The dietary needs of a dog

Food is necessary for a dog. In order to support your dog to fully grow and maintain the body, you should provide them good food with high nutrition. There are five important nutrients for a dog.

1. Protein from meat, eggs, milk and beans.
2. Carbohydrates from rice, sugar and flour.
3. Minerals.
4. Fat from animal fat, pork, beans, milk and coconut.
5. Vitamins, such as vitamin B complex, A, D, E and K.

There are two kinds of dog foods.

1. Commercial dog food can be found on the supermarket shelves, sold in cans or packets. The price is often high but it provides convenience in feeding a dog. This kind of food should be kept in a dry, as if it gets moist, it can grow bacteria and cause health problems in a puppy.

2. Home cooked food is made from fresh food that can be bought from local fresh markets like fish, meat, chicken, and boiled with rice. You may also feed the dogs leftovers from your own meals. This is highly nutritious for a dog and is less expensive than commercial dog food..

Feeding

The puppies will nurse from their mother their first 3-4 weeks of their life. After this you may start to wean them from her by giving small amounts of rice, beef and eggs, or a highly nutritious commercial food that is softened with warm water and made into a mush, 3 times a day.
It is also important to supplement the pups diet with vitamins, such as vitamins C, D, E and K. Separate the pups from each other and other adult dogs. They should be fed 3 times a day until about 3- 4 months old. After they are this age, you may then feed them twice a day and always offer supplemental vitamins and minerals as listed. It is helpful to feed a bitch many vegetables starting 15 days prior to mating. This will give her additional vitamin K.

Health care
Most disorders can be avoided if the dog has the appropriate vaccinations. Antibiotics are normally used to cure or heal most afflictions depending on the symptoms.

Common Canine disease and disorders

Vital disorders.

1. Rabies is a very harmful and contagious disease caused by a virus and is transmitted by the saliva of a sick dog. It is transmittable to man and other animals through open wounds or by a bite from the afflicted animal.
Symptoms: The dog will behave strangely, become agitated, fierce and isolate itself. If the dog does not get treatment on time, it will become paralyzed and die.
Prevention and treatment: A dog should be vaccinated against the disease for the first time at the age of four months and should receive boosters annually.

2. Parvo Virus is also a harmful and contagious disease, especially for puppies younger than 6 months of age. If the puppies do not get treatment on time, they will usually die.
Symptoms: The puppy will vomit and produce profuse diarrhea with some blood and a very foul smell. The puppy will dehydrate and die within 24 hours if not treated on time.
Prevention: At the ages of 6-8 weeks old, the puppy should receive its first vaccination against this disease and receive 2 more successive shots every two weeks until complete. They should also receive boosters annually to maintain resistance to it.

3. Canine Distemper is another harmful and contagious disease.

Symptoms: The dog will have high temperatures accompanied by pneumonia, diarrhea, and vomiting. If the virus gets into the dog’s brain and spine, it will cause neurotic symptoms such as twitches, stagger, weakness and paralysis resulting in death.
Prevention and treatment: A puppy should have vaccinations against this disease when it is 6-12 weeks old and receive boosters annually.

4. Hepatitis is a highly contagious disease transmitted between dogs of any age. puppies. The disease can be spread through infected food and from the feces of an infected dog.
Symptoms: Regular vomit, dark stinky feces, yellow skin caused by the expansion of the lymph nodes. If not treated on time, the dog will die a bad death accompanied with convulsions.

5. Para influenza is usually found in puppies showing the symptoms in its respiratory system.

Bacterial infections:

1. Leptospirosis can be transmitted to man.

Symptoms: High temperatures, vomiting with thirst, very yellow urine, diarrhea with dark feces, nausea.
Prevention: Vaccinations.

2. Haemobatonella fetes is a corpuscle disease. It is a result of bacteria from tics, fleas etc.

Symptom: Loss of appetite, low salt level in blood, loss of weight, pale blood discharging from the nose.
Prevention and treatment: Place anti tic treatments on the pups and dogs, keep all bedding and sleeping quarters free of tics. Bring afflicted dog to the vet immediately.

Parasites

There are two kinds of parasites; ectoparasites and endoparasites.

Endoparasites are those in which live inside the dog.

  • 1. Hookworms can be found in dogs at any age. They suck blood and live in the intestines, which causes the dog to have bloody diarrhea and anemia.
  • 2. Roundworms feed on digesting food in the dog’s gut, which makes the dog appear thin with a full belly and watery eyes.
  • 3. Tapeworms. Their segments can be found in the dog’s feces or on the hair around the dog’s anus. They feed and live in the dog’s intestines.
Prevention and treatment: In order to prevent these three endoparasites, the dog should be wormed frequently. The bitch should be wormed before mating and wormed again 1 month after whelping, along with the puppies. Then they should be wormed again every 2 months and 6 months. In each worming of the dog, the dog should be wormed three days in a row.
