Today's spotlight is on .... CANDY!

aka: biddybuddy; USAmeetsUK

Occcupation: Cook

Family:  I am currently single, and I have three daughters. Traci is 35, Joy is 32 (neither of them can believe that!) and Amanda (my baby) is 20.

Characteristic that describes you best: computer geek

Interests/hobbies: I've spent a LOT of time on geneology, and have whole piles of notebooks and photographs of ancestors, and met people I'm related to. It's more like a treasure hunt when I finally find someone that I've been looking for a long time. Some of the best times I've had have been wandering cold, wet cemeteries, looking for old dead people.

I've always had at least one horse, up until now. Hopefully in a couple of years I'll be able to get one again, even if I don't ride it.

There's grandkids of course. Katie is the oldest of all the grandkids in my extended family. She's almost 13, going on 21. Very smart, of course, and beautiful. Then comes Jenna, who is only 4 months younger than Katie.  Jenna pretty much rules the world. She's pretty bossy, and is usually right. Chad is the only boy, and he's 11. A big burly husky kid, and likes to play with his grandpa's draft horses. Sara is 10, a dog lover and the tender-heart in the family. She caught a turtle for me, cuz she knew Grandma needed someone to take care of. And last of all is Krissy. She's 9, a redhead, and the baby, and everybody kinda pampers her, of course. How in the world do you describe how you feel about your grandkids!

Places you've been to: England twice, Scotland, Minnesota, Florida, Canada and places in between.

Favorite Place: Ripley Beach on Lake Erie  It's a place where Robyn and I grew up, and a place where I go to get grounded when things get crazy. I spent a lot of time there this past summer.

Proudest Accomplishment (NOT including your children): After my kids were older and I was working, I went to college and got my degree. It was hard but having my kids that proud of me made it worthwhile.

Future Goal:  I want to travel more. I still plan to see most of Scotland(especially Inverness), visit all of you folks and possibly go to China, Egypt and other parts of Africa, maybe Ireland and Wales.  My most current future goal is to come back to England and hike Hadrians Wall with my daugher and friends....are you all ready for that??

Today's Spotlight is on ... Sue

aka: SueMac, Susie, Snoozey, and Oi You!

Occupation:  I am Learning Needs Advisor in a largish community College. This means that I identify students with disabilities and/or learning difficulties and then ascertain what they need to ensure that both their learning and environmental needs are met. I also read and scribe for such identified persons when they take exams and assist in putting together portfolios. This is a very demanding role and so far this academic year I have files on over 200 students.

Family:  I have 3 grown sons from my first marriage which ended in divorce 6 years ago. They are Chris, 27; Dan, 25; and Andrew, 23. The youngest two still live with me but my eldest son lives with his partner and their 2 year old son just about a mile from me.  So I have one grandchild but that will become two in a few weeks and I will get my longed for little girl! My second husband left me about two and a half months ago. A terrible blow to me... but we are still on fairly friendly terms - so if anybody knows any magic spell or special prayers that are guaranteed to work - please send them my way.

Characteristic that describes you best:  I am a typical Tauean - born smack in the middle of that star sign. I am stubborn and fiercely loyal to those I care about. I can also suddenly be provoked to anger but it quickly subsides. I have a memory like a steel trap which is both a blessing and a curse.

Interests/hobbies:  I read and write a lot for the BA Literature which I am currently studying towards. I like to write poetry and have sometimes written short stories but never submit anything. I love to travel but over the last few months that has fallen by the wayside. Been to the USA countless times as that is where my husband is from. I also love music and art ... I guess I am a creative person with an over-active imagination.

Favourite Place:   Can I really choose a single favourite place? Nope, I will name a few off the top of my head - Madeira, Paris, Mackinaw Island, Taquamenon Falls, New York City, Chicago, and London.

