These two spent AK (7.62 x 39mm) casings were picked off the battlefield at a place called the 'Whale Feature' of the Sha-I-Kot Valley during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan. The one on the left is marked 711(Russia) and dated 1982, the other, on the right, the green one is marked 31 (PRC), and dated 1972. Interesting to see ammo from two different countries, suprising enough I was told that the majority of 7.62 x 39mm was of Russian manufacture and dated during the 'occupation days'. With the AK variants which I have observed on the TV, often Chi-Com Type 56's with the folding spike are seen along with the Russian 5.45 x 39mm AK-74s and the like. Casings courtesy of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. |
