WE'VE ALL LIVED THROUGH THE TRANSITIONS CREATED BY THE WORLD WIDE WEB---

I thought it would be interesting to talk about how the Internet has changed our lives.

So think about it, and tell us how the semi-conducter has altered your lives. This isn't just computers, but cell phones, and all manner of electronic devices that some/most of us have embraced.

So, where do I start? I know the obvious..we've all met here. But what does that mean? In the last 10 years I've changed dramatically because of becoming a 'Global Person'. Wikipedia defines a global person like this --"A global person is someone who is knowledgeable about the whole world, not just his or her little corner of it. To become more global, one needs to explore other cultures and their points of view. Travel and study help, but I believe openness to others is the single most important quality."

Personally that means that I've become so much more aware of the world in a personal sense. It means I care more, beyond the borders of my county, beyond the borders of America.

I know more..when ever I see something on tv that ignites a question in my mind I sit down here and Google it. Even that.."Googleing" has become a common verb.."I don't know, go Google it!"..

So how about YOU?

Interesting question. The techno explosion has affected most of us. I've held back getting to know all the innovations available, as I usually do. I'm one of those who waits for the kinks to be worked out before making a monetary commitment to new gadgets, which sometimes means I miss the boat altogether! lol While I enjoy the ease of "googling" something, I'm still apt to look at an encyclopedia, dictionary, or atlas first. I forget I can easily look up phone numbers and addresses online, so I thumb through telephone books.

But to be honest, I find computers and cell phones to be a double-edged sword. They create convenience, and a way to meet and communicate with new people, but they are intrusive and demanding! I have a cell phone for my convenience. Yet I leave it on, in case my kids want to call (free minutes), and get all manner of calls from people who couldn't find me at home and evidently just couldn't wait to tallk to me. Sometimes that's a blessing, oftentimes it's an annoyance. I love having a computer! I love the places I can go, the people I can talk to. But I'm constantly bombarded with invitations to join this or that online group (i.e. Facebook, Friends Reunited, etc.), or implored to send on an email because the world will come to an end at precisely 12:01 a.m. if I don't. Every store, every utility wants my email address, sometimes refusing service if I don't give it to them.

I miss old fashion letter writing, you remember the kind - with pens and paper. I miss words being spelled out, instead of "how r u?" But when I get frustrated and upset by the intrusiveness of the Internet, I think about all of you. Without a computer, we'd never had met, and my life would have been poorer.

HOW HAS THE INTERNET CHANGED MY LIFE?

Well, like everyone else on here I have friends worldwide!

'Yahoo' chatrooms were my first addiction . . and it certainly WAS an addiction, for me anyway.

Broadband didn't exist and, if I remember rightly, I only spent a couple of hours a day, more on the weekend because it was so expensive but less so at the weekend.

Like Candy, I'm an avid user of Google. Anything can spark a search - a bygone item that I had forgotten, the name of someone which prompts me to 'where are they now' - anything!

For me, shopping has become a whole lot easier, as has paying the bills.

It's sad to say but I very rarely use a dictionary, I have my favourite online one.

Every morning I NEED to do my online jigsaw and crossword. I like to think it keeps my brain active.

My PC has given me tools to expand on my creativity. I now know how to make birthday cards, write a family newsletter, trace my ancestry and learn how to use PSP software.

Nothing really annoys me about the internet, except when it fails to do what I want it to and then it's my fault anyway - it's the operator that's to blame not the tool.

Or when I have to turn my hand towards the technical side and then I get frustrated!

I have always found the internet fascinating and will always find it to be so, for as long as it exists - I would be lost without it!

Because without it I wouldn't have found all you lot . . . nor would I have found the contacts to enable me to have my beautiful dogs or my chuck . . . or the umpteen shrubs, plants flowers I have in my garden . . . the list is endless!

I also pay my bills online..I love being able to do it because I am a procrastinator...GASP, you say!!..You never guessed it right? So I'll be drifting off to sleep when suddenly I'll remember my gas or electric bill..I'll throw on my bathrobe..come out and fire up my PC and keep from having the power turned off..

I think what it really comes down to is more power in our hands. I've a friend living in China who I've been chatting with for 8 years. Sometimes she puts on her webcam..from CHINA..!! I never get tired of that miracle.