Proudest Accomplishment:   I used to sing professionally until I married my first husband. I still loved to sing but he did not think it an appropriate career for me. Later in my mid forties the telecoms company where I worked decided to form a band to do a couple of performances and raise money for charity. I auditioned and got the lead female vocals. No one really knew about me singing and they were surprised at the first concert. That night people were coming up to me and expressing their surprise and telling me to get back into it professionally. The next day I had a stream of emails from people. It was just wonderful. We did one further concert and then that was it but I felt very, very proud of myself.

Future Goal:  Peace and happiness for myself and those I care about. I also want to rediscover the young girl inside me - she kind of lost her way lately.

Today's Spotlight is on ... Donno

aka:   Stephen Donnison, Donno

Occupation:  I work at a poultry processing plant. Been there since I was 16. I work for the training department, which means any trainees arrive, or migrant workers, I will sort them out. I make sure they can speak English and keep my eye on them. I do enjoy it, even though the work can be hard and demanding. The firm was taken over by the Yanks two years ago which saved us from going under. They've invested heavily and we are building a £40 million plant.

Family:  Married to Hazel since 1990. I've now got three step-daughters, Nikki, Susan, and Pauline, all in their 30s and all married. Nikki has two girls, Susan has two girls, Pauline has a boy and a girl - all sweethearts. The oldest is 15 and the youngest is 3.

Characteristic that describes you best:  Cheerful, placid, takes a lot to upset me, but when I do, watch out! but it's rare. Damn cute, too soft at times, can be too weak at certain things, can be generous.

Interests/hobbies:  Love my garden and my ponds. History fascinates me. Love to explore old battelfields in France and Flanders, to be where the British army fought and died. Researching my family tree. I'm a bookworm and will curl up with a book at any time, mainly non fiction. I'm a movie buff and enjoy the old films from the 1930s to the modern movies.

Places you've been to:  Cape Town, Sydney, Singapore, KL.  Crete, Ypres, the Somme, Dublin, Llandudno, Scilly Isles, Tossa, Barcelona

Favorite place:  Lincoln, Skeggie, Table Mountain, Nobby's beach, NWS, Highlands, my back garden in summer with a BBQ.

Proudest accomplishment:  I was dead chuffed when I passed my driving test the first time. I did whoop! Proud to have passed my course-work at Training.

Future Goal:  To continue my progress at work. To win the Lotto and travel everywhere! To visit the U.S. for the first time.

Today's Spotlight is on .... Mavis

aka:  ravymavy, lady ravy

Occupation:  sewing machinest (overlocker) retired. Now look after my children (my grandkids) while my daughters go out to work.

Family:  I have 8 children, 6 girls, and 2 boys, all grown up now with their own families. (26 grandkids plus 7 step grandkids) Costs me a fortune at Christmas but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Characteristic that describes you best:  Surprisingly shy until I get to know people. Once in the company of my friends I am a party animal! lol

Interests/hobbies:  sewing, reading, walking (though I can't do much walking now-a-days), cross word puzzles, and of course my pc.

Places you've been:  Brussels, Scotland, Corfu (Greece), Benidorm (3 times), Turkey (twice), Cyprus, Saloo (Spain), America

Favorite Place:  My favorite place... not sure I really have one, unless you count Benidorm when Mike followed me out there and we had the best 11 days of my life! He's such a romantic at times.

Proudest Accomplishment:  It was when I was 40 summit years, I joined an outdoor pursuits groups. We were being taught to be leaders in absailing, canoeing, hill walking, gorge walking, mountain climbing, and social events. I cannot swim, and was afraid of heights, and very shy. I completed my course with a pass (it was for 10 months)! We had to go to Brussels as part of the course, so it was also my first time flying.

Future Goal: To do as much travelling as possible. Win the lottery, and live the rest of my life in a warmer country.

Todays Spotlight is on ... Jean

aka: Jeanie,  1happyhiker

Occupation:  I have 2 at the moment: Home Carer; working with the elderly giving the help & support they need to stay in their own home rather than residential care. Bus Driver;  I do a school run mainly but sometimes help out with service runs or private hire if I have time.  The kids I drive are aged from about 5 - 9 yrs and they drive me nuts they squabble so much. Trouble is I'm no good at giving them a row.  I just have to look at their wee faces and I can't keep mine straight!!

