Valley Presbyterian Church in the Calvin Center Meeting Room

(Enter/Park on southwest side, of the 2nd Bldg!)
6947 E. Mac Donald Drive, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, AZ 85253

The primary focus of this session will be centered on natural remedies and healthy practices. Our speaker, Dr. Karen van der Veer, is a Naturopathic Physician who provides a wide range of naturopathic therapeutics to her patients, (including acupuncture, herbal medicine and nutritional counseling).

During this session, Karen will discuss natural therapeutics (diet, herbs, supplementation, acupuncture, exercise and yoga), for helping to preserve kidney function, decrease blood pressure , reduce inflammation, manage stress, increase immune function and manage disease related pain.

If you've been curious about alternative and natural approaches to western medicine -  this program is for YOU!

Hi T2simon1,
I live in New York and have just started acupuncture treatments for liver cyst pain and traditional chinese medicinal herbs to help lower blood pressure and reduce further growth of cysts. What kind of herbs do you take?.I'm curious. I'm still am on meds tho...Avapro 300 mg. Is it possible to be tapered off?

Jess, I have never heard of anything, herbal or not, that definitely reduces the growth of cysts. If such a thing existed, there would be no need for the PKD Foundation or any other organization to raise funds for  research. Also, many of these "traditional Chinese medicinal" herbs might have detrimental effects on your body.
I have a huge problem with the idea of taking herbs for bp control. Medications such as Avapro have consistent dosage and purity and you  therefore can control how much you take. Herbs are not only not consistent in dosage and purity, but they might be more harmful than helpful.  If you are taking 300 mg doses of Avapro, I assume that your bp is quite high without it. As your kidney function fails, your bp gets higher, AND VICE VERSA.  This also has effects on your heart. Having high bp for a long time also contributes to left vetricular hypotrophy, a thickening of the walls of one portion of the heart. It takes time, but with proper bp control this can be stopped and even reversed.
Does your nephrologist know what you are doing?
Please let us know how the acupuncture is going. I hope that it relieves the pains.
Barb
