I contacted this rescue organization. The woman said they have helped rehome TRD before. There write up on "Jahno" indicates they have! The photos are really yellow, probably a cell phone in poor lighting. I can't tell what color Jahno is, but I'm guessing fawn or blue.

I doctored the photos up as much as I could.

All About Jahno

Jahno is a purebred Thai Ridgeback and needs a special home! Jahno is 5-6 years old. He is devoted to his family and fiercely protective of them. He acts like a cuddly pup to those he loves but does not want strangers touching him. While he regularly attends the dog park and lives with other male dogs he needs to be introduced slowly. He is a dominate dog with humans and can only go to a special home. No Kids, no cats! No exceptions. Thai Ridgebacks are primitive dogs and are loyal but fierce. You must research this breed. Jahno is housebroken ,uses a doggie door and loves car rides. He has basic obedience training but it must be firmly reinforced or he will ignore you. This rare breed is magnificent in the right home and a disaster waiting to happen in the wrong home. No adoption fee- personal training required and you must line up a personal trainer who can meet with Jahno to hand him over to new owner. If you are seriously interested in taking on this dog please contact us for more information. Needs a home by September. Adoption fee: $250.00
PLEASE COMPLETE OUR
ON-LINE ADOPTION APPLICATION AT WWW.COMPASSIONEDRESCUE.ORG AND
FOLLOW LINKS TO "ADOPTION APPLICATION"
All animals are vet checked, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and have all health concerns addressed before being adopted. All adoption fees and monetary donations go EXCLUSIVELY to our vet fund for medical expenses. All other expenses are absorbed by volunteers and product donations.
We appreciate your support!

I have the Fairtex line... and yes Maureen Pinto's line (now owned by Andrea & Brian Borg), Rose has Alex who's mom was FX Look Nook (same mother as my three keepers) Bellehound's Heaven on Earth "Sylvia"; Bellehound's Jing Reet "Cricket" and Bellehound's Kaang Kao "Batman"

It was the first line breeding that I know of in the USA (course I could be wrong) as there is very little data to be found.

I have all of the data that TRCUS kept, but again there was very little information.

I know that Maureen Pinto now breeds and shows Dogo's under the Fairtex Kennel name (she showed and bred both Thai Ridgebacks and Dogos, but got out of the Thai Ridgebacks about four years ago, and sold all of her stock to the Borgs who now reside in Riverside, CA.

The Borgs still own Boon of Thai Silk (Bulls daughter) and FX/Yesiam SumYunGuy (Alex's daddy).

Last information I had on how to get in touch w/Maureen Pinto was this:
Fairtex Kennels. Producing Quality Dogo Argentinos for more than 10 years, including three world championships. Our goal is to produce puppies that are sound in mind and body. For information, please contact, Maureen Pinto: Florida (727) 856-5321. [email protected]

Here's Maureen showing one of her Dogos at last years Dogo National

All nice pics!

Typically it's about a month to see misbehavior. Just like kids in new settings, dogs tend to play it low key until they get lay of land.

Having said that...I tend not to believe people about reasons for give up of dog. I have seen give ups coming into shelter with various behavior issues reported and we just don't see the behavior...ever.

There was an Australian Shepard/Akita mix that came into the shelter years ago. It went out on a trial adoption and was returned after a couple of days with the report of "not good with children". My brother had been looking for a dog that would get BIG so I called him when the dog was returned. Brother ended up with him. Later that summer I brought a big (3 ft long) rawhide bone for the dog and we sat outside while he chewed on it. There were about 10 young kids out that day (under 8). Since he was so big the smaller kids were used to riding him like a hobby horse...so...here he was laying on his stomach chewing on his bone with kids climbing all over him...sometimes trying to get him to ride them around (telling him to "Go Hobbit Go!", patting him on his head...playing with his bone...I even saw one kid, as he was tumbling onto his diapered bottom, grab an ear. Hobbit just layed there carefully (to make sure he missed small hands) chewing on his bone. Hobbit never did have any conflict with children (of course, the kitchen drapes were another matter). So sometimes you just cannot tell what will happen. It's possible that in that woman's home he wasn't good with children...though I suspect that if that was truely the case it was more a reflection on her leadership ability than qualities of the dog.

Cheri:

I agree with you on the time, when rescue dogs begin to show their true colors... I also agree with people and their mislabeling of why the dog was turned in.

I rescued a Basenji several years ago, that was deemed a biter of men. Well, with good reason actually. The man in the story was the step father of the kids and when he (was known to be abusive) went after one of the children Jessie stepped in the way and snarled (ever heard a basenji snarl and it will scare even the most dominant person)... ask Rose, she's heard my kids go at it several times...

Well let's just say that Jessie is still living with her "adoptive" family she's great w/kids, other dogs, and loves my friends husband....

However, it is also a good thing to have some sort of back ground on a dog, like if it's bitten (caused medical care) in the past.

