Dear Rose, You say you have your own bedroom where Dean IS NOT allowed on the bed, only the canines in the family!!! LOL :} I didn't see any room for you? Is this Dean's technique for Guard Dog Duty - night shift? If they sleep all day, they can patrol ALL NIGHT ;{ TRD's grow into sleep. Ginger gets up with Frank at 4:15 A.M. so for me she awakens at 10:30 A.M.! Never seen such a lazy dog. Jo-Ann |

yes, you can, but remember´its special for you.. Just adress them to Tina Nordin, wowwadee TRD.
The pictures are from Thailand. Not my dogs, I live in Sweden. Its very interesting though; An ´"simple" dermoid op is about 1000 US dollars in Sweden,(plus eventually drain and an re-op--it will make the price arise to around 3000 US dollars!!)) -- in Thailand price start from 5 US dollars only!!! Me and my friend where happy (its hard for the farmers to afford an DS op) to pay for the op of 5 dogs for making the pictures. 5 DS and one hernia. It made me happy that I could help the Thai.-breeders. Please send us the link after you have posted the pictures.
(incase we got dogs in need of an DS op, I feel its better to send for an Thai vet (perhaps my friend Arm? ) or I can do it myself after the lesson in Thaiand, ;-)) Sweden vets is very inexeperienced, and the breeders themselfs use to tell the vets the diagnose and what to do! ;-( As you can see in the pictures the vet makes an round hole (important, never remove 2 dermoids in one incision). and he remove whole the dermoid, the hair in the end is the proof about its totally removed. (8 weeks old puppies). Regards Tina Nordin, Gothenburg, Sweden. [email protected] |

Those are incredible pictures. Thank you for
taking the time. Is there a place I can learn about DSC -
like is it hereditary? what causes it? etc. is it coulour specific.
I am sure this is old for all of you but as a learner this is new. Thanks
again

Hi Teri,
The DSC, or Dermoid Sinus Cyst is a condition prevalent in Ridgeback breeds.. It is a sinus cyst that is present at birth and forms in the fetal stage of development. The pup either has it , or it don't.
it is a congenital defect, that can be surgically removed and the pup can have a normal life...Dependant upon its severity, a dog can go through life and never suffer any ill effects of it, or it can cause complications, get infected, and even enter the spinal column.
It is most often found in the neck, or at the base of the tail... usually just 1, but there are instances when 1 dog can have 2 or more.
These pups are considered as pets only, but in instances, dogs with the condition have been used, if their quality was high, as the cyst is not really considered a big deal..Particularly in Thailand, where the cost to remove is basically nothing..
If you look to the left of the homepage of this site, you will see a library.. It has many different articles, history of the breed, breed characteristics and so on.. there is also a link for the dermoid if you scroll down..
I also recommend you read the the "library" link located there as well..it is all about the breed and its beginnings... |

Thank you James for the explanation.
I know they have bred for DS free dogs in the RR breed in Sweden since about 20 years, and have lowered it to about 12%. (but who knows if the breeders "hide" the problem, same time as the sk "ridgeless" dogs is a shame in the breed.)
Some people say the ridge gene and the DS gene are connected.

Tina !! what in the average size of litter in RR ? one DS from litter of 10 equal 10 % one DS from litter of 8 equal 12 % one DS from litter of 7 equal 14 % and so on...... Is that mean one DS pup in one litter is normal.....???? You may got 2 if it was from tighly line breeding.... I don't see any improvement..... . |

haha, you are so very correct. Its not an improvement at all.
They call it lower.....but 12% is rather high and an bad result in so many years. Remark; this is the statistics they show, NOT the reality. (culling puppies etc)
Nicollette Hillbertz says; with the heridity of the DS, it would be normal with 25-30% DS in the litters. Even if we breed to ridgeless dogs, it will take 4-500 years to get rid of the DS in the Ridgeback!
=Some of her collegues says the ridge and the sinus is the same thing, It comes together. (very bad news, because the ridge can be evaluated as an "disease" and ridged (i.e sick) dogs will not be allowed to be bred in EU..).

Tina !! Why fool the public with statistic............? statistic is just a guide line for study, why hide ? They only need improve the size of the litter then DC percentage will autimatically down to below 10, no need to hide... |
