6. Copper red Ridgeback dogs.

These are the hybrids resulting from red and black breeding. They are beautiful by their own right. The rarest ones to be found are copper red with short, fine and velvet-like hair. The complete copper red color is rare. Usually there would be some piebald on the legs, tail and chest.

7. Kleeb-Bua Ridgeback dogs.

These are hybrids from the blue-gray and red Ridgeback dogs. This family includes yellow kleeb-bauo color, rotten kleeb-buao color, gray-tone kleeb-buao color, pink kleeb-bua color and ka-pi (shrimp paste) color.

8. SUPER RED (Tamarind seed-like) Ridgeback dogs.

This color is 80% black with inserted reds in it. It appears to look black-red, like the color of tamarind seed. It is one of the most rare and considered to be one of the most beautiful of colors as well.

9. Brindle Ridgeback dogs.

These are the hybrids resulting from mating of the red Ridgeback dog and the brindle-like Thai dogs. Their bloodlines are unstable. The brindle-like pattern on each dog can be very different. Some are a leopard pattern. Some have stripes across or along the body. Some even have a fish bone pattern along the back. The brindle striped Ridgeback dogs can have short hair, fine short hair and velvet-like hair.

The “Ridge�?of the Thai Ridgeback Dogs

One distinctive characteristic that differentiates the Thai Ridgeback dogs from other Thai dogs is the line of hair running along the backbone in various sizes and patterns. It is better known as “the ridge�?in English. The "ridge" is the line of hair that runs in the opposite direction of the rest of the hair on the body, usually starting from the front shoulders and down to the hip bones. A swirl of hair, which is called a “crown�?in English, is also one part of the ridge in some patterns. It is not necessary for a ridge to contain “crowns�? The important thing is that crown on the ridge should be the same color as the rest of the body. If there are many crowns on the ridge, the ridge should be larger than usual.

In the past, the Thai Ridgeback Dog was called simply “Mah Thai Lung Ahn �?

The kinds of ridges in the TRD.

Appearance of crowns

1. Ridges with crowns include the Violin ridge, Pin ridge, Bai Pho ridge, Bowling pin ridge, Thanu ridge, Hu-kra-tai ridge, Neck-tie ridge, etc.

2. Ridges without crowns include the Khem ridges, Phaen ridges, Thep-pa-nom ridges, etc.

Size of ridges.

1. Smaller sized ridges include the Khem ridges, Tha-nu ridges, Thep-pa-nom ridges, Bowling pin ridges, Hu-kra-tai ridges, etc.

2. Larger type ridges include the Phaen ridges, Violin ridges, Bai-pho ridges, etc.

Descriptions of all the "RIDGES" of the TRD

1.Kaem ridge is a ridge without crowns. It is just a line of hair running in the opposite direction of the rest of the hair on the body, in a needle-shape, from the front shoulders to the buttocks. The normal size is 2-2.5 cm wide. This kind of ridge is very common.

2.Phaen ridge is another ridge without crowns. The pattern is the same as Kaem ridge but Phaen ridge is larger in size and is 4-5 cm wide. It is a ridge that is uncommon and rarely found.

3.Thep-pa-nom ridge or Pa-nom or Prom ridge is also a ridge without crowns. The hair of this ridge does not run in the opposite direction of the rest of the hair like Keam or Phaen ridges. But the hair on the left and right side of the backbone would raise and meet each other in the middle. It forms a pattern that looks like two hands praying. This action is called “wai�?in Thai. It is when you put your two hands together on the chest level in order to greet other people. This ridge can be most often found in dogs with long hair.

4.Tha-nu ridge or Look-sorn ridge is a ridge with a crown. It starts with two crowns on each front shoulder, swirls and meets each other, then runs along the backbone in the shape of an arrow. This kind of ridge is easy to be seen. If you mate the Thanu ridgeback dog with another type of ridge, the results may be puppies with larger type ridges.

5.Pin ridge is a ridge with many crowns. It starts with a crown on the front shoulders, which may possess more than one on each side. They swirl and meet each other then continues down the backbone. There will also be two crowns on either side of the middle of the back. This causes a larger patch of hair growing in the opposite direction. There are two crowns in the middle of the back, one on each side, which causes the big piece of hair running in the opposite direction on the back. It will then taper down to a fine point by the croup. This ridge is also called the “Lute Ridge�?

6.Bai-pho or Ma ridges is of the same pattern as a Pin ridge. The difference is this ridge will have a much larger shape and patch of hair growing opposite to the rest. This type of ridge may grow down the flanks of the body. It resembles the shape of the Bho-Di leaf or a saddle. It is a very rare type of ridge pattern.

7.Violin ridge is formed by three pairs of crowns located in the different parts of the back. The first pair of crowns is located at the front shoulders. The second one is further down towards the middle of the back. There is one crown on the right and one on the left side of the back. The third pair of crowns are small and form the shape of a violin, then taper down towards the croup. Violin ridges are strange looking and very seldom found.

8.Hu-kra-tai Ridge is formed by two distinctive oval shaped patched growing on both sides of the backbone. It forms a pattern resembling a “sitting rabbit�?with it’s ears spread. The Hu-kra-tai ridge is also very rarely found.

9.Bowling Pin ridge is formed by crowns located along the back bone which looks like a bowling pin. It does not need to have a crown located at the front of the shoulders. There are two crowns located closely on the middle of the back. There are two more crowns at the back of the shoulders with a wider distance between them. These patterns form the shape of a “bowling pin.�?/SPAN>

Besides the mentioned ridges, there are many more ridge patterns. They are named by what they resemble. Some other types are the Necktie ridge, Dam-pai ridge (a paddle-shape), Hang-mang-da ridge (a shape of a horse-shoe tail), etc.

The undesirable traits of the Thai Ridgeback dog.

A dog that looks shorter and has long torso.
A dog with floppy ears.
A dog with bushy tail
A dog with a curved tail.
A dog with a crooked tail.
A dog whose piebald color is more than 10% of the color of the whole body, except the brindle dogs.
A dog whose hair is longer than 2.5 cm.
A dog whose back is too arched, except the arched back in the bitch.

General temperament of the Thai Ridgeback dogs.

Honest and royal to their owner.
Brave and fierce.
Friendly with those it knows, but distrusting and aloof to strangers
Hardworking, strong and absolutely brisk.
Smarter than any other domesticated dogs, with special instincts which make them easy to be tamed. Being an individual. Clean. For example, they are able to clean themselves by licking the hair. They do not like to evacuate near the resident area. Easy-going, not complicated. Has strong sense of smell and hearing. They do not like to be over-forced.
