Can anyone remember the name of the first Quantock chef ? he was assisted by his first wife ( Blonde with a 'gammy ' leg ) They were a nice couple and he made a superb fish pie,l remember quite a high dtandard of food then.Peaster found some war time powdered eggs,in tins in a cellar and asked the chef to use them..l can't remember the reaction to that one!.The chef was a member of the magic circle and l once worked as his assistant complete with Eastern costume at a performance in one of the pubs at Nether Stowey..ah a taste of showbiz ! Will
ps A good Peaster scam occured in the 60's when all schools were supplied with state free milk..what did Peaster do ? well he sold it back to us boys in the form of milky coffee !. |

PS It was powered milk not eggs. Peaster made us drink it at breakfast, even he couldn't drink it and it was all destroyed. At Cotham, Harmer Smith used to steal the "Free Milk" but Patrick Cook got his revenge. Laurie |

I think Will was talking about a 'Cooker' not a 'Hooker' Really 5 quid - what would that be in today’s money ....? 1985-1990 we had 'Volly' a rather cranky, and not so good looking German Cook. She got quite riled if you barging into her kitchen and shouting "More Chips ...". She also took a dim view of pupils 'Hair-flick' impersonations .... she may have even had a glass eye ???? |

Mike i remember 'Volly' as you called her.She seemed as those she had escaped hanging after the second world war. I think she should have been the second in command with the Nazi's.She had a mouth like most germans that i know they just tell you straight and don't mix there words . Cheers Graeme(nelly) |

Hi Mike, I think £5 in todays money works out to £50. I think I met your German cook when I visited the school with my wife. Gerry asked her if we could have a meal there but this German Battleaxe refused us a meal. Does this sound like the cook you are talking about ? Laurie |

Hi All, I've just been visiting Gerry Warriner, he has just come out of hospital after suffering heart problems. A weird thing happened while he was there. He kept insisting to the staff that a "German Cook" was in a bed down the corridor. The staff said he was making it all up and that he was really going nutty. Gerry's home help came to visit him and he kept insisting this "German Cook" was down the corridor. The home help got fed up of Gerry saying this, so she took him down the corridor and from a bed a lady called out to Gerry and asked him if he remembered her as the cook from Quantock ! He was right all the time. Sadly, she has just had her leg amputated. So all the lads that new her, please say a prayer for her. Laurie |

Hello All Not sure we can call someone who cooked at Quantock a chef, hell not even sure sure we can call them cooks. It would take a magician to turn the ingredients into food so perhaps they should have stuck with the second 'cook' (maybe the first if i were able to save a fiver) Regards Gareth Small |

I remember well the first chef at Quantock, his wife was his assistant,Cannot recall his name but he was a member of the magic circle !!! as l was interested in 'showbiz'he recruited me as his Magician's Assistant. Dressed in a flowing Arabian costume l assisted him at a performance in a pub room in Nether Stowey .. he was an excellent magician and not a quite a good cook l loved his fish pie. Will

Hi Will, Pity I missed your show and the fish pie. So it did take a magician to turn the slops into food !! Have you heard from Patrick Cook ? Peter Mason tells me you visited him. I'm still trying to get him to visit Quantock but he is still too scared. Pity you can't visit the old place. Laurie |

By the early 70's we had Mrs Smith and her delightful daughter Anne. Both were rather adventurous, but not in the kitchen? Regards, Nick. |