Family:  Been with Alex for 19 yrs now, married for 14......that's scary it's gone so fast. No kids but I have 4 sisters who all have so we are a big family and I love it when we all get together.

Characteristic that describes you best: Determination, my star sign is Capricorn...I am a stubborn old goat!!

Interests/hobbies: My big passion these days is hill-walking.  There's nothing I like better than a Sunday spent tramping the hills with my friends.

Reading also when I get time ....love Wilbur Smith novels.

Places you've been to: Paris, various Spanish resorts, Turkey, Romania, Greek Islands, Morocco, Cairo, Jerusalem, The Gambia, Florida, Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada & various UK places.

Favorite place:  I have 2;  Grand Canyon because it is just so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. The island of Skye for much the same reason and because it was always our special place in the early years of marriage.  We used to hide out there in the peace and quiet when certain outside influences got to us.

Proudest accomplishment:  Sorry folks...I know I'm a Grand Canyon bore but it has to be last summer when I hiked from the north to the south rim.  It was a fantastic experience I'll never forget and made me feel really proud of myself.

Future Goal:  I'm quite happy with my life really but there's nothing a good lottery win couldn't improve.  I would love to travel more before I pop off.  Places high on a long list are Australia, N.Z., South America....I could go on and on!!

aka: BJ, Nobby, Tea-One, Clarkey, Walks With Dog.

Occcupation: Prison Officer, Full time Union Official.

Family: Married to Bev for 29 years ( We've been going out since we were 16...that's 38 years!) Girls Kim, 24, Kelly, 21. Boys Aidan, 18 and Owen, 15. Mom and Dad are still the Heads of the family. I have two sisters and a brother.

I've described on pages in this Group how Mom and Dad met during the War years. I have the utmost respect for my Parents and the utmost love and affection. They started out with little money and raised a family that I am proud to be part of. My older sister Bernadette is a Deputy Head Teacher on Tyneside. My younger sister Irene has many health problems and lives with my Parents. My brother Paul is the Station Officer incharge of plant protection for Land Rover.

Answering the 'phone a few weeks back, I was shocked when a friend of Bev's suggested that I would be pleased when the children had all left home. I said that I quite liked my kids, I enjoyed their company and humour. Kim the eldest is a treasure. Bright and beautiful with not a trace of attitude. Kelly Breath-takingly beautiful and loving with a fierce protective nature. Aidan, rather like myself, relaxed and confident, flirtatious and an ability to do something stupid and amuse people. Owen, amusing in the extreme , charming, confident and intelligent. They all share a sense of loyalty to each other and ... an ability to fight with each other. It's never dull in this house.

Word that describes you best: Stupid. Despite my position as father and provider...Despite my quite serious occupation...Despite my quite serious position on the Union, I have an alarming tendency to be the person that outrages common decency, the person who brings down the tone of proceedings. The person to create havoc where there was peace. The person to create laughter where there was quiet. Generally at my own expense. I'm not a naturally amusing person. I'm no comedian. I do have an unerring ability to do the wrong thing at the right time. How the hell I've gotten away with some of the stupid stunts I've pulled I'll never know.

Interests/hobbies: Association Football, the Junior and Youth version. I played for years and had a lot of fun and little success. When the boys came along I helped by training and coaching and managing. With the aid of the boys I had even more fun and much more success. I love Cricket, Rugby and watching it at any level.

I love my dog. He listens while we walk and take a dose of exercise that I need and he wants. I meet people and pass the time of day with them. I watch the countryside change from Summer to Autumn, to Winter to Spring. I get wet, I get hot. I get annoyed sometimes when I feel too tired or too wrapped up in my thoughts to spare the time.

I like going out on my own to a pub I've never been to before. I take my darts and play with SHARKS for beer or money. I like Family gatherings. I drink too much and make a fool of myself.

I have a lifelong love affair with airplanes and guns. When I win the Lottery I shall indulge myself with a purchase or two. I love providing opportunities for kids...opportunities to stretch themselves, scare themselves, to achieve.

