Just want your input.

Is it "very natural" for an TRD to be aware of their paws???

My dogs would ran away if they could. lol.

I just cut a few nails ever moment to make them feel secure, and more confortable til they get used to it.

(I got the picture of Yod in my mind, when Im thinking about TRDs cutting nails. The cool dog lying on the side, his blue tongue out, relaxed, and Serge and his kennelboy cutting.;-))
By the way, its interesting to view Serges bodylanguage, it reminds me on Ceasar Millan, Respect!
;-)

Of course it is "natural" for them to guard their paws. They are diggers, climbers, and runners - traction needed for speed, grip, and deep digging.

all dogs are aware of their paws,

this is to be instilled young and must be done through  consistent handling, reward and making it fun and peaceful for them..Just like it  is not really natural for canaines to want to be handled...this is something you do young as well...

These are natural tendencies of canines in general.

I remember when my pups were about 3 weeks old or so and even younger, some of the pups would scream bloody murder when you tried to pick them up...

This is fear of danger and handling

It took me four years to realize that its easier to cut Meeko's toe nails when he is up, alert and standing.  For four years I have always cut his nails in the evening when he is lying down resting.  My theory was that I would cut his nails when he is relaxed and tired, therefore he would submit more easily and just let it happen.  But, this has always turned out to be a battle of the wills.  He'd mouth my hands and growl with much protest, no matter how many treats I'd accompany the ritual with.  However, by the time I got to the third paw, he would eventually submit (although not entirely).

Recently, I have been attempting to cut his nails during the day, doing it when he was just standing around in the kitchen or outside.  There is definitely a big difference!  He just stands there an accepts it with very little protest and waits for me to finish.  No mouthing, no whining, and no growling.  I have done this for the past few weeks - so far so good.

I guess this makes a lot of sense, I don't think I would want someone cutting my nails when I am tired and trying to rest/sleep.

Seems that I have to cut his nails every week b/c they grow so damn fast.
Does everyone else cut their TRD's nails this often?

Brian, how often I have to cut the nails differs from how tight paws the dog got...
tight paws and running on hard ground =less cutting.

For me it works to cut them, while dog standing in the shower and the water on, makes them in submissive mood..;-) Tina

Cutting Nails in the shower what a great idea. That would work they are in a state of mind at that point to allow it easier and filter out the paw handling if that is a problem I am going to try it. Thanks for the tip.

You guys who have dogs that enjoy being in the shower are lucky... all of mine hate the water... well, now, that really depends on hot days, if they get in their kiddy pools, or I fill up the holes that they dug (mud baths really keep the flies and bugs off them), they learned this from the Basenjis although they roll in the dust, God forbid you get any water hear them, unless they're drinking it...lol...

Cutting nails when they are wet is much easier as they're softer, and the clippers tend to not make as much noise.

Mooshu, I have to cut her nails when she's laying on her back.

Mulan, takes care of her own, by chewing them off...lol...

Raba, stands like horse being shod (and it doesn't matter where we are).

Sylvia, lays down and chews on a toy while I cut hers.

Cricket, if you can get her to land is pretty good, but getting her to land is hard.

Piglet, his are pretty short, he too chews them, & great show length too (shame he's neutered)!

Bruiser, he's the toughest, but I believe that's because he's had foot surgery on both of his front feet, for those cysts that can sometimes get infected when the ground stays wet for too long (like we're having now), but he's pretty good.... he also has those dreaded rear dews... but, he would rather have me dremmel them, than cut them, but when I sit to do nails, I like to do as many at a time as I can... and well the dremmel scares the hell out of everyone else....lol...

Nala, the street dog from Thailand, keeps hers pretty short, but, when I do need to cut them she's pretty good, as she knows she'll get a treat afterwards.

Out of all of the dogs then best is Savannah my Grand Blue de Gascon (I keep hers very short), Nala the Basenji (yes I have two Nala's) is very good too, because they're nice and short quicks.

The worst are Mr. Bojangles my Jack Russell Terrier, he looses more hair, and puts up the biggest fight (and I've never quicked him), he usually has to be taken to the vet, knocked out, muzzled and then have them done; he will let my groomer do them, but he's a bit of a womanizer...lol...

By far Buford the Bloodhound is the worst... his nails are huge, thick, and grow like a sloths...If I take him to the vet for his yearly boosters it takes me, the Vet and two techs to hold him while one cuts.... same goes if I take him to the groomer.  Last time I did them by myself... and I had to put my leg across his neck like a horse, and muzzle him.  I never, ever quicked him... he just doesn't like his feet being messed with.  Man do I really miss having a concrete patio, or pavement... gravel just doesn't help keep the nails short.

Nooky was easy too, her nails grew really quick too, and when she came to me they were so long... I swear she could have hung upside down from a tree like a sloth had she wanted too.... As long as she was sunbathing, you could do just about anything to her...

All of my Basenjis are easy because they have white nails, and they like to sit on your lap like a baby, plus they were all shown extensively, so they got used to it at a very, very early age (three weeks or earlier depending upon their length)... They are wonderful to allow me to cut their nails provided there are no other Basenjis in the room (as they like to catch the cut toe nails and eat them), because when they're held they feel like they're prey, and one Basenji will usually grab the one being held by the foot or something.

Kelley  was the best to have her nails done, but I used to take her to the groomers alot when I was working, and she got used to being pampered every three months (unless she got really stinky before that) and the groomers trimming them ... Then I learned how to cut them (she was my first dog), and it was easy, plus she had clear nails!

I have no problem with cutting  my dog nails, I also can trim them except Mangkorn a great jumper and NaemChock with biten history...

The best way I found is put them up on a grooming table, and pull back their pastern for cutting nail, like how we put spurs on the horse hools
