Should bad parents be jailed?

Georgia Mother and Daughter Charged in Teacher Attack

ATLANTA  ?nbsp; Atlanta police have arrested a high school student and her mother in the beating of the girl's teacher.

Forty-four-year-old Georgia Thornton and her daughter, 17-year-old Sequita Thornton, have been charged with attacking Felecia Williams at Southside High School on February 28th.

According to a police report, the mother was charged with battery on a school teacher, disrupting public schools, criminal trespass and theft by taking in connection with the attack. Sequita was charged with battery on a teacher and disrupting public schools.

Atlanta public Schools spokesman Joe Manguno says Atlanta school officials have also permanently expelled the girl and ordered her to pay $500 toward the teacher's medical expenses.

Williams said Tuesday she had met with Thornton previously to discuss Sequita's grades and sporadic attendance.

On the day of the incident, Williams says the pair walked into her classroom during class and began arguing about a book. The teacher says she asked them to leave, but the mother pushed past her and grabbed a book off her desk.

According to a police report, when Williams tried to get the book back, the mother pulled the teacher's hair and threw her to the ground. Then the mother and daughter stomped on the teacher.

{ The thing that amazes me most about this is what a horrible Mother this woman must be. Did she ever stop to ask herself what kind of message this would be sending to her child? Whatever happened between the child and her teacher couldn't be near as bad as what this girls Mother did. Teaching your child to act like a bully and a thug is as bad as teaching them to be a racist or a Nazi.

I would like to see both these women punished for what they did but if I could I would add on six months in jail for the Mother for being such a bad parent. Enough is enough! I think it's time to start taking action in the most egregious cases of bad parenting.

What do you think?}

Some will suggest that it's the lack of physical discipline used on children that's the cause of the problem. Sparing the rod and spoiling the child.  I must admit I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place on this as I don't believe in using violence of any kind against children. My sister and I were never hit as children by our parents or anyone else but we were watched like hawks and they were very involved in our day to day activities. Just a look of disappointment in my Dad's eyes would cause me to run weeping to my room.

I see many examples of crappy parenting all the time in malls, shopping markets, etc, and I don't know what the answer is. There are just too many parents who don't seem to care what their kids are doing or how they will turn out. It's really disturbing.

Yes, it's disturbing and I think they should go to jail and get very, very intensive counseling on how to be a good parent.  A program where they have to attend sessions on being a good parent every day while incarcerated and 3 times a week after they are released. There should be a monitor who works in conjuction with the parole officer that they have to make contact with on the days they are not attending a session.

Plus, their parole should be conditional based on whether the child gets into any further trouble or not

Blessed be.

This is a simple case of assault. I do not see it as a threshold case that allows government to assume ownership of children. Don't jump the gun, that's coming soon enough.

I don't see it as a "simple case of assault", Westwind40. Thorton went to the classroom; she didn't go to the pricipal's or counselor's office, have the teacher called in, and address the teacher there. Her actions show her intention to cause a big problem by bullying the teacher.

Blessed be