Places you've been to: Wales, Scotland, France, Germany. Prisons up and down the country. Not many people get to say that. It's really quite interesting. I've been in tight spots with some nasty people to deal with, good people behind me. I've been in the company of people I'd die for, people I admire and people I despise. I've been in trouble ... right up to my neck. I've been in the Delivery Room six times. I have four children. I've been high, I've been low. I've been to WEMBLEY, I've been to AMSTERDAM.

Favourite Place: In front of people. Leading. I love my seat in Church, with members of the family or more frequently, on my own. I enjoy that hour of contemplation, just once a week. The Church is full of people of all ages and backgrounds. They are good people. The Common, Penn Common. The Acorn after work. Broad Street. Mom and Dad's house. The Delivery Room.

Proudest Accomplishment (NOT including your children): Doing my job I guess. As a Prison Officer or as a Union Leader. Neither comes easy, I work hard at both. Not everyone's cup of tea...either job. I take pride in doing something in the interest of others. I make mistakes, sometimes I get it right. I have a wonderful team of strong, experienced and willing helpers. I'm proud to be a part of the team.

Future Goal: To be succesful at my work and as a Husband and Father. On a selfish note, I want to win that Lottery...I want my Private Pilot's License. I want to own ACRES of land. I want to have a few friends with me to shoot Clay Pigeons out of the sky. I want those friends to enjoy what I enjoy. I want a private box at Walsall FC. I want my friend Aidy to bring his family there after the game. ( he would not watch the game from anywhere but the Terraces ). I want a house in London, Hyde Park. Close to the Theaters and restaurants. I want to share the place with friends.

Today's spotlight is on .... Robyn

aka: Mnmischief, Rob (although only my family and Candy call me that and I don't really care for it)

Occcupation: Daycare provider

Family:  Married for the second time to Bob (my own personal palindrome).  He is my knight in shining armor, my biggest admirer, and he spoils me rotten. And I love every minute of it! lol  We have our problems like most couples, but overall, I think I'll renew his contract when it comes due in November.  I also have a son, Matt, 26; a daughter, Jessica, 21, both by my first marriage. And of course a precious granddaughter, Abby, who is 3 going on 13. I am fully convinced I should have been the mother of four, but fate didn't work out that way. I was married for 9 years, 1 month, and 14 days before I got pregnant for the first time (it says so on the conception announcements we sent out! ), much to the consternation of relatives who swore I was pregnant when I got married at 19!  So to them I say.... ppppttttttthhh!   It took another 4 years to conceive the second child. They are a joy to me! And while they are two totally different people, they offer the most wonderful qualities a mother could ask.

Characteristic that describes you best:  Strident? Does that make me a typical American????   Actually I think the characteristic that describes me best is vivacious! Have you ever looked at people and thought, if they were an animal they would be a .... fill in the blank.  If I were an animal I would be a chickadee (do they have chickadees in England?) ~ always flitting from place to place, letting my presence be known by the noise I'm making! lol

Interests/hobbies: I love bird watching and I keep track of which birds I've seen and where. I love reading, although I go in spurts. There will be months at a time where I don't read a thing, then I can't seem to put a book down. We go canoeing when we can. It's so relaxing and leisurely, and so unobtrusive to the animals around us. I love Vikings Football!

I don't have anything I would call a hobby. I'm one of those people who know a little about a lot of things, but not a lot about any one thing. Same with hobbies. I can sew, crochet, paint, cook, etc., just not well enough to really DO anything with it.

Places you've been to: I've lived in New York, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Minnesota. I've seen all five of the Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Ontario. I've been to Florida and Texas in the middle of summer; I've seen the buffalo roam and the antelope play in the Badlands of South Dakota, and seen the presidents heads in Mount Rushmore.   I've seen grizzly bears and mountain goats and the sun set in the Rocky Mountains of Montana; and I've seen the mountains and traffic jams of southern California. I've bartered for goods in a Mexican border town, and heard the thundering roar of Niagara Falls in Canada. And I'm about to make my first overseas trip to England.

