The Shepherd Is the Lord
Scripture Focus: Psalm 23 “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul?/FONT> (Psalm 23:1-2).
Imagine hearing David sing the words of Psalm 23 for the first time. He wrote the song, composed its tune, and sang it to his own accompaniment. Shepherding was the only life David knew, and God opened his eyes to see important spiritual truths from a shepherd’s viewpoint.
David knew well that a shepherd’s job is to provide for his sheep. Our Shepherd leads, guides, and guards. He leads; His sheep follow.
Years ago in Scotland I held meetings for children and always asked, “Who can repeat Psalm 23??Many youngsters volunteered. One six-year-old girl gave the best translation of the first verse I have ever heard. “The Lord is my Shepherd so that’s all I want.?That’s not how the psalm reads, but that’s what it means!
When we find it difficult to trust Him, we can look at His record. He has never lost a sheep, nor will He ever leave us in the lurch. Whatever our need we can be assured that He is already fully aware of it, for He knows us.
Insight: Each new day can be a new beginning, and as the little girl said, “The Lord is my Shepherd, so that’s all I want.?BR> |
