Motives Matter

Scripture Focus: Matthew 6:1-4
“When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret?/STRONG> (Matthew 6:3-4).

Our Master’s searching words deal with our motives for all our giving. Eternity alone will reveal how many thousands of times these words have been misused, quoted to excuse apathy or failure to respond to the prompting of God‚s Holy Spirit. Even more serious, they have become an excuse for unabashed, willful withholding from God and His work.

This Mandate from Christ is a warning against the selfish flaunting of an act of kindness, whether it be the bestowal of some talent or gift received from God, or the giving of financial aid to someone less fortunate than ourselves. His words are clear, “Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness?before men, to be seen by them?/STRONG> (vs. 1). When such an act is motivated purely for the purpose of being seen of others and bringing glory to ourselves, it becomes void of value in eternity’s point of view. When we give from the right motives, our Lord sees our hearts and what has prompted the giving and that is enough.

Insight: The proper motive for giving is the love of Christ compelling us (2 Corinthians 5:14). If others “glorify the Father in heaven?when we give, all is well (See Matthew 5:16).