Favorite Place: My favorite place has to be Ripley beach, just sitting on the rocks watching the waves roll in....

Proudest Accomplishment (NOT including your children): I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of, but when it comes to the final accounting I hope the good outweighs the bad. There are some things I've done in my life of which I'm very proud, but there are two that stand out in my mind. When I was 24 (and my husband was 37) we got a call that his uncle had passed away and left three teenage boys orphaned, ages 11, 12 and 13. We were asked if we could take these boys and raise them until "other arrangements" could be made. We had no idea what we were getting into. We dealt with drug and alcohol problems, bedwetting, illiteracy, behavioral problems, and run-ins with the police. For three years we tried our best to give them a good home and instill decent values. In the end the two older boys ran away from home to live with a drug addicted older half-sister, and we adopted the youngest boy.

The other event was caring for my mother-in-law. Bob's mother suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for decades. When I met her she was wheel chair bound and couldn't walk at all. Bob's parents were wonderful people and I was as devastated as he when his father died in his sleep. By this time his mother was partially blind from cataracts, hard of hearing, and had a tracheotomy, and suffered from dementia. The only thing she could do for herself was lift a spoon to eat. We took her into our home, where we cared for her until she passed away a year and a half later.

Future Goal:  I want to write books. I have so many stories I want to tell, true stories about a woman I never met who kept tapes of her ramblings into insanity; the story of the journey to eternal rest my mother-in-law made; the story of my father and his life growing up with a cruel step-mother and life on a dairy farm...  They sound like downers, don't they!  To me they are stories of life and hope, the struggle to make the most of this life and a fervent hope that the next one is better.

Today's spotlight is on .... Rick

aka: unstablemonster

Occupation: I am retired after working as a professional land surveyor for about 35 years.

Family: My wife Linda and I have been married for more than 29 years. We have two children: Adam who is 20 and Debbie who is 16. Both of them are still here at home.

Characteristic that describes you best: Patience or tenacity or perseverance or whatever you might want to call it. My family would probably describe it as being a pain in the ass, but that is only what it may look like from their point of view. When I start something, or decide that something has to be done I eventually get it done. There may be lapses in my effort but I always come back to it until it’s finished. I tend to expect the same of others.

Interests/hobbies: There are many of these. My greatest interest is probably in reading and writing, but a very close second to these is woodworking. I am currently remodeling our kitchen and will be making everything, cabinets and all, myself. It will be a long slow process but it’s the cheapest and most satisfying way to do it. At the present time I am working on a hutch for that kitchen. I also enjoy gardening and yard work, walking, camping, baking (breads), movies, American history and a whole lot more.

Places you've been to: Within the United States I’ve been to about 30 of the states. Outside of this country I’ve made short trips to Canada and Mexico as well as having spent a year in Vietnam.

Favorite Place: This is a tough one. I very much enjoy being at home and working on the things I love to do, but I am a nomad at heart. The perfect life would include constant roaming in nothing faster than a car. Because of this I’ve been to many delightful and interesting places within this country and picking one as my favorite would be impossible.

Proudest Accomplishment (NOT including your children): I suppose this would have to be getting some of my writing published, especially my first published story because that was in Boys?Life, the national magazine of the Boy Scouts of America. I am especially proud of this because I’ve never had any formal training in writing. In college I was an engineering major and colleges, at least Penn State where I went, could care less if engineering types can read or write. I taught myself in order to show my kids that they, or anyone else, can do whatever they would like if they are just willing to work at it.

Future Goal: I don’t know. I guess I’d like to be able to write some more and maybe someday live in a free country like the United States used to be.

Today's spotlight is on .... Jen!

aka: AttractedTheliluni / theliluni / uni

Occcupation: Mother /housewife

Family:  I am in a long term relationship with Alan, my very own Prince Charming. I would be lost without him, he is my rock. I have 3 adorable (if not always good) children. Matthew is 14, charming at times but typical teenager. Haydn is 12, a spirited lovable rogue, who is forever hugging everyone. And Kaylee, 10 going on 60. Sometimes I swear she thinks she is the mom.

