Interesting Exercise, if anyone wants to take part. List what you think are the 3 Best Characteristics of the breed and the 3 Things that are weakest things that need improvement. Persons/personalities/breeding ethics do NOT count! While they can and do impact the breed, this exercise is about the breed alone.
Here are my thoughts:

Top 3:
1. Uniqueness (there really is not another breed like this)
2. Coat/Color/Maintenance (beautiful animal who is so remarkably easy to keep clean - on all levels)
3. Intelligence and Loyalty

Bottom 3:
1. lack of uniform type
2. variance of temperaments
3. health problems (DS, skin conditions, HD)

Good topic... and a toughie too!

BEST
  1. Intelligence (job duties are endless)
  2. Loyalty and Devotion to their owner
  3. Elaborate ridges & coat texture/color

WORST

  1. Temperaments (inability to get along with other dogs even their own kind)
  2. Inability to keep them contained.
  3. Health Issues (DS/C, and those we don't know about because no one's kept records).

It makes me wonder a bit to see that DS is mentioned more than once as one of the buttom 3 sides to the TRD... We should feel blessed that the DS outcome normally is below or around 25% - It can be spotted right away and after surgery the pups can look forward to a long healthy life.

On the opposite dogs with severe DS its not discovered till later and the prognose of a good dog life can be very slim as there is no cure as such to make them 100% healthy again.

Or dogs with eyeproblems that go blind at a relatively young age ...

All in all i think DS is a problem YES!! no doubt about it but not really an issue that ill list as a problem to the breed.

My opinion on best and worst features:

Best:
Adaptability
Size
"Primitive dog" Behavior

Worst:
Agression /territorial instinct
Speed
Extremely well developed doglanguage. (Most other breeds are way rougher in their language and may provoke a situation without intending to, and thereby trigger agression)

Sorry i misread the starting post ...

Yes i can only agree then that if you are able to work on cutting back the number of DS pro litter that would be great - I dunno what other breeders do but i plan to fit in a pasus in my sales contract on eventual DS Ridgeless pups, that they should be neutered/speyed  before they get 1 year old - to avoid .. Ooops litters with DS parents.

Regarding the extremely well developed dog language (Is that the right word??) I do not believe we should try to work on killing that in breeding, i also think thats one of their finest assets - Im  merely stating that it may be the reason for their aggression towards other dogs..
