People,

This article is from today's (14.06.2000) Daily Telegraph, which can be seen online at www.telegraph.co.uk

<<beg.

A FORMER boarding school in a quiet village could become "a centre of excellence" for asylum seekers and a model for similar schemes, a public inquiry was told yesterday.<!--zonk endpullout -->

Quantock Lodge in Over Stowey, near Bridgwater, Somerset, would offer facilities for sport and education and the peace to recover from traumatic experiences. Martin Blakebrough, director of Kaleidoscope, the charity which is seeking permission to use the school as a hostel, said he believed that local people would come to accept the refugees.

Kaleidoscope is appealing against the decision by Sedgmoor council to reject its plans to place 74 asylum seekers, mostly young men, in the village, which has a population of 314. Mr Blakebrough, a Baptist minister, was interrupted by gasps and laughter from opponents in the public gallery as he gave evidence.

He said: "The centre would be the first of its kind to offer this level of facility. Our learning centre will provide essential education to help residents and enable them to be occupied creatively. With the right staff and support I have no doubt we will provide a centre of excellence which will become a model of good practice.

"The aim is to create a caring environment where people can access support and look at the issues of trauma in a tranquil environment. I believe it is a place where people will find acceptance. I believe the local community is very caring."

Opponents of the hostel are due to give evidence today.

Good spot, did they have anything in the paper edition..? ie Any photos....? I noticed that you have 12 contributions to the e-Telegraph, have you submitted anything with regard to your opinions from the prospective of an ex-Quantock school pupil to the e-Telegraph site - nb On one of the BBC panorama pages, some X-Quantock person was mentioned, listing his opinions on the matter of the school in its new role!

I did indeed submit an article, but unfortunately it was not published. Like all of the other articles I have written in, it was very harshly worded and rather right-wing (no surprise there, methinks). Here is a verbatim of my 'I am very pissed off at this' analysis:

SIR -

Having found out not so long ago about the decision to use Quantock Lodge in Over Stowey as a holding centre for asylum seekers, I am appalled at the fact that some people are now wanting to promote it as some sort of 'centre of excellence'.

I feel that as a former pupil of the the Quantock School, I have been ripped off twice over, first by the fact that facilities that mine and other
pupils' parents actually paid for are being used by people who have
contributed nothing, and secondly by the fact that yet more taxpayer's money is being pumped into this and other nonsensical asylum seeker assistance schemes, money which could be better spent. Then of course there is the fact that the refugees are being foisted upon the small hamlets around Over Stowey, which is hardly the best course of action both for the villagers as well as the asylum seekers themselves.

The irony in all this is that if the Quantock School had been given a mere
fraction of the money that is no doubt going to be provided to the
Kaleidoscope if their scheme goes ahead, it may not have found itself having to close down in the way it did.

Yes, it would have been in the paper as well, but I couldn't get to a place to buy it - time constraints and all that - yes, yes, I know I could have gone a bit out of my way and pulled off the M3 into a service station, but there you go...

If am going to add the telegraph article onto the main site, and any others that I can find.

Cheers

Rick