I wish the best for this dog, but I don't have room and I don't see anyone else stepping forward to "foster" Jahno until he's adopted by an educated person.

Years ago there was a kennel in FL who was breeding TRD and some other breeds which were AKC. I do not rmember all the details but the "breeders" ended up banned or suspended from the AKC and the "operation" was closed down. I am unsure why I remember this, given the topic of the thread, but I think it is related somehow.
It was a very bad situation as I recall.
By the way, this is the firt time I have seen the boards in a awhile, I have been at work and also working on several rescue operations (mass neglect and cruelty) so things have been busy. thankfully no TRD......yet.

If my memory serves me right Capponetta (sp?) was once involved w/we all know who. Then he (John) almost killed the old dog (named after a river in Thailand), and hence they parted ways... then the wars started (we've all been there).

Then Capponetta and his wife (who also had several other breeds including small furry dogs, Cane Corsos and so on) as well as the Thai Ridgebacks became members or founding members of TRCUS (Thai Ridgeback Club of the United States... some how things went south (for reasons that escape my mind), Capponetta's kennel was raided by the USDAA, the Dade County SPCA etc... and hence all of this dogs were taken away and there was some legal actions against them as well. Started because someone was sold a pet that was in very poor health (can't remember the breed).

I'm sure at one time Capponetta (although I cannot say for sure) may have been a good breeder, and then money became the object of desire...but then we've seen others follow that same path.... some just move out away to avoid prosecution.

Genes + environment = temperament

Please remember this, if you don't remember anything else: Once a dog has reached dominant status, punishment cannot be used to correct a dominant aggressive dog!

The trainer may make the dog revert to a submissive-aggressive or defensive-aggressive animal, and the dog may respond to that person out of fear, but it will never be trustworthy around others, even family members. The most that may be accomplished is to reduce the frequency and severity of the aggressive acts.

With biting dogs, humane euthanasia is often the kindest form of treatment. Biting animals often go from home to home and lead a life of fear and severe, inhumane punishment.

This is so sad.... I just don't see anyone adopting this poor guy... and I sure don't have room.....

And let the truth be told about the personality... I think it's good that rescues are now putting some of the behavioral traits of the Thai Ridgebacks behavior on their websites...

A five/six year old dog regardless of breed already has a hard time getting adopted, let this be known that Thai Ridgebacks are even harder to place.

There used to be a breeder in WA state named Ed Black he had the Thai Ridgebacks back in the earlier days... you know when they first hit the country....

And for the information on Capponetto, here's their new "website" apparently they just moved and now have more dogs... OH JOY!

Let us not forget that Capponetto also was a founding member/creator of the Continental Kennel Club (CKC) www.continentalkennel.org/

I wonder how they're still allowed to own and show dogs... guess they weren't ordered to never own dogs again.... were the charges even true? or was that just a sterling story as well?

I was never able to find any court information on cruelty on either Debbie or John from the DADE County Prosecutors Office.

Thankfully that other one has now been officially charged!

Thanks for the update on Jahno Ann

Jahno the Thai Ridgeback from Washington State is still looking for his forever home; if you have any questions please contact Erin Walker or you can email me at the email address below.

I know that thanks to "some" breeders (you know who you are) that the market is more than flooded at this time; but if you want to dip your toes into the breed, and can't afford the shipping of that "free" trd from Thailand, might you consider giving a rescue in the United States a loving forever home.

I have two rescued Thai Ridgebacks who are permenant residents at my home. Bruiser who is my Service Dog (and a first for his breed in the US and the World); Raba the famous prodigy from Cesar Millan.

I've also had the pleasure of re-homing other Thai Ridgebacks who are the love of their owners life; so you know not all rescues have "issues" most rescues find their ways to shelters because their owner didn't do their homework.

Cathleen,

Erin Walker is currently fostering Jahno. I am going to ask her to give you an update. I do know that she is over run with dogs, like all rescue people, and would be more than happy for any help on placement.

Take care,

This is Erin's update on Jahno:

