I dont see anyone single characteristic (of course we cant forget the ridge!) as being most important in distinguishing the Thai Ridgeback. I think it is the entire form as a whole that makes it distinct even without the ridge.
In regard to all the proposed outcrosses: in every population their is always variation. from this variation we can artificially select to accentuate specific characteristics. so we see that an outcross to another breed is not necessary in order to improve or change a characteristic such as the angles(?) in the modern Thai Ridgeback. im not clear as to what angles we are speaking of but as an example - if more bend of stifle was desired we would first select from available Thai Ridgeback for more bend of stifle, there would be no need to cross to another breed to get this characteristic or any other. Look at what they did to the show German Shepherd's angles - no outcross necessary they just kept selecting for more angle until they created todays crippled show GSD. these show GSD's were once the same as the working lines but through selection, not outcrosses to other breeds, they are now noteably very different. not sure about the Ovtcharka colors. they seem to come in a variety of colors most often with white. The standard Thai Ridgeback colors are all solid and i dont see any similarities with Ovtcharka.
