omega. These are the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet. This was an idiom that meant "first and last." God the Son existed before creation and will continue long after creation has met whatever fate God has planned for it. If your life and mine is like a line drawn on paper, God's existence is like an unending piece of paper on which it is drawn.
(CS Lewis's metaphor).

The flower of the Davidic Monarchy was borne on the plant that was Abraham's descendents, but which had roots deeper than mere history. The root was fixed in the soil of eternity. This eternal son is God and co-eternal with the father—he is source, originator and creator. Paradoxically, this Son who precedes all things came to earth a thousand years after King David as a baby in a manger. That makes him both David's ancestor and descendent! When my father was a young boy he found very funny a poem entitled "I'm my own grandpa." For Jesus, however, it was theology, not fantasy.

Prayer Starter: Lord, we acknowledge the Divinity of Jesus and his eternal role as the begotten. Expand our understanding of your nature as the Triune God and show us the marvels of your involvement in human history. Amen.