Characteristic that describes you best: Well, Alan calls me his S.L.R.H and that stands for Stubborn Little Red Head. As anyone who has met me knows, I am small, red headed and stubborn at times! lol I believe in fighting for what you want (no not physically) but sometimes you just have to keep pushing to make yourself heard and get where you want, as well as what you want.

Interests/hobbies: Sewing, puzzles, cross stitch, computers, cooking, and although I am taking time off at moment, ACF (Army Cadet Force).

Places you've been to: I've not really been many places outside the UK, but I have been to France and Cyprus, and a fair few places in the UK, although my geography is really bad, so I have no idea where they are half the time. LOL

Favorite Place: At home with Alan and the kids. Yeah I know, it sounds corny, but I love nothing better than spending the day at home with the kids, running around laughing and playing, 'specially on a sunny day when we have water fights, then cooking a meal with Alan, then all sitting down to eat, then just cuddling up watching a dvd with Alan.

Proudest Accomplishment(NOT including your children): The day I had my Pass out parade and made sergeant, the kids were there watching, smiling and then hearing them tell me how proud they were of me.

Future Goal: There are so many. I want to go travelling to see the world, write a book ( who cares if it gets published lol), start my own business, watch my kids grow up. Make people smile more.

Characteristic that describes you best:  True, loyal, hard working, compassionate, and more than a little goofy.

Interests/hobbies:   My service to my creator takes precidence over all, riding our horses, long walks, anything outside

Today's spotlight is on ....Carol

aka: Caz ~ Kaz ~ Ca ~ Cag

Occcupation:  I think I've the best job of all ... a full time housewife.

Family:  My other half is Mick. We've been maried over 32 years and have a daughter, Adele. She is 23 and recently gained a BA degree. Included in the family is Betsy, the hen; and Merlin and Molly, Siberian Huskies.

Characteristic that describes you best:  I am a non-religious, shy, private person who is meticulous, fastidious, pedantic (Virgo), witty and intelligent with a laid back attitude. Having a long fuse, hardly anything ruffles my feathers. (Have I been around my hen too long?) However, when pushed, I will attack, venomously. What's the saying - "Even a worm will turn." Well, that's me! Mostly, when I'm backed into a corner or contradicted, especially when I know I'm right! Vehemently protective around my family and people I care about. I have no time for fools, they annoy me immensely.

Interests/hobbies:  I enjoy anything Art n Crafty which includes Calligraphy, Needlework, Knitting and Crochet. My interest in Genealogy started when I was given a book celebrating a two hundred year jubilee of Engineering from a distant part of the family. The book concealed a great deal of info which led me to the north of England, armed with camera and notebooks, traipsing throught graveyards and sifting through parish registers, for more info. But beware, if you decide you want to travel down this path, IT IS ADDICTIVE! LOL!

My other interests/hobbies include Cooking, Listening to all types of music, except Jazz; Story Writing; everything PC & Internet related; Gardening and Nature and of course my hen and huskies.

I love nature and have been a recorder for the UK Phenology Network* for a few years now. It basically means I keep my ears and eyes open for changes in nature's calendar and record them online. In return I am kept up to date with the latest phenological and climate change findings.

* Phenology - The scientific study of periodic biological phenomena, such as flowering, breeding, and migration, in relation to climatic conditions.

Places you've been to: England & Wales (both too numerous to mention) ~ Scilly Isles ~ Scotland ~ Ireland (toured all over) & Dublin x 3 ~ Vienna, Austria x 3 ~ Brittany, France ~ Germany ~ Belgium ~ Ibiza, Balearic Islands ~ Tenerife, Canary Islands ~ Monastir, Tunisia ~ Costa Dorado & Almeria, Spain.

Favorite Place: The Stadtpark in Vienna; and sitting in my pergola, at any time of year, surveying my garden.

Proudest Accomplishment (NOT including your children): Passing my driving test, having my ears pierced at 40 and my Phenological interests.

Future Goal: To visit Russia and to write a best seller.
