On This Day in History!

Every so often a post will be made telling you about an historical event that happened on this day in history. There is a "member in charge" of entries on this board, but if you have something of historical significance that you'd like to share, please do.

Elvis died today 30 years ago,, I was still at the firm im at now! I can remember going to work and seeing some of the girls in our section weeping.I didnt help by singing "you aint nothing but a dead man "which brought cries of outrage Im sorry ..I was horrible in those days. I m a much nicer person now, honest

That's like singing "she ain't nothin' but a dead princess!" Those ladies must have wanted to string you up by your toes!

Course, on the other hand, Elvis had become a characature of himself by the time he died. And the three-ring circus they've made of his life to continue making money off him is shameful. Poor Elvis.

I was talking about Elvis last night with my son who informed me that his "mega talent" was lost on him. I said that as a young kid I had not liked his music at all but loved his movies which were a lot of fun. Then in the late 60's and on he changed his style and I liked him- In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, Always on My Mind.

But it did get me thinking of how Elvis and many others died at a time when they were at the peak of their career and thus became immortal. Others being James Dean, Buddy Holly, Marilyn Munroe. Had they lived they would not have such status because they would have got old and faded away instead of being preserved forever.

I always remember the date that Elvis died. It was my anniversary (first marriage) and we were at Niagara Falls when it came over the radio that Elvis had died. I didn't know it until last night that Lisa Marie is the one who found him. How very sad.

I think Elvis was at his best during the 50s when he was raw and brilliant. My fave Elvis song is "Dont" which alot of people havent heard of and its rarely heard on the radio .Yet its Elvis at his very best . I can do a mean version of it myself!

Its that dreadful date again 9/11 Where and what were you doing when you first heard about what happened?

I was at work This female operative Dreena Thompson was craning her ear to something happening on the radio. I was walking past her and slowed down to hear for myself what it was all about. What shocked me was her glee and she said "serves em right!" When I told her she was evil she said " "Those yanks have been supplying the IRA for years and weve been getting bombed " The next day after seeing the awful scenes on GMTV she had changed her tune.Its still unbelieveable

Today, September 30, 2007 is the 555th anniversary of the Gutenburg movable type and the beginning of the printing of the Gutenberg Bible.

It is also the the 25th anniversary of the invention of the emoticon! First done with symbols from the keyboard... :-)

It would have been John Lennon's 67th birthday today . . .
