Hi to all, Qdira came on heat about four days before turning six months. Our vet is quite surpirsed and so are we. Is this normal for a Thai Ridgeback? She is now into her seventh day and fortunately BuaThong is not showing any interest in her at all. She goes to the kennels on Monday or before if anything changes. We have booked her in for a week but can extend but would like to know if this would be long enough? She will be in the kennels from her 9th till her 16th day and it is going to be very hard to be parted from her but there is no other way to keep her and BuaThong seperate. Regards Gail |

It is odd Gail they ussually have their first aorund 8 months old.. that period is not long enough..They like to mate around the 16 th day and is usuall their prime time. Their heats can go for 30 days and late matings of around 21-23 days are common. My blue female mates and is fertile around days 19- 23 My red girl will mate usually aorund days 10- 16.... I wouold talk to the breeder of your female and get an idea of when her mother usualy mates, but either way,, better start keeeping them apart now. |

hi Gail, my bitches have come to first heat between 6th to 8th months of age. Second period can be from 6-10(12) months later. Some of them will only have heats in fall, and some twice time a year, spring and fall. You need to separate them longer time. At least until day 20, notice her behaviour! Females use to refuse the males after the best date, even if the studs are interested. My experience says the best day to mate is day 16, but my siblings tried to mate day 9!!! :-) Be careful when its her first period, she is too young to mate.
Cleo just had her second heat, 10 months after her first period (17 months old ). Her littermate had her second heat in november!
Our club recommend us to wait with mating until they are at least 2 years old. Recommendation, not rule! Tina

Thanks so much it looks like she will have to be in the kennel a little longer then. Shall we watch her and only send her when BuaThong starts showing interest in her. At the moment the only interest he has in her is playing together. |

The playing may be part of their courting, which they go through until the time is right..all it takes is a minute and you can end up with tie before you realize. I would only allow them together supervised, otheriwse confine them to seperate areas. I wouldnt allow them to run freely together outside, where they may take off somewhere on you to find their lovenest |