Hi Cathleen,
Jahno is doing okay. He is such a tough dog! He is a lot better than
when he was returned a few months ago. He is on Melatonin at night and
Fluoxetine. That seems to help him sleep through the night plus we never
crate him anymore.
He has _mild_ separation anxiety (hates being crated but does okay baby
gated away from windows). He will bark and cry when I leave and when I
return. He will look out the windows and bark at squirrels, cats and
neighbors if left totally loose. He has never jumped on the windows or
attempted to scratch at them but I would not trust him.
He will tear at a fence to fence-fight our neighbors dog and will bark
at our neighbor through then fence when he plays with his dog. He loves
freedom but our wood fence is all clawed up and I think if we left him
long enough he would go through it to get their dogs or cat.
I think chain link would be better but then he would see everything
(squirrels, cats etc) and bark more. He has chipped his teeth on the
fencing and kennel and recently broke a toe and hurt his leg.
He will kill squirrels, cats etc. He is mostly okay with dogs- even
furry ones that look like prey. He is actually better with them when in
the yard and I or my husband are not around the immediate area. He is
worse when he wants attention and he has to wear a box muzzle in close
quarters.
He has not been in a serious fight but he can be "bitchy". He is better
if he wants something- like he wants on the dog bed but another dog is
there he can be nice but if vice versa he is bitchy.
He really likes people and likes to be near us- especially my husband
who is very attached to him.
He tried to bite everyone at our vet when he recently broke his toe
(trying to break out of a kennel) and they could not have handled him if
he wasn't already muzzled. He has never tried to bite me- even when his
toe was bleeding and swollen like crazy. He did growl at my husband if
he got near his toe but would bug him to pet his head and scratch him etc.
I really don't know if there is anyone out there for this dog. I would
like your opinion but I think I can already guess it..... I know he is a
huge liability for many reasons. Just when we are ready to give up he
does something wonderful and we think maybe he will get better.
This morning he was laying on the couch touching my male Rhodesian
Ridgeback and Dachshunds and looking adorable until my RR moved and
Jahno started growling at him and would have snapped at him if he wasn't
wearing the muzzle. He is too needy to be a kennel dog and too bitchy to
be a house dog with other animals. Are there any alternatives to
euthanizing him?

And here is my reply to her email:

Erin:

I know what you're going through... I had two of my own Thai Ridgebacks on Clomapramine (a mood stabalizer drug) for a couple of months and now they're totally off of it. It really helped as I was at my witts end w/my two.

Mooshu was such a horrible escape artist, mangaged to get out of every immaginable enclosure, including a steel dog kennel (like the ones they transport bears in). W/TONS of exercise she's gotten much, much better; and now when I leave the house I don't have to worry that she's gonna escape, kill a Basenji (who she hates when I'm home, but when I'm not, they get along charmingly, totally Bizarre!, but it's that jealousy issue that all primitive dogs seem to have), or dive out a window after someone.

I got back one of my pups from a litter last year, and I had to put him on it also, he had bullied his owner, and her other Thai Ridgeback to where no one wanted to watch him when she had to leave town for work (I doubt that she's going to come back for him, since he's been here since October, but that is ok, she did what I asked of her); I know that her other Thai Ridgeback Kiyo (who was a rescue she adopted from me), had gone through a bit of the separation anxiety issue, he actually jumped out of a second story window (he's doing much better on doggy prozac); that didn't help Piglet; and honestly it was cheaper to have Mooshu and Piglet on the same meds (I checked w/my Vet prior to switching him).

Both dogs are doing well now; provided that they get plenty of exercise. Each of them are different. I have eight of them (four of whom I bred, I lost their mother to the tainted dog food recall last year, when they were all 8 weeks old). I have three (a male and two females) that get along w/most everyone, and love to be in their crates. Piglet and Mooshu have gotten better. Mulan (Mooshu's sister), loves being in her airline kennel but hated being in a six foot by six foot chainlink kennel; and Raba (who's a half brother of Piglet) loves to return to his kennel (he now has the steel kennel), in the garage.... He's also great w/other dogs, even males; he's the prodigy from Cesar Millan (the dog wisperer). Raba was a red-zone biter; not totally rehabilitated, because he'd still eat a child if he had the chance I believe...lol...

And then there is Bruiser (my first Thai Ridgeback) a rescue from a rurual shelter and he's my Service Dog; he goes w/me every where... so it's a crap shoot really. Mooshu is good about doing Service Work too; she's great in a resturaunt, sleeps under the table. She might be able to work into Bruiser's place when he decides to retire... or my other female Sylvia who's just like her Mom (who passed away) in personality... sweet as the day is long. They're so, very, very different it makes listing them almost impossible.

He must not be all bad, as he did wear those costumes, and well, I don't know if any of mine would...lol... well maybe Bruiser, as he can wear princess crowns... (see photos of him attending a tea party w/my great niece).

If you could just find a home for him where he would be the only dog, he might succeed. I really feel for him; and if I was overloaded I would take him; I just don't have any room. Jack Sterling and his irresponsible breeders have flooded the market, and sterlings giving away "free" Thai Ridgebacks from Thailand minus the shipping (so they're really not free).

I do have Jahno posted on my petfinder website as a curtesy posting. I think you're doing a good job, and if he has to wear a muzzle to keep others safe, then that's what has to be done.

I understand the liability issue, but if he hasn't bitten any people (that you know of) and caused significant damage; then I would say keep working w/him. I'm sorry I can't be of much more help. I'll do all I can to help find this guy a loving forever home w/someone who knows and understands the breed.

They remind me a lot in temperament/personality of wolf hybrids... if you get a chance to read about them.

If you can think of anything else, or need tips; please do not hesitate to contact me.

Cathy

Give Jahno a butt scratch for me.

Any of you want to jump in? I don't know what else I can tell her, and well, sometimes things that are thought out, are better.

Thanks
