Scripture: Genesis 22:7, 8—Isaac said to his father
Abraham, "Father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son." He said, "The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" Abraham said, "God Himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So the two of them walked on together.
Reflection: Abraham responded to the Gospel 2000 years before the
Advent. His story has incredible impact for the believer. "Take your
son, your only son? The connection is undeniable. Vs 14?So Abraham called the place "The LORD will provide"; as it is said to this day, "On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided."
Jerusalem was built on the traditional "mount of the Lord," also
called Moriah. And it was in this city Jesus was crucified for the
sins of the world. Just coincidence?—I could never think so. We
celebrate Jesus' birth a few kilometers south in Bethlehem, the town where shepherds kept pens of lambs destined for the temple sacrifices in Jerusalem. Long before Jesus, ancient prophets said, "on the mount of the LORD it shall be provided."
Prayer Starter: Father, we thank you for the gift of your love—for
the provision of atoning sacrifice in Jesus. Bless us during this
season as we remember. Amen.
