To the class of 1970 I wish you all well this Holiday and Christmas,it has been almost 40 years since I attended Quantock,-time,space,brings it to when I was 17 years old-the memories are still vivid-being prefect-ringing the bell for class-going outside to take showers in the winter-and the outings to Bridgewater.
All the best.

I remember the bell...the rope came down along the column of the spiral staircase to top corridor....none of that new fangled hi-tech stuff in my day!

I was surprised to see the hole was still there, just by the spiral stair case ... did a pupil have to yank on the chain/rope to ring the bell to wake all the pupils ... was there a "bell-ringing duty"!!

Surely the rope/chain was not linked to main bell in the clock tower - I guess there must have been a second bell else where ?

I was emailed the following - it doesn't appear to be top secret so I repeat it here:
Hello Mike:

Maybe I can shed some light here.

The bell was the same one as in the tower.  The rope descended all the way down the spiral staircase to the bottom floor.

It had to be yanked EVERY HOUR to mark the end of the class period.

The person on duty most times was Bruce Ward, but when he was not available, any prefect or even Gerry himself would do the honours.  Sometimes the prefects would dish out rope duty as punishment.

Cheers

Mabz

Hi Mike,
Sorry I'm getting my TV charaters mixed up.
Bruce Wayne is Batman
Burt Ward played Robin in the 60's TV series.
So Bruce Ward played the Quantock bell ringer.
I got the names mixed up
