WELCOME NEW MSN USERS
IMPORTANT INRORMATION From MULTIPLY
Oct 17, '08 12:21
by Linda for everyone
With the announcement from MSN that MSN groups are closing, you are being overwhelmed with a lot of information and in some cases no information or information that is incorrect.  You certainly have a lot of questions and you don't know what to ask or where.  Here is some important immediate information you need right now to get started.

Please read this entire post before you do anything else because it addresses your content migration and will ensure that your content transfers smoothly.

When you register at Multiply, be sure and click on the confirmation link in the welcome email you will receive.  It's sent immediately and check your junk mail since sometimes it lands there.  You must click that first or you cannot access all of the features here.

Be sure and go to Settings, top right of every page after joining any group or creating one and set your email alerts,  so that busy groups don't flood your email.  You can opt however, to receive only posts, posts and replies and especially your Personal Messages in your email.

Do NOT create your groups yet if you are going to use the Migration Tool which will move all of your group content from MSN to your new group here.  This is IMPORTANT.  Because the Migration tool will CREATE your group for you.  If you manually create your group first, when you use the Migration tool you cannot reuse your Group User ID to use the migration tool.  You will be required to choose a NEW group ID.

The Migration Tool along with support for using it is being readied and should be released shortly.  If you have found a link to the migration tool on MSN that was posted before it should have been, and you click on it,  it will not work yet, and you should see the message of the release date.

However, this is a good time to become familiar with your personal site first while waiting, since groups and personal sites operate the same way except for a few differences and group features that you won't have on your personal sites.   When the migration tool is complete, you still have plenty of time to move your group and content to Multiply.

Group and User ID's when chosen cannot be changed.  This is part of t he URL of your site and group.  You can however set your user name and change as needed in Settings.  Group names can be changed also in "view group profile", then "edit group profile".  But your actual User ID and Group ID cannot be changed or reused, even if you cancel the account or group.  This is to protect users from anyone using a canceled user or group ID, giving anyone the impression it is YOU or your group that has come back.

IMPORTANT:  Multiply is aggressive regarding spam.  One of the features in place, is that EVERY NEW member of a group (and new groups) will require that the first posted question (usually in NOTES) clear Multiply's spam filter.  The post goes into Spam Moderation.  Admins in groups do not have access or control to clear this first post - it must go through Multiply.  Please do not delete your post!  It should clear quickly and you will receive notification on your inbox that your post has posted  as well as when you receive any replies to your posts.  This way, your first post to a group will clear moderation and further questions will go through immediately.

Most groups use the blog section for tutorials and the notes section for questions.  Be sure and scroll through those sections at the titles.  This will help with some of your questions and the terminology as well.  To post to any group that you have joined, click on POST, top of any page and then click on the group you wish to post to.  (It's easy to accidentally post it to your own site - we've all done it! - You can delete and edit anything you post anywhere - your site or any group you post or comment in.  You have full control over your posted content.)

Thanks and welcome to Multiply!!!

I re-checked out Multiply again over the weekend as my search on the internet led me to only Facebook forum sites. Although Multiply is in that same format when you join it can be changed to look close to MSN group formats. I decided to set up a personal site to see what a non-experienced HTML newbie like me could accomplish. I was pleasantly surprised at how many options, templates and other great features Multiply has, just in their personal sites.  More features are to be added in the coming weeks for the MSN migration. Playing around on the site for 2 days I would change to Mulitply now that I have given them a fair chance. They have no storage limit so I can store all my photo's and gifs in my personal site and drag them to my groups site. Yes, you can have your personal site open and click another window and open your group site beside it, then drag your pictures or gifs over to your posts, no copy and paste, no uploading unless you want to do it the old way. There are many help sites in Multiply like the one above to ease you into the new format. No more 10 MSN passports for posting graphics or paying for extra storage. Also, all my siggies and backgrounds do work in Multiply. I am finding that my personal site is laid out in a way that when I point to an icon it tells me exactly what it is for. Even the reply pages for message board icons are explained to make it easier for when new members. They also have more icons. Their message and reply pages are almost identical to ours and uploading pictures stored on your computer is a snap. Before you post your reply or message you can view it and spell check it, I like that idea ..... lol. They are compatible with Photobucket, Flickr, etc. and they are free like MSN groups. Multiply is working hard to add features to their site to help MSN groups with the change over. Basically they are a bit more advanced than MSN but in a user friendly way.

Although I will miss MSN groups as I have been with them since the beginning my search of over 15 other sites has prompted me to give Multiply a chance because it is by far the closest to MSN that I have seen. I set up my personal site (no different then MSN Spaces but more options) and I will leave my personal msn group till the Migration Tool is available. It will save hundreds of hours of work with transfering on my own. I think we were all just so angry with the announcement MSN made and then they don't really ever make any announcements, they just spring things on people that we all stressed over moving and what changes we would have to endure. I hope this helps relieve some stress as I know I was last week when all this came out .. lol. I personally think we will do fine in Multiply but the desicion altimately will be yours, I will follow.

Hugs Willow
