I am seeking to keep this pup from our litter and am seeking opinions...He is 15 weeks old, approaching 4 months... His tail is wagging, but it is perfect! |

I understand that the breed is to be longer, and Turbo's length of body was not of concern - however, at this time, his overall balance is off (in my opinion). Likely age is the culprit and the growth spurts of teenage males. Octance's photo gave a more balanced impression at this time, again just my opinion. Of late many of the trd seen in photos seem more short backed and more square than I prefer. In contrast, I strongly prefer the elegant type as opposed to some of the cobbier styles. You can not set breed type in one or even two generations, but you can make significant improvements generation to generation. For example, in order to improve rear assemblies or top lines you might need to go shorter backed then breed back in length when proper qualities are consistant. For fronts and necks to improve you may have to make other considerations and then breed back more to type. You just need to know where you want to go, how to get there and then add in some pure luck. Very few quality dogs are the result of accidental or "because I have a male and female" type breedings. I believe James has a plan and a type set in his head and is moving toward that goal. Few, if any, perfect dogs are out there, but the picture of what the breeder thinks the of the perfect dog is always in his mind and that is what his eye looks for in the past, present and future. Thanks for the comments K..
I am wiaitng until 6 months to show him again... I am having troubles seeing the lack of balance as of now...but this is why i am showing him as i recognize i may have some blinders on at the moment.
I see obvious things you can not see in these fotos that I am slightly concerned with, or for lack of better terms, prejudiced to..
1 being he is a little too 'wet looking" at the moment, but his ears are just about finished and are taped, so I will wait to see more after they stand and he goes through some more growth..... he also has a little too much loose skin in his neck,, which I am uncertain will change for the better..I hope it does... and lastly, his overall topline, although not a major concern as I know this will develop until at least 15 months old.. so I need to wait this one out..
Its possible I may have let my best pup go, but I don't think so..His name was Diesel, a black male and he bounced form first to second pick a few times.. it was difficult... but It had to be done as I had actually placed Octane to the home, but he wasn't working out with their other dogs...so he had to come back and I gave them their pick excluding Turbo..
I will need to visit him in a month or so and check him out..If I see I screwed up, I will ask them to not neuter and work with me in the future, of course if they accept...he is scheduled for neutering around 6 months old.. |

Suzanne, I plan to take some soon and will post them. Hes coming out nicely, but with age, I find more I dont like. His color is turning as well. it may just be a coat change, but more black, which actually looks cool as hell along his ridge.. but he doesnt seem to have the deep rich red color anymore.. It has turned more rust in color.. but his paws intersting enough, as well his forearms, have that deep red, so we shall see. |

We should have talked 3 weeks ago before a down on his luck german shepherd pup connived his way into the household......... Someday a new TRD will enter the picture but the senior citizens will need have gone on first.....we are up to 4.5 (the old maltese who was only supposed to live 6 months-that was 2 years ago-is smaller than the cat so can't count as a full dog!) and our subdivison reg's only allow 3...........but we are not the only offenders so our fingers are crossed! |

Dear K, There are soo many dogs down on their luck! I was going to encourage you to take the "jump" to a TRD. But understand your problem. Could say the Maltese is a "new breed" of cat. :) LOL! My husband and I have been encouraged to buy into a Senior Condo situation, but most (if not all) do not allow a dog the size of Ginger. They would allow my husband's 23ft. boat but not my 40+ lb. dog. Take me take my dog!!!!! Jo-Ann and Ging

HI K, Both are doing very well. Octane now lives in Indiana and I am waitng to see some recent fotos of him. Turbo is doing well.he is a handful, but a sweet boy, defnitely ruff around the edges.. He is very big,a little too big.. he is pushing near 80 lbs. not quite yet, but I think he will be this much with some maturity.. definitely not ideal by any means. as for now, like anything else, there are things I like about him, but some things I really dont . I dont care for his topline and rear and am hoping to see some correction in the next couple of months.. But I think i am hoping for a miracle.. Too much skin in the neck. At first appearacne , he is beautiful and flashy but when you get into the nuts and bolts of it all, I can pick him apart.. They are now just near 10 months old, so I am giving him until about 1 year -15 months to see how he finishes off..if I dont like it, I will try to place him.. He is in complete health and if he balances out nicely, his size will be overlooked. If not, then i fear he has too much against him... right now he is still standing high in rear making his topine appear very soft, and his rear is looking too strait.. What can I say, one day he looks like the best dog in the world, the next he looks like a piece of shit.. that about sums it up.. |
